This is America's C-RAM Weapon System

Ғылым және технология

Counter rocket, artillery, and mortar, abbreviated C-RAM, is a set of systems used to detect and/or destroy incoming rockets, artillery, and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets, or simply provide early warning.
The intercept capability of C-RAM is effectively a land version of weapons such as the Phalanx CIWS radar-controlled rapid-fire gun for close-in protection of vessels from missiles; either weapon system also uses a forward-looking infrared camera to allow a defender to visually identify these target threats before engaging the targets.
One major difference between the land- and sea-based variants is the choice of ammunition. Whereas naval Phalanx systems fire tungsten armor-piercing rounds, the C-RAM uses the 20mm ammunition, originally developed for the M163 Vulcan air defense system. These rounds explode on impact with the target, or on tracer burnout, thereby greatly reducing the risk of collateral damage from rounds that fail to hit their target.

So, a pilot brought a few empty barrels. Tied them to a rope. Then tied the other end of the rope to a navy plane. Then launched. Dragged the barrels behind him. On the deck, then IN FLIGHT. Then did a fly-by around a navy vessel. And a LIVE CWIS started firing at it. At a friendly navy plane. That was dragging barrels. MIDAIR. Well now when you unpack it like this, it sounds like a complete fucking nonsense, doesn't it?

@Michael Hampton Wow, people who disrespect military are clueless to how the world works, if they werent out there fighting, then terrorists would be ripping nations apart unchecked, and who says they will ignore us if we ignore them? 9/11 doesnt. Any military serviceman has done more than you ever will and you will never be important to the greatest nation on earth, while every one of them are. you are INSIGNIFICANT. If I remember correctly, doing CIWS live fire exercises in the Navy, the ammo drum held maybe 1000 rounds. That is 10 boxes of 20mm ammunition. for a TDU shoot, we would upload...I'll say 4 or 5 boxes at most... 2000 rounds / minute, that is 33 rounds per second, and based on this video... and life experience, an engagement lasts 10 seconds at best... we are talking 300 rounds fired...that is $100 / round based on $30K per engagement. IDK, that better be a very charming 20mm round.

Still a sight to behold when one spins up.

I have a funny story about these. My favorite spot to watch sunsets at sea was a small weather deck under the port/aft CWS mount. I would go there on my dinner break and have a smoke while watching the sunset. The hatch that goes out to the deck had a flashing red light that indicated the gun was hot and not to go out. Well, they never turned it on. I am standing there, 15 feet away from that monster when it opened up and let out a 1000 round burst. No hearing protection. I thought it was the End of Days. The noise that thing makes is stunning. My adrenaline glands pumped a quart into my system and I felt like I was high. I cannot explain using words what it was like. We had one of the phalynx model CIWS on the aft of the frigate I served on in the 90’s. It was pretty bad-ass to say the least. We use to practice hitting an air target at sea. A plane would tow a big, red aluminum balloon on a 1,000 foot cable, we called it the killer tomato. We rarely fired more than 6-8 seconds at a time but at 60 rounds a second of 20mm thats a lot of hurt. Real wicked to see it fire at night.
