The air force has been trying to retire the A10 for decades. The AF doesn't want to support the grunts on the ground or be on call to destroy Taliban hideouts. AF generals want ever expensive projects, fancy new planes so they can be in charge of new programs. They want high flying planes and fancy air to air combat planes while strains of "up we go, into the wild blue yonder....." They want the glory, not the drudgery of support the ground troops and being second fiddle.

This is a common misconception, even in the video. The A-10 was designed for a ground attack role, for wars that never happened (large tank battles after WW2) and quickly became obsolete due to tank armor improving, so it was given the role of CAS. Even then, it was not considered the best at this because A models lacked the capability to drop smart munitions, so to attempt to prolong it's life received a major upgrade.

Both the A-10 and AC-130 are totally useless against militaries with any real air defenses, and the A-10 was rendered obsolete at the tank killing role before it even entered mass production due to advances in Soviet armor design. There's a reason nobody buys A-10s when they're more than happy to buy our F-16s, F-15s, and F-35s, it's that the A-10has little purpose in a world of both modern anti-air defense and precision guided munitions. Hell, it was regularly outshone in the tank killer role by the F-111 Aardvark in the first Gulf War, it's reputation is underserved.
For an old aircraft, that sucker is OP.

I used to have a little A-10 model when I was a kid. Such a cool vehicle. Perhaps it will live on in drone form somehow.
I get that A-10's are slower than F35's, but they are for different roles. A-10's loiter over the battlefields for hours, where the F35's can't. But the budget battle is forcing the decision to pick one platform or the other, which is a really hard pill to swallow because the A-10's have been perfected to be durable and powerful.

Swapping from A10 to an F35 is like a farmer replacing his John Deere tractor with a cybertruck. This isn't about performence, this is just about pure greed. You get something like five A10s to every one F35. The suits don't care about winning battles, they just want your taxpayer dollars in their backpocket, plain and simple.
Older A10's which reached the limits of their affordable upgrade lifespan are being retired in favor of a new Super A10 Warthog in development. Multiple tests have been run pitting the F35 against the A10 in the same missions and the older A10s keep surpassing the F35 in performance.

@@mikemelina7395 News that I read said they were putting the Super Warthog into service in the coming years. The older Warthogs were still more effective than the F35s by a significant amount. They've tried retiring A10 multiple times over past decades but never seem to put the aircraft to rest. Its the arguably the most resilient aircraft in service anywhere, it can take substantially more damage than the F35 and still maintain flight.
@KaDuWin
20 күн бұрын
@@justmynickname The A10 showed it was better at lower relative cost of flight operations, low speed strikes, low level strikes, resiliance against damage while maintaining the ability to stay in flight. There were a number of places it excelled over the F35. The F35 has stealth, speed, and dog fighting advantages but the prime missions of the A10 has never been focused on scenerios that needed those specific traits. Plus the F35 is more expensive and has had more reliability issues in recent years that the A10 never had at all.
I understand that she's getting old, but would it be feasible to design a new and more capable airframe around the gun? It's combat record speaks for itself that it has had and can still have a very effective situational role in our military. It just seems too effective of a weapon system to let die. Not every situation or adversary is loaded with high tech air defense.
@sammiches6859

That's not how you plan to win wars. The gun is far more useless than it's worth to build an entire plane around. You're supposed to apply your weapons according to your enemy's defenses, and Russia and China have had armored vehicles that can shrug off 30mm depleted uranium for nearly half a century. That would be an egregious waste of money that could go into more F-35s.
@mikemelina7395
21 күн бұрын
It's called "planned obsolescence", when they come up with a real money-maker like the F-35, they try to shoehorn it into other roles and pretend it fills them, even if they have a platform that's cost effective in the role. Like the F-22, the absolute king of the sky, but they can't sell that technology, so they destroyed the tooling so they will never make another, but they make bank on the F-35 because they can sell it to friendly nations, even if it is only 30% combat effective across the fleet. They did the same with the F-14 and the A-6, Northrup had designs for an upgraded F-14 Tomcat that would fly circles around anything in the sky, but someone else greased the right palms, now we have "Superhornets" and "Lightnings" that are barely a match for the old Tomcats. They can't make money building an unglamorous ground attack aircraft that looks funny, the generals like fighter jets, the faster and more expensive the better.

@@YugaRider You must be a special kind of expert. "Modern precision munitions"? The GAU8 will put 40 rounds of 30mm within a 40' circle from 3/4 of a mile...in one second. A 5 Mil cone of fire is more accurate than a pilot can shoot in most cases, so more accurate than necessary, especially considering that a two second burst is putting 120 DUAPI rounds into the beaten zone with ~150,000ftlbs of energy behind each round. Reactive armor isn't going to stop it, 18" thick plate isn't going to stop it...the gun kills everything. What "modern tank" won't it kill? I've listened to marines and soldiers telling stories about it being nothing short of "ex-machina" level intervention from GW1 to the GWOT, and seen what it does to armor. The GAU-8 can’t adequately deal with more modern T72 or later tanks, and has to rely on AGMs or laser guided bombs to score kills, which just begs the question of why even bother with an A-10 when much faster or stealthier aircraft with better sensors exist. Also lol at the A-10’s performance in GW1, it was a less effective attack aircraft than the F-111 in terms of tank killing due to its superior sensors and ability to drop laser guided bombs on tanks at night.

The A-10 has been in my top favorites for Military Aircraft since I was a child. My family (Mom's and Dad's) were both Military in every branch except the USCG and the recently formed Space Force. My Grandpa (Mom's Dad) was very familiar with the GAU-8A Avenger as he started his Military service in WWII in the Army Air Corps, then serving as the chief aid to a congressman...which opened his service to the Department of the Navy, where he was the guy who approved funding for weapons and Vehicles from the F-14 Tomcat, Tomahawk Cruise Missle and the predecessor to the CWIS, the Phalanx. The Phalanx used the 30mm GAU-8A because Soviet Cruise missiles were armored with a thick Titanium plate that the 20mm M-61 Vulcan couldn't penetrate. However, the 30mm Avenger literally melted the Titanium plate with the Depleted Uranium AP rounds .....code for Funding Approved. My Grandpa loved the 30mm Avenger, as well as the F-14 and Tomahawk and he got me passionate about them as well. Excellent, video .
@YugaRider
13 күн бұрын
Whoever told you this was completely wrong. The Phalanx uses a 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon similar to most fighter aircraft, not the 30mm GAU-8, which would be pointless overkill against Soviet missiles. Also, the "titanium plate" thing sounds like total bullshit, and there's no way anything as inherently lightweight as a missile is going to be loaded down with armor so thick it can shrug off 20mm tungsten armor piercing rounds.

I was in the Army back during the mid 1980s. I took basic training, and AIT School, at Fort Bliss, Texas; in short, my MOS was 16P10--Chaparral Missile Crewman. In other words, I was in air defense artillery: we shot down enemy aircraft. But we had to be able to identify friendly aircraft apart from the enemy(…ies). In those days while I was in boot camp/AIT, the A-10 was known as the “Thunderbolt”. Not the “Warthog”--I don’t know when or how that name was changed.
The Air Force really needs to quit screwing with this damn plane.

I wonder how well a retired A10 would work as a private aircraft. I imagine it would eat fuel like crazy. But the fun you could have jacking it around in the sky. And without the gun weight (if you could get the CG right) it would probably fly.very lightly.
I got to see one of these at the Dayton air show in 2011 , very impressive weapon system. I don't think it would be smart to retire the avenger itself but maybe repurpose it in another aircraft or in a ground vehicle. If you run you'll just die tired really applies to that thing.

Congress has nixed retiring the A10 twice already, and AFAIK, will not allow the AF to retire it a third time. The A10 is actually getting new upgraded wings and jet engines and will good to at least 2030. "A key component of the A-10C's upgrade is the integration of new weapons systems. This includes the addition of advanced precision-guided munitions and updated targeting pods, which will enhance the aircraft's ability to engage moving targets with greater accuracy" The A-10 Thunderbolt II, better known as an A-10 Warthog and famous for its “BRRT” sound, is set to be fully pulled out of U.S. Air Force service by 2029.
