A Brit On A Bucket-List Mission In Shumen Bulgaria 🇧🇬
Join me as we travel to Shumen Bulgaria to visit a place that I have been wanting to see for the longest time.
We wonder around the town in the rain and seek refuge in the local market of Shumen in Bulgaria.
I also share with you my reasons for travelling every year, during the month of June.
If you enjoy adventure videos from the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe, then grab your vodka, some zakusky and join me as I spend the day in search of an amazing sight and tick off an item from my bucket-list in Shumen Bulgaria

Bulgaria, my homeland and the oldest country in Europe that has never changed its name. I am Bulgarian and strong my mother gave birth to me; with beauties, abundant goods my homeland is sweet. I am a Bulgarian. I love our mountains are green, to call myself bulgarian - first joy is for me. I am a Bulgarian free, in the free end i live, everything Bulgarian and native love, cherish and love. I’m from Shumen but I live Uk from almost 20 years. The first thing that I do when back home ,next morning is to climb the stairs to the monument,go up there and take deep breath. Love this place specially in the spring time. But you are so right about the restaurant,is frozen food that is frying, the owner don’t change his menu ,same food for a years.

Justin, thank you for this video. I left Bulgaria many years ago, but it is still in my heart. One of the engineers building this project is a man from the tiny village of Rish, in the Shumen territory. We were neighbors and our parents were close friends. I played with his children at the time. He died soon after the monument was completed. Although his name is not mentioned anywhere, your video gives him credit for the great job he did. Even if people don't like it, it is still there and will be, reminding the world about Bulgaria.

I was born and raised in Shumen, live in the states for 13 years, and this was very funny and interesting to watch. Thank you, i wish you stumbled on people who can help you better but this is part of the tourist life. Btw I have that monument tattooed on my arm. I keep editing my post bc i am still watching the video, the Gordon Ramsay comment got me laughing so hard. So the monument represents when the Bulgarian country was established and from where it started. The Khan Asparuh the guy on the horse with the sword in the ground has said the words “this is where Bulgaria will be”. And another interesting fact is that the small pieces of the mosaic that are yellow are actually gold plated, back in the days ppl would come and try taking them off and then try to sell it, but it’s just a piece of glass covered with a bit of gold. Once again, cool video and thank you for the visit

I am from Shumen and I can tell you there so much more too see around there. There is the Shumen Fortress, which has centruies of history. Near Shumen are 2 of the capitals, from back in the days, called Pliska (7th century) and Veliki Preslav(9th century). Also there is a small town called Madara with an ancient rock relief named Madara Rider (Madara Horseman)dated between AD 705 and 801.The place you ate at Primo, is having very good kooks, but the waitress did not offer you best food sadly. Also where the monumet and fortress are located is called Shumen Plateau Nature Park spread accros 9,711 acres. There is also a very nice Historical Musium. I hope that info will be helpfull for you. I am sorry there was no one to show you around, I am sure it would've been a much better experience 😀

2-3 years ago we went to Shumen for a week. The monument 1300 years of Bulgaria is HUGE... You just have to see it live to realize its colossal scale! You just can't believe your eyes and the size of this thing when you're there. A man we met then on the stairs said that he was from the city and that 70,000 tons of concrete had been cast in the construction of the monument...

I am from Shumen and I've never expected that someone would visit Shumen hahah. Firstly, the weather was obviously terrible but i can tell you it's quite a relaxing city to explore when it's sunny. You would've appreciated and loved the monument even more if you climbed all of the stairs on a sunny day, walking around the green parts of the place as well without a rush and then going back down as you see all the healthy people going up and down But obviously the weather was horrible. Secondly, I agree that the food is horrible in the city and I really can't think of a place where they cook delicious fresh food that also looks presentable and in an easy location (because there are a few good places but they are ditched in a unaccessable for tourists locations because it is hard to find them if you are not a local and also they do not look presentable at all) I honestly would not recommend coming back just for this because it's mostly this that you can see and it being worthwhile to watch for a youtube audience. Near Shumen there's "Madarski konnik" which is quite famous

Shumen is a provincial centre, but the interesting places in this particular province are the medieval capitals Pliska and Great Preslav. Especially the latter. Pliska is where the Cyrillic alphabet grew into a world alphabet and in both towns, there are medieval ruins worth seeing.I have only been to Preslav, which is the second capital. Pliska was the first capital from 681-893. Veliko Tarnovo is the capital number 3, and Sofia is the capital number 4.

This brings memories. Done that trip so many times when I was a boy! At the bus station across the train station, right where you were, there was a little bookstore/news stand. In 1988 I was there with my mom, and they were selling the UK Morning Star newspaper -- from what I gather a left-wing publication, so it kind of made sense it would be sold there.... kind of. It contained an article about Wimbledon's FA final win over Liverpool, and the subsequent mass mooning by the victorious team. I am yet to see the rest of the video. I hope you took the stairs, LOL. My grandparents' house was just 100m from the bottom of the stairs, and we kids would go up to the monument all the time. 1300 steps, supposedly, to match the 1300 year commemoration of the founding of the First Bulgarian State. Not sure I can make it 1/10th of the way nowadays.

I am from Shumen. I came across this video by chance, and I am pleasantly surprised. I'm sorry, you hit the rainiest day and had lunch in "Primo" - the kingdom of frozen food. I hope you at least liked the monument. Although to me, it is just a monument built by the communists in their style - a huge, too much concrete like a russian bunker. It is a pity that you missed the Old Capital of Bulgaria - Preslav / founded in 893 /, which is 18 km from the city. There is something to see. As well as the "Madara rider" - the only rock relief in Europe from the early Middle Ages. And it is under the auspices of UNESCO. Anyway, I wish you success in your travels, thanks for the shared video.

They are (slowly) upgrading the lines with welded rails. One day the "chachak-chachak" will remain a nostalgic memory. As for Shumen, he somehow managed to avoid the nicer parts, e.g. the city park and the main street. Both the railway station and the market are in the older, poorer parts of town. Unfortunately, rail transport in Bulgaria has been in decay ever since the fall of the Communist regime, due to the much wider availability of personal cars.

Shumen is the town where the capitals of the first bulgarian empire(681-1018)were located -first pliska in the north of shumen and later arround early 900's Preslav in the south....Preslav was build by our first tzar(caesar in slavic or emperor) Simeon the great who used to rule almost all of the balkans....preslav was called the third rome and later second bulgarian empire capital tarnovo(the germans called it ternau, cause there was a frankish neighbourhood in tarnovo)also was called the third rome, cause they were both grand and beautiful cities -simeon built preslav for 30 years(the walls and towers of preslav were 50 feet or 16 meters high) ....the title tzar and the cirilic alphabeth both originates from bulgaria from late 800' after we addoted christianity during the rule of simeon the great father -Boris-Michael,who also gave 2 million lambs to make books for church service and to preserve the alphabeth, also he build one of the biggest catedrals in europe at that time the one in pliska close to shumen ....they are trying to restore it ,cause the remains are very well preserved...you can google it ...write down pliska basilika and you will see it it is worth seeing and visiting.....thank you for the good word you've said about Bulgaria......god be with you

Man, this is the city I was born and when I saw how incredibly lucky you arrived (no one travel whit trains in Bulgaria, I'm sure you can guess why) with the incredible weather and visited one of the ugliest restaurants (the waitresses lack a little education, otherwise they smile). If one day you decide to come again (I wouldn't) if you are interested in architecture they are certain places which they are trying to preserve. Quite interesting elements from the different epochs, give an architectural reflection of our past. There is a fortress from the 12th century BC (which I think you could see in very few places in the world, which in itself raises questions about Bulgarian civilization with castles, sewers and running water at the time. Тhe most embarrassing question is why people are more interested in the Pyramid of Khufu from 2000 years, but not in fortresses in Bulgaria from 3200 years.) Keep up whit the good work and make your goals. :)

haha i'm the same as u, I can't eat food that's bad. Even if I have already bought it. I love travelling but one thing that really annoys me is the airport food, so often I eat loads beforehand and then fast until I arrive to my destination. Luckily I travel in Europe so this is possible!

36:00 it's worth traveling there if you are interested in history both old capitals are there and this is just a fraction of the interesting places you can visit there. No offense but you just went to the market ate some strawberries and cherries then ordered some meatballs at a resturant and went to the monument by a taxi.

Just stumbled across your video and was wondering why you took the train instead of the bus. I heard that the trains are slow. I am visiting Bulgaria for the first time in July and flying into Sofia at 9:25 PM , then I want to go to Veliko Tarnovo the next morning. I joined a Facebook group and asked what is the best way to travel and he said the bus... I will check out the rest of your videos. I want to find a property with about an acre of land and a big barn of about 400m2...
