The air force has been trying to retire the A10 for decades. The AF doesn't want to support the grunts on the ground or be on call to destroy Taliban hideouts. AF generals want ever expensive projects, fancy new planes so they can be in charge of new programs. They want high flying planes and fancy air to air combat planes while strains of "up we go, into the wild blue yonder....." They want the glory, not the drudgery of support the ground troops and being second fiddle.

This is a common misconception, even in the video. The A-10 was designed for a ground attack role, for wars that never happened (large tank battles after WW2) and quickly became obsolete due to tank armor improving, so it was given the role of CAS. Even then, it was not considered the best at this because A models lacked the capability to drop smart munitions, so to attempt to prolong it's life received a major upgrade.

Both the A-10 and AC-130 are totally useless against militaries with any real air defenses, and the A-10 was rendered obsolete at the tank killing role before it even entered mass production due to advances in Soviet armor design. There's a reason nobody buys A-10s when they're more than happy to buy our F-16s, F-15s, and F-35s, it's that the A-10has little purpose in a world of both modern anti-air defense and precision guided munitions. Hell, it was regularly outshone in the tank killer role by the F-111 Aardvark in the first Gulf War, it's reputation is underserved.

That's not how you plan to win wars. The gun is far more useless than it's worth to build an entire plane around. You're supposed to apply your weapons according to your enemy's defenses, and Russia and China have had armored vehicles that can shrug off 30mm depleted uranium for nearly half a century. It's called "planned obsolescence", when they come up with a real money-maker like the F-35, they try to shoehorn it into other roles and pretend it fills them, even if they have a platform that's cost effective in the role. Like the F-22, the absolute king of the sky, but they can't sell that technology, so they destroyed the tooling so they will never make another, but they make bank on the F-35 because they can sell it to friendly nations, even if it is only 30% combat effective across the fleet. They did the same with the F-14 and the A-6, Northrup had designs for an upgraded F-14 Tomcat that would fly circles around anything in the sky, but someone else greased the right palms, now we have "Superhornets" and "Lightnings" that are barely a match for the old Tomcats. They can't make money building an unglamorous ground attack aircraft that looks funny, the generals like fighter jets, the faster and more expensive the better.

The A-10 has been in my top favorites for Military Aircraft since I was a child. My family (Mom's and Dad's) were both Military in every branch except the USCG and the recently formed Space Force. My Grandpa (Mom's Dad) was very familiar with the GAU-8A Avenger as he started his Military service in WWII in the Army Air Corps, then serving as the chief aid to a congressman...which opened his service to the Department of the Navy, where he was the guy who approved funding for weapons and Vehicles from the F-14 Tomcat, Tomahawk Cruise Missle and the predecessor to the CWIS, the Phalanx. The Phalanx used the 30mm GAU-8A because Soviet Cruise missiles were armored with a thick Titanium plate that the 20mm M-61 Vulcan couldn't penetrate. However, the 30mm Avenger literally melted the Titanium plate with the Depleted Uranium AP rounds .....code for Funding Approved. My Grandpa loved the 30mm Avenger, as well as the F-14 and Tomahawk and he got me passionate about them as well. Excellent, video .

Ft Stewart 24ID 5-52 ada 84-88. 6 rotations to Ft Irwin. Witness that beast fire many many many rounds. Gettin chills right now thinking about it. I fired the vulcan 163 20mm once. Was allowed a 100rd burst, it was over in less than 2 seconds. I was a track mechanic not a gunner so it was cool they let me fire it. Once a year ft Stewart would bring out a platoon of everything it had, hunter army airfield included. Had the cobra and apache. A 10s.... all live fire. Storming Norman was my commading general until 86 when he suddenly left for the pentagon, just before desert storm. McCooly took over

I was in the Army back during the mid 1980s. I took basic training, and AIT School, at Fort Bliss, Texas; in short, my MOS was 16P10--Chaparral Missile Crewman. In other words, I was in air defense artillery: we shot down enemy aircraft. But we had to be able to identify friendly aircraft apart from the enemy(…ies). In those days while I was in boot camp/AIT, the A-10 was known as the “Thunderbolt”. Not the “Warthog”--I don’t know when or how that name was changed.

I wonder how well a retired A10 would work as a private aircraft. I imagine it would eat fuel like crazy. But the fun you could have jacking it around in the sky. And without the gun weight (if you could get the CG right) it would probably fly.very lightly.

I got to see one of these at the Dayton air show in 2011 , very impressive weapon system. I don't think it would be smart to retire the avenger itself but maybe repurpose it in another aircraft or in a ground vehicle. If you run you'll just die tired really applies to that thing.

@@toobcat24 no, the 30mm DU rounds can’t penetrate modern tank armor. There’s a reason why virtually every military on earth, including the US, uses missiles or huge tank guns firing 120mm DU APFSDS ammo. 30mm is way too weak even with DU ammo, and the gun is way way less accurate than an AGM or laser guided bomb. Edit: the GAU-8 couldn’t even deal with T-72s that entered service around the same time as the A-10, it’s a meme weapon rendered totally obsolete by precision munitions.

Cool story in talil airbase about 15 hours after it was captured we were landing and refueling a10s and a female pilot got shot up and landed safely. However got pics next to her and the aircraft. Years later seen her story on some channel.. God bless our troops and veterans.. have a safe and pleasant memorial day!!

Congress has nixed retiring the A10 twice already, and AFAIK, will not allow the AF to retire it a third time. The A10 is actually getting new upgraded wings and jet engines and will good to at least 2030. "A key component of the A-10C's upgrade is the integration of new weapons systems. This includes the addition of advanced precision-guided munitions and updated targeting pods, which will enhance the aircraft's ability to engage moving targets with greater accuracy" The A-10 Thunderbolt II, better known as an A-10 Warthog and famous for its “BRRT” sound, is set to be fully pulled out of U.S. Air Force service by 2029. Wanna Bet?
