Join me as we travel to the city of Pliska in Bulgaria to delve into the rich Bulgarian history and the origins of the Cyrillic alphabet.
We meet Karen, an Armenian who has made Bulgaria his home and shares with us the amazing tales of Pliska, the first capital of Bulgaria.
We visit the Cyrilic garden, the writer's alley and enjoy some amazing local and not so local, foods.
If you enjoy adventure videos from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, then grab your vodka, some zakusky and join me as we discover the origins of the Cyrillic Alphabet in the town of Pliska in Bulgaria.

Hi Justin, I've had conversations with Russians, Serbians and Macedonians and the large majority of them simply can't name the first tsar in Slavic history. Not many know anything about Boris the First, or his son Simeon the Great who were instrumental in spreading Slavic culture and literacy to the rest of the Slavic world. Modern "Macedonians" make pitiful attempts to claim one of a long line of Bulgarian tsars (tsar Samuil), because he moved the Bulgarian capital to Ohrid during a Byzantine invasion in the Middle Ages, when in that time there was neither a Macedonian nation nor race. But people like this man in the video know history very well, so well that they are willing to put years of work and sacrifice in, so that the truth be known, compared to people who make countless false claims online, but cannot back up their words with actions, like this man has. Thank you, Justin.

Now guys I want to mention something. Before the Bible been translated to Bulgarian there used to be a so called Trilingual Holy dogma which stipulated that only Latin, Greek and Hebrew were sophisticated enough and presumably holy so these languages had a monopoly on the information. So Bulgarian was the first to challenge and defeat these powers numerous times.

@extremefight Dude, what kind of "Armenian influence" you talk about? You haven't watched carefully enough perhaps: the guy with the white hair is of Armenian origin- Karen Alexandryan, and he has purchased and donated Armenian carved, big sized BULGARIAN letters from the Bulgarian alphabet and he has exhibited them in a history park as attraction. He applied for Bulgarian citizenship and I pray to God to be finally approved to have one. Take care!

What a gift to launch the video exactly on our National day! Bulgaria is just so old and can assure you full of history. Even for us Bulgarians, there are still many hidden places because not everything is Sunny Beach, Bansko or Plovdiv. If you go to Pleven, they have a super museum of the Russo'-Turkish war and the city with most trolleybuses in BG. Again, you will see a strong mix of culture. Justin, make a DNA test and for sure you will have an Armenian or Caucasian or even Bulgarian blood from your ancestors! You are always welcome to Bulgaria and consider it your land! Thank you for cherishing our culture!

Fantastic video! A little correction - Knyaz Boris was the first Bulgarian tsar (knyaz), as he is the one that baptized Bulgaria and this title is given only to christian monarchs. Because we were pagans before that, none of the previous rulers was a tsar. They were khans. That goes to both Krum and Tervel (the savior of Europe).

Very nice video, but the Armenian told you the manipulated version of Bulgarian history.(mostly durring communism by order of ussr). The story that Asparukh said "here will be Bulgaria" is nonsense and is not documented in any medieval or later manuscripts. In 681, Asparukh did not found Bulgaria. In 681, a peace treaty was signed after a war with Byzantium, with which the Eastern Roman Empire officially recognized the existence of the Bulgarian state. Also, if you see wax figures or portraits depicting Bulgarian rulers as Asians with shaved heads wearing animal leathers, you should know that this is manipulation. In all medieval books, Bulgarian rulers are depicted in Byzantine clothes because our medieval culture and architecture was strongly influenced by Byzantinian empire .

Bigger than Rome"... : Rome was the world's largest city during the imperial era (i.e. the period between the beginning of the Christian era and the sixth century) /"The cyrillic is used by 202 nationalities" : there are 195 countries in the world / "The cyrillic has been created in Pliski" : the inventors are the brothers Cyril and Methodius from Thessaloniki...

No greek emperor…it’s a roman emperor….. Mihail Ataliat - "History": "...misis are certainly the Bulgarians, who later received their new name..." ⬛ 2. Zonara, dictionary: "Paeonians - Latins or Thracian people, Macedonians. These are the so-called Pannonians. The Pannonians are Bulgarians." ⬛ 3 Fouche de Chartres, French priest, description of the First Crusade 1096: "From here they went through the lands of the Bulgarians, who are called Thracians" ⬛ 4. Ioan Tsetsas, "Hiliads": "The Paeonians are Bulgarians". ⬛ 5. Homatian, describing the life of Kliment Ohridski, explains - "This great father of ours and beacon of Bulgaria was a descendant of the European Mizis, whom the people usually know as Bulgarians." ⬛ 6. Cassiodorus (6th century, Roman historian) writes that the Bulgarians are an old Mysian or Illyrian people. ⬛ 7. Enodius of Titius (473-524, bishop, court historian of the Gothic king Theodoric) also states that the Bulgarians are an old Mysian or Illyrian people. ⬛ 8. Leo the Deacon (Byzantine historian from the 10th century) persistently calls the Bulgarians Mizis. For the Byzantines, the words Mizis, Scythians and Bulgarians meant the same thing, they used them as synonyms. ⬛ 9. The Byzantine chroniclers Ioan Skilitsa and Georgi Kedrin, reporting on the defeat of the Byzantines at the Acheloi River in 917 by King Simeon, maliciously write: "not the Bulgarian, but Simeon the Mysian defeated the Roman army with his characteristic Scythian madness". Skilitsa calls Simeon a Mizian, because the Bulgarians are Mizians, as he is. And another important thing - by attributing to Tsar Simeon the "Scythian madness", the Thracians and the Scythians are equated in the face of the Bulgarian people. ⬛ 10. Theophanes and John of Antioch, when they talk about the Bulgarians in the 5th century, use the expression "those called Bulgarians" - because Greek and Latin chronographers and chroniclers used another name - "Mizi". ⬛ 11. Ioan Malala writes: "Arrived with Atreides and Samsi Achilles with his own army, once called Myrmidons, but now Bulgarians, 3000 people". This information is also reflected in the Old Bulgarian translation of the "Iliad", made at the time of Tsar Simeon the Great at the Preslav Literary School. ⬛ 12 John Tsetsas writes: "and then they all arrived in Avlis in ships, and with them Achilles, the son of Peleus and Thetis, the daughter of the philosopher Chiron, leading an army of Huno-Bulgarian-Myrmidons numbering two thousand five hundred." ⬛ 13 Ioan Tsetsas "And the peons are Bulgarians. Do not believe fools, to think that peons are different from them."
