It's actually a pretty nice strategy. There is not a word on the Tesla web site about this upgrade, because they obviously want you to consider the M3P. But after you purchased the M3LR, you showed that you were not willing to shell out $8k extra for the entire performance package, so how about going halfway to the M3P in pure acceleration for $2k? Some of those (us) that were not willing to pay the extra $8k for the M3P might very well pay $2k for the Acceleration Boost upgrade, and Tesla gets some extra cash.

@crainger I mean for efficiency all you gotta do is make sure the aftermarket wheels weigh the same or less than LR stock wheels. $8k for the performance is not bad at all actually because if you were to get an aftermarket big brake kit, aftermarket suspension, wheels n tires, and acceleration boost option it would cost nearly $8k and you lose factory warranty on those parts

I don’t know if a 100kwh battery is needed, but a 90kwh battery would be perfect. It wouldn’t be as much weight, while still adding ~100hp and torque. Also range would increase to 375 or so. Lastly acceleration times would be mid 2s and quarter miles in mid 10s which would be perfect. A 100kwh battery will get you 400+ miles of range and low 10s in the quarter mile, but it would add more weight which isn’t necessary or beneficial, cuz it might weight close to 4300 pounds, instead of 4100 or so with a 90kwh. Also a stiffer suspension, or air suspension is a must.

mskz06 True, but I highly doubt they would change the chemistry of batteries because the Model 3 uses the latest tech from Tesla. It would only be smart of them to just make the battery bigger using the same formula or else it may cost as much as a current model S

100kwh battery for Model 3 doesn't necessarily mean more weight. Its been a couple years and the battery cocktail may have improved significantly the energy density for each battery. Same number of batteries but each battery will hold more juice. Insignificant weight change. They just need to make sure the motors and powertrain can handle that much more juice and torque so there might be some improvement to individual components.

Great channel always straight to the point and then to the discussion. I think Tesla have again made a perfect move to keep their reputation up there. For $2000 if you want move performance on the long range 3 its a great deal. You can envisage other performance upgrade paths such as Ludicrous 3 maybe at the same time as Plaid S to keep the product placement gaps but its win, win, win ! I bought a P85 MS in 2014 and soon after came the duel motor, so you feel a bit like you should have waited but then Tesal upgraded the P85 and you soon forget anyway and think hell they are all brilliant. I think Tesla listen to owners and if there is an undercurrent of dissatisfaction or need they respond with upgrades or offers. Why wouldn't they? Everyone wins. And to my mind they also update the charging algorithms tweaking the performance / charging characteristics of the battery. Tesla have the data and the technology to continuously improve the ownership experience even years after purchase, no wonder we love these cars every time we drive them, even 5 years later.

Roll out is a 1-foot rollout (time starts after the car has moved 1 foot). It is the most common method of measuring 0-60 in US media/publications. Most US manufacturers publish their 0-60 times with a 1-foot rollout (IE. excluding the time it takes to move the first 1 foot). It is not common for manufacturers outside the US to publish with a 1-foot rollout (to my knowledge). Tesla has been known to publish both figures without clarification, although for the Model 3 dual motor non-performance, the numbers they publish are without rollout (4.4 seconds for the LR AWD non-P, 3.9s for the LR AWD+ non-P).
