6:20 when I was teaching my little sister how to drive, I told her 'Good drivers sometimes miss their exits. Bad drivers never miss their exits.' I'm glad to see someone agreeing; if you're responsible, you'll go to the next exit, take the L, and have 5-10 more minutes on your trip. If you're a bad driver, you'll put others in danger to get where you want to.

22:39 Driving back from a lake in Colorado, I saw a car literally sideswipe a biker for lane splitting, almost took him down. Biker didn't want none of it and tried to get away. For the next minute the car tried killing the biker back and forth across 4 lanes at 80+mph, fish tailing as the biker tried faking him out at exits. By the time I got 911 on the phone they had sped off way faster than I could catch up (was towing a boat).

At 7:07, the truck to his right absolutely had to have seen him before he even got to the point of now being in his blind spot. Its one thing if the rider was already in the trucks blind spot, but the clip shows the truck speeding up to the righter's side a few seconds in. I wonder, where did the truck driver think the rider he just sped up to went? Its why in cases like those, i genuinely am disappointed at the drivers who cause these types of accidents. Fortunately in his case it worked out but many drivers out there will just commit to the turn and force the rider off the lane/crash. Ive saved myselft quite a few times from similar incidents, its not fun.

Exactly. I love dan, but that assessment he made there was way off imo. The truck literally just sped up to the rider, then all of a sudden acts like the lane is clear for him to merge, knowing full well he JUST sped up beside a rider who was in that lane to begin with. Its like how could the truck really do that and just forget that there was an entire motorcycle rider in that spot hes trying to merge into. The video clearly shows that the truck sped up to the rider, meaning he/she had to have seen them. That bothered me because its happened to me a bunch, where a driver would just force you out of your lane, which could potentially lead to a crash for no good reason.

Was planing on writing a comment like that. When you've just passed a vehicle there is next to no excuse to "not see" them. Unless the driver has no knowledge of object permanence and then shouldn't be driving since they're a 6 month old baby.

@@McPingvin Not necessarily true, it's important to remember that as attentive driver's, we're paying attention to all vehicles. If you ride a motorcycle especially, you're much more sympathetic to other riders. For bad drivers, they're exclusively looking for other vehicles so even if their ears and eyes say "motorcycle," their brain is filtering for cars.

When I was younger (in my early twenties in the late 1990s) I rode like a bit of a dick, which I admit now. There was one incident which really spooked me into being more defensive. I'd just left a local bike meet at the Waterman pub near Warwick (UK) and I was riding a series of twisties with blind bends and lots of junctions. I rode through it fine and was enjoying myself and thought nothing of it. A few days later I got a phone call from a mate saying that a biker who was literally just a couple of minutes behind me, he had went around a blind bend and straight into the back of a tractor with those spikes on them, and was killed. This really shook me up thinking that if I'd have left a couple of minutes later...that would have been me! After that I rode a lot safer, even if I wasn't the 'fastest guy' again, but I always think of that accident

At least here in Argentina passing other vehicles on the right side is illegal, except when the other vehicle is about to turn left or in a traffic jam. Lane splitting is kind of a gray zone, but it is implied that you can do so only to get to the front of traffic at a red light as there are stopping areas for motorcycles behind some pedestrian crossings at certain avenues (which are always blocked by drivers stopping on them, which is not much of a problem because riders will just stop on the crossing)

As a rider and Prius driver I often find myself applying the same principals. Riding a motorcycle has made me even more situationally aware. Hopefully driving a Prius helps offset the others.

Excellent instruction, all new riders take heed to this mans advice. Dan....more blind spot lessons for all those who dont know what a blind spot is, lane position etc. I must say, those newbie riders who drove straight into a herd of sheep need to approach a little more slowly, and let the dogs do their work first. I wasn't surprised, because very little surprises me now, but riders who don't know that animals of all shapes and sizes need to be treated with extreme caution. I remember the video I saw of a rabbit taking down an F1 rider.....!

7:10 That situation had nothing to do with the car’s blind spot. As you see in the video the car came flying up past the rider obviously seeing him and wanted to cut in front of him. The car 10000% knew exactly where the biker was hence why it didn’t completely cut him off. I would have thought with as much experience as you have, you would have noticed/mentioned that. Instead you’re talking about his blind spot for some reason which is obviously Incorrect. Keep up the great content and maybe take some time to catch the small details like in this instance. 🤙🏼

7:35 to be fair, as a motorcyclist myself i always check my blindspot extremely well, even when driving my car yet one time even i missed a motorcyclist who kept riding next to me in my blindspot at a merging lane. Didn't see him in my mirror, didn't see him with shouldercheck. Him honking prevented a collision. I felt so stupid but i really never saw him. It happens, even when you're paying attention and even when always looking out for motorcyclists. That's why you always avoid blind spots when riding.

Ive been driving on the same country road for just shy of 3 decades.. started back when a kid taking grandmas car down the road wasnt really a big deal, at least in that tiny town.. i still ride like a grandma when I havent driven the road in a while or if im on a new bike.. i have ridden the road a few times in the last few days and im still not going that fast because i know this time of year the leaves like to pile up in a few of the corners...

So thankful for this channel! I’m a father and have a love for motorcycles. I’ve never ridden one but I have a goal to get a bike in the next year. On the fence about a Indian scout bobber or a Harley Davidson soft tail or just any Harley really. But the Indians are a little more my price range. I’ve heard Indians are super powerful but I just wanna ride and come home safe to my babies. Thanks for making these educational videos brother. 🙏

23:27 It is not always a Prius. That is “Frequency Illusion”. Whether you are biased or simply choose to see a pattern does not make it true. *modern hatchbacks and SUVs keep sacrificing visibility and load capacity for a curved rear roof that I assume is for reducing wind resistance.

At 24:00 , if you’re lane splitting with your shadow extending 30’ in front of you, you’re effectively playing Russian Roulette with 6 rounds in the cylinder. Sunrise/sunset is the most dangerous for driving anything. ESPECIALLY MOTORCYCLES. On that last clip, where the rider comes up on an active accident scene, is why I have a fire extinguisher & trauma kit in the trunk of my Gear Up hack at all times.

I have driven many different cars all shapes and sizes. If your car mirrors are adjusted correctly your blind spot is almost non existent and if you combine this with glancing at your mirrors consistently like we should we will always be aware of whats behind. Highways are the easiest to work out what the blind spot is for any vehicle provided they are correctly adjusted. For example if you are in the left lane keep eye on mirror where the car is coming up and when it dissapears from the mirror, as soon as it dissapears from your mirror it should be in view from drivers window and peripheral vision will catch it. This is how you get a reference point of how blind the blindspot really is. Motorcycles are shorter than cars but if you're consistently looking at mirrors, you should be able to spot the rider long before they pass. Too many people think they have perfected driving when they pass when it reality they barely pass the basics. I beleive advanced driving courses should be goverment funded as many people will take advantage of this to become better drivers

21:03 - In the early '80s, there was a guy in a truck that was hitting cyclists on I-95 in Palm Beach Co. He killed at least two people. My brother was riding home from work when a truck accelerated down the on ramp and straight across the highway towards him. He saw him coming and applied full throttle, outrunning the truck. I think the murderer was finally caught.

7:25 get this EVERYDAY on a peddle bike. They were just behind you and pulled out to overtake. they must know you’re there. But apparently as soon as their passenger window passes you. You no longer exist. Nor does the rear half of their vehicle. And it is impossible for the rear of their car that does not exists to hit the vulnerable road user which also no longer exist… … …

Hello from Argentina! I been wondering... have you ever made a video about riding with a child? What's the best protection for them, etc. If there's a specific kind of bike, that's better for that end... By child I mean between 5 and 10 years old. Keep, going... love your videos!

Know it's not my video but I think many would agree with me when I say best to let your spouse or grandparents to watch them for the day. Children that age don't understand the severity of being a passenger. I'm not sure if there is gear that would accustom their size let alone mx gear, some I've found are dot rated but sizing is important. Don't want the gear to do more harm than what it's supposed to protect you from. Read an article on riding boots that split a heel due to the interior design of the boot which had sharp metal by the heel itself. Not a pretty situation. Ultimately I'd do the research and pick and choose times of day, like mid afternoon on a week day or before rush hour. I'm sure you already have places in mind. Also I understand wanting to bring a child out for freeing ride, it's awesome and it's really cool for them too, but have that conversation with them on what they need to be prepared for or run through scenarios for bad to worse. Pray for the best, prepare for the worse.
