    I have a super recycler for 20 yrs and no complaints. You have to make sure to clean the kickers to work efficiently and get a nice strip on the lawn. If you don't clean it will leave grass clumps.

    I remember back in the day, just about everyone used a side discharge mower. I still do. Sometimes I use the bagger. I just never was a fan of mulching. This is a really nice mower! The engine has a really good power. Toro builds great products!

    I bought a 21" Personal Pace with the blade brake and the Toro engine, I've been very pleased with it so far. It replaces a 1988 Toro Self-Propelled aluminum deck with blade brake and a Suzuki engine. I'm a little let down because I only got 32 years out of my old one!

    We bought the same mower back in 1991ish for my parents as a gift that had the new Briggs/Toro engine to replace Suzuki engine. My brother is still using the mower today. Kudos to Briggs/Toro for designing a good engine. A couple of years ago the carb fell off from machine-while it was running! I guess the gasket dried out after 30 years and bolts lost preload.

    Nice review. I LOVE the SR4, have for years. Had three of ‘em at one point, recently got a newer one with the flip up handles. Best 21” walk behind mower there is IMO. The personal Pace system can’t be beat, it’s simple, reliable and easy to work on and most importantly IT WORKS! I hope whoever invented it is a multimillionaire because that’s a game changer AFAIC.

    Taryl, my father bought a Toro walk behind self- propelled in, 1974 that I ran until 1995? Very good machine these Toro's... I agree, wash out the machine right after using, including the top and mulch plug area like you said....

  • @lwthowe
    @lwthowe4 жыл бұрын

    I have one of these that's about 10 years old with a Briggs engine, self propelled and I absolutely love it. I love the Personal Pace feature the best. It's so much easier than Honda's paddles which are hard to hold steady on uneven ground. I love the adjustable folding handle, something that Honda doesn't even have. I love how quiet it is, the good mulching job it does, and the way it continues to start easily with 1, 2 or 3 pulls even after 10 years. I also love that it has enough horsepower to easily mulch my lawn. I had a Honda before this that did not have enough power to mulch and it was constantly plugging up under the deck. I've done all the maintenance myself on this and never had it in the shop. I have never used the water pressure cleanout, though. I am definitely going to buy another one of these when this one shoots craps, but not sure which engine to buy now. This Briggs has been surprisingly good and easy to start and very dependable. Thanks for the review. Love what you do.

    I've had 3 lawn mowers during the 43 years of owning my house. First one was an Iron Horse mower with a rope start 2 cycle circa 1956. Second mower which I still have is a 72 Lawn boy also a 2 cycle. I have a spare parts engine for it. 3 is a mid 90s Snapper which a friend of my wife gave us when they moved. All 3 mowers were free. The Iron Horse was running when I gave it away. Never opened a mower box. Never bought a mower.

    We have a 1995 Toro Wheel Horse Recycler riding mower which still runs well, although we don't use it much for cutting anymore as the mower deck has become a bit too rusty and bent out of shape after a couple of decades of continuous use. Mulching apparently helped improve the health of our lawn which before using the Recycler was quite sparse in some areas but now is relatively uniform.

    Just purchased this mower from Home Depot. It cost $599....Mowed the lawn and it works for me. I like being able to stand it up to access the blade(s). The wash out system is weak (as demonstrated) but hitting it with the hose is easy. I had the Toro with the steel deck and it corroded through in several places so I use Fiberglass cloth and West System Epoxy to repair the holes. The mower still works fine and it is seven years old. This is why I purchased another Toro machine, this time with an Aluminum deck...

    I have a 1995 Toro 20476 Super Recycler that someone gave me 5 years ago!. It’s the best push mower I have ever owned! It has electric start and the Briggs and Stratton GTS 150 has a charging circuit too! It has a pressurized lubrication system and the blade clutch and stop is a nice feature! It even has the front mounted dethatcher and a drop fertilizer spreader that sits on the drive wheels. This thing will turn grass blades into dust! It does a better job of mulching than my twin blade Honda! The pyramid shaped air deflectors under the deck are the key to its awesome mulching ability !Just needed a carbatrator rebuild , new battery and a new belt. I'll be sad when this thing eventually craps out! There’s your dinner!

    Thought we might get to see a flywheel key/bent blade replacement, but it wasn't in the cards. I would really like to see a full teardown of that Toro motor. See how the oiler works, if it's a plastic cam and the cylinder liner and rings. You know, how many corners did they cut. I've got an older Toro recycler 3 speed with a funky Briggs motor. Good mower with a blade clutch and rear wheel drive.

    Great Video, Excellent Warranty, Good Looking Mower, Great Features with The Greaseable Rear Wheels, Easy Stow Feature, Personal Speed Control Is Great For Older People who Cannot Keep Up With it, Considering That The Grass Was Wet It Cut Exceptionally well, Older Mowers Would Clog With Wet Grass. The Mower Didn't Struggle In The Longer Grass From What I Could Hear. A Lot Of Push Mowers You Would Have To Lift The Front wheels and Cut It Down A Bit, But That BEAUTY Went straight Through It No Problems. Very Strong Engine For 159cc. If Anything This Engine Would Be My Choice ♥ It.

    I love this mower. I bought mine at the home cheapo for mulching exclusively and it does a fabulous job. My mower has the Briggs and Scratton engine so it doesn't have an oil drain plug, but I use a pump. Don't listen to Briggs when they tell you that you never need to change the oil and you just add more as it needs it. What a load of crap. Every engine has blow by and the gas will eventually contaminate the oil. That said I still love the way it mulches and the personal pace drive system. The only problem I have had is that the first unit would cut out if the engine was jostled, like trimming around a tree with roots above ground. You could also shake the mower on its back wheels and the engine would stop. I had no problem taking the mower back to Home Cheapo and exchanging the mower for the same model, which runs fine and does not cut out. FYI my old mower was a Snapper self propelled aluminum frame from the early 70s. In 1994 I replaced the engine with a Briggs I bought from a dealer and christened it my "Franken-mower". It ran perfectly 26 years before I decided to replace it with the Recycler. Perhaps it's because I changed the oil regularly and use Ethanol free gas from a gas station. That bottled stuff is 32 bucks a gallon, ridiculous. I pay 2.50 a gallon for the 93 octane ethanol free and use it in all my small engines.

    You’re right, it’s the LawnCareNuts favorite mower and that crowd loves it. I like the older ones. Have you run across the sputtering issue with the Briggs 163cc engine? Seems to be the biggest flaw with that engine.

    The sputtering issue is predominately a problem with the 190cc Briggs though I’ve seen a handful of complaints with the 163cc. I exchanged my 190cc version for another one and it hasn’t given me a problem.

    Neat. I have the SR4 20056 SuperCare I picked up for $25. Wasn't engaging the drive and the cables needed to be rebuilt. Used 1/16" cable wire and some 3M Silicone Paste after cleaning out the cable shell thing a ma jiggy with WD40 and piano wire. Was thinking maybe using piano wire... though didn't have anything long enough to go all the way through. Haven't done a solid wire rebuild yet. Anyhow... that got the blade running at full speed since was the break line that needed replaced since has the blade brake option. Wondering about hacking into this more modern design to improve mulching, i.e. adding the newer design blade mount bracket with the extra blades and the two triangle looking parts. Maybe even somehow fabricating with PVC pipe maybe and a heat gun??? the back stop for when recycling to cover up the chute to the bagger. Excellent investment IMO. I even found a front mount dethatcher that is a Snapper I'd though I can retrofit for $10 since even the tines are worth that alone.... though looks like Toro even makes a version that I've made photos of so can make the brackets to mount. Thanks for sharing! About to work on my first Honda engine tune ups on two pressure washers, the GC160V $20 Excell and GC160 $40 Generac. The GC160V is running funky, though steady when always triggering the pressure washer gun... but needs some loving. Next disability payment, I'll invest in the horizontal new pump for the GC160. Almost want to take one of the older briggs 6.75HP engines and upgrade the Excell or maybe just make a new better pressure washer. No biggy... good times either way and rescuing the Made in the U.S.A. parts/systems sure helps save in the long run. Amazing how cost effectively these systems can be safely even made to last.

    Taryl for sentimental reasons I’m going to hold on to my 1990s era GTS2 Toro Recycler. I think it’s a Briggs 5.5 and I brought it back to life after watching your series. But it’s smoking a little and chugging and doesn’t have much more life. The mower has an aluminum deck still in good shape. What out of the box replacement engine would fit this machine? I know Toro things mounted these engines sideways. Is a engine swap a do it yourself job?
