I tried growing Tatsoi for the first this year. I initially tried doing a 1010 tray as microgreens, but they dont like high density planting, and I discovered the taste and texture is soooo much better if you lower the planting density and let them grow out to nearly full size (8-12" across). They're delicious raw or lightly stirfried. Crunchy, juicy and sayisfying, straight from the pot. Less bitter than spinach. Yum. Ive got four 5" pots ATM, and im planning to start a bunch more, and allot a full grow rack to it.

@@EdiblePlants They seem to do great on my indoor grow rack, on a 17-7 light timer, with full spectrum LED strip lights. My only nit is when they're young seedlings, the stems are weak and leggy, and tend to flop over when the first true leaves deploy if unsupported. ive taken to cutting bamboo skewers in half and using them as miniature stakes until the plants get big enough to support themselves. Learning as I go. 🫠

@@RovingPunster yes, the ceilings are always leggy are usually transplant them into a little bit larger pot and plant them deep all the way up to the leaf

@@EdiblePlants I stepped them up fm 2.5" to 5" and buried them up to the main junction where all the leaf stems meet the main stem, and lightly mounded & compacted for support ... but theyre still a bit floppy. I was reluctant to bury any deeper, but im open to experienced advice. As for soil, ive moved away from straight potting soil due to insufficient drainage and overcompaction that fosters root rot (which killed the basil and jalapenos I started last nov). This year ive started ammending my potting soil with about 10-20% perlite, and 33% "70-30" (self made blend of coco coir & perlite, which is my base for trays of microgreens). It seems to drain far better, compact less over time, and is lower in soil pathogens. I usually mix up a 5 gal pail at a time, and stir in a little slow release fertilizer granules and a little powdered egg shell. So far, my tomatoes and pepper seedings seem to be thriving in it. I already have 13 five gal pails of tomatoes going in my grow room.
