I have a Poulan pro 22 inch front wheel self propelled mulcher bagger side discharge with the 6hp from the early 2000s and it's a fantastic mower. It still runs and cuts like the day I got it, I do like you maintain all my equipment regularly. It still starts on the first pull. I never had the chance to use a Toro, they do seem like awesome mowers. That was super cool of you to give your Toro to him. Your a great guy JB!!! Love the content my friend.

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. I've been using Toro mowers since the early 1990s. My experiences have been very similar to what was mentioned in this video. The best 21" mower Toro has made is the current commercial 21" series that first came out in 2014 and continues today. Equipped with either the commercial Kawasaki FJ180v or the Honda GXV160 engine, they are incredible mulchers and very good baggers' wet or dry. They are heavy due to the fact that they're built like tanks but very durable and efficient. The only problems I've had with them are: 1. When mulching damp/wet grass, it spits clippings behind the left front wheel. Then, your left rear wheel goes over those clippings and they get stuck on the rear left wheel. This then requires you to go back over those clumped clippings. 2. Cost...Boy have these commercial 21" gone up a lot in price the past few years. I live in Canada. A few years back, you could get a commercial 21" for $1500-$1800 depending on the model. Now, the same mowers are up around $2500-2700. That's double the price of the Super Recycler you have in the video.

Great video & information! Purchased our 2005 commercial recycler about 3 weeks ago & it cuts great, especially on our bermuda. Does well on mulching of our fescue too, but not a fan of the low max HOC. The mower is heavy & somewhat cumbersome if need to mow around obstacles, but becoming more adept on handling the mower. Still looking for a bag for our mower, but nothing yet, which may be a deal killer on keeping the mower. It is a beast & will mow just about anything w/o an issue. Like the guys said, if can find one of the older models & keep them in shape, then they should last even longer.

I feel as if this video was talking to me directly! I have an 8 year old Craftsman push mower with a Briggs 163cc/7.25 engine. I know it's a "craftsman" and not up there with the high end mowers but it has really served me well. I have done all the things necessary to take care it. Here recently I had to replace the plastic carburetor and the front wheel assembly is starting to separate from the mower deck. I have thick St. Aug. and have been wanting to upgrade to a more top end mower. Since seeing the new Toro Super RecycIer I have been really leaning towards purchasing one but after watching this video plus others like it with the same views. I am having second thoughts, The Toro is definitely pricey and don't want to buy another mower for 8 more years! But these days is anything built like things used to be(?) Things are being made with less quality parts at outrageous price points. Thank you for the video it was classic!👍🇨🇱

Great video, and a great transaction at the end. It's probably a relief to you that the mower will be in good hands. Now, me being a Snapper guy, i would suggest that if 1 of your local subscribers had a few Hi-Vacs and Ninja walk-behinds of various vintages, that could be another interesting one. You could really end up in the weeds with really old Snappers, where you might come across one with a 2-cycle Robin engine, or a Tecumseh engine that you haven't seen in a long time.

I like your idea of moving pull rope to the left side. I will do the same. On my 2016 Personal Pace Super Recycler, I just replaced the Recoil/Blower Shroud because the rope wore through the metal ring and caused a notch to appear in the plastic housing. The rope would catch in the notch and get stuck. The shroud cost $55.22 + tax. Thankfully it was less than a 5 minute fix. And also it includes a new rope and coil installed so that has been replaced before it actually broke. My father and uncle have had two different Toro dealerships throughout my life. I’m 48 years old now and since I was a little kid I have been fortunate to have all Toro lawnmowers except only two. (1) MTD, (1) Craftsman (3) Toro. I’ll never own anything but Toro for the rest of my life. Thanks for your content and channel. - Brett, South Dakota.

Bought one in 2008, a year later the coil gave out, then some years later the gear on the rear wheel drive transmission stripped out, and no more self propelled, which seems to be a common problem. I really like the personal pace, but other than that found the mower no more, or less reliable than the craaftsman models I had. Also it had electric start, and the battery wouldn't hold a charge anymore, or the started crapped out.....can't remember. Also it had a key to start, just one, was a PITA making sure you didn't lose it.

Update: ((optional add on) Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) does fit all new Toro mowers that have the new baby carriage curved shape. IMO you could make your own Toro's BTAH (Black Traction Assist Handle) from 2 pieces of wood in ((L) shape) and some bolts and washers. Toro's BTAH converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward). This is needed on steep hills where you need the Toro mower to pull you and this powerful mower up the hill without any effort on your part. The powerful Toro mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode). Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill. Thank you for your help and understanding on this Toro (back breaking) mower issue.

I had a 1993 Super Recycler for 20 years and gave it to a friend when the drive cable broke. The new 2013 Recycler unfortunately came with plastic gears on the wheels that wear out eventually. After researching I changed to the wheels with metal gears but had to change the pinion gears to match the wheel gears. There’s still some gear slippage occasionally and I’ll probably have to replace the pinion gears or wheels or both eventually. I think in 2014 Toro changed back to metal gears in the wheels.

Hey Moises! Honest opinion… loads of engine issues I’ve seen over the years and the decks rot out fast. Had a handful of those in the garage. Gave up fixing them and just started ripping them down for parts! Thanks for watching!

I just picked up a commercial model with the Suzuki 2 cycle engine. Excited to get that one going. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen one, but a Super Recycler (2000 model) with a Kawasaki engine and personal pace popped up in my area! It’s got a special paint job that was only offered on these limited run models and also a 10 year warranty. Only $60 but the drive doesn’t work. Should I go for it?

For $60 I would go for it! Could be worth it!

@@GarageGear Provably will! In your opinion what’s a better cutting deck the Toro commercial model deck or the John Deere JX75 style deck? From your experience which gives a better cut?

@@ChicagoSirens for mulching I would say the toro deck. But for bagging I would say the Deere! 👍

Have a question for you and Tom. I have a Toro Super Recycler model 20437, think it’s a 1994. The field mice got to the grass bag during the winter and chewed it up. Went looking for a replacement and can’t find one. Is there a bag I could purchase and using my current frame install it on? Another option would be a mesh material and sew it on?

I would keep an eye on eBay! I’ve seen them pop up from time to time.
