From what I've seen, Chillua's Art games mostly tell a story with of horror elements in it and the scary parts usually comes later in the games with the beginning having a guy/gal working a normal job like delivering packages, walking home from school or like in this one, working as a convenience store worker.

honestly that's what makes it scary for me; the idea that your boring, mundane job or life can take a turn for the worse - it being gradual is even better imo, as it gives you time to stew in any nervous feelings (which is amplified when you have anxiety) legit one of my biggest fears is just going throughout my daily life and then something happening that completely changes how i'll be able to live; trauma, suddenly going mute/blind/deaf, losing a limb, being stalked, stuff like that petrifies me

The uniqueness is wearing off really quick. PS1 style horror games with VHS filters are piling up really quickly, I haven’t seen one of these games that hasn’t used the trope of “real life face plastered onto a low poly model”. IMO It’s going to need some time to mature as a genre, I’ve seen pixel art indie games maximize what they can do with the limitations of the style whereas these games look worse than the actual 5th generation games they’re based on.

That guy at 9:40 actually got me, I don't know how he doesn't even look startled by that in the slightest.

i bought and played this on my own time but i personally enjoyed it. it was mildly spooky for me and overall the suspense and atmosphere of being alone after hours in a convenient store was enough to settle me in and not make me feel bored.

In Japan, the number four (pronounced yon or shi) can also mean death (shi). That’s why we see it as a bad omen.

I heard this Dev's games are about irl incidents/myths done in a cryptic way

Honestly this game is really good at scaring people because it has amazing buildup, tension, and a sense of looming dread that stands over you because you know you're playing a horror game but you don't know when the horror will actually start. The game really gets you with that sense of "Nothing is happening but something will!" type of feeling, it's a shame that Charlie spent 7 years in the mountains of Jotun training his mental aptitude to resist any sort of psychological warfare and becoming the most powerful individual to ever exist to get what makes this game so scary for most.

I see this argument a lot that because everything is normal that's tension building I really don't see that at all, first of all working a normal job with normal people doesn't build tension, an example of good tension building is petscop the messages on the signs are purposely weird and off-putting so something seems off, other examples would be if you feel like you're being watched, but here it's just working a night shift at a gas station. Also even if it was good tension building it lasts WAY too long.

@@Lowtiervergil347 Yeah that's fair but the point is that it works for a lot of people, I get that it doesn't really work for everyone (Hell charlie's proof of that) but for others, the uncannily realistic look that the game gives combined with it being just a normal day despite you knowing full well that it's a horror game really works to build tension. Kinda like how you scream at characters for doing something ordinary in a horror movie because you have the context that something will go wrong.

I think having a prior understanding of these games and how the dev makes them, means you build expectation without realising. Having been invested in this devs work, the horror almost comes from a new angle, a bar they have set in previous games. It’s not for everyone and without having that context, I can 100% see why it would not be scary at all. As far as kinds of horror go, the mundane really speaks to some people and to others it’s just that.

it's basically just a fetch-quest that goes boo every once in a while, you could compare this game to tattletail and they'd practically be the same except in tattletail, you're actually doing things

Ikr and people d riding him say they're just walking simulators with nothing happening they literally aren't even taking it seriously to begin with to actually give the games a fair chance. they just watch the playthroughs without immersing themselves at all and keep thinking in their minds it's just stupid instead of playing it themselves.

Charlie and coryxkenshin are both my favorite creators on this platform so watching them play these games with different reactions is hilarious

i love this game so much i used to work in a convenience store with the exact same layout and i had to work night shifts and this nails the vibe so well charlie noticed the haunted door right away but that used to happen so often i freaked out when i saw the ghost on the cctv

I really like a good number of Chilla's Art's games, I'm surprised he hates it THIS much. Just a cheap, short atmospheric experience

Yeah I agree. Their games are more atmospheric than anything else. It's also only two smackeroonies on the steam store. Not meant to be a masterpiece

It’s pretty scary for me because I live in Japan and the atmosphere is really spot on. Plus I used to work night shifts in a convenience store lol

This is genuinely just working at a liquor store in mid-Missouri including the incessant bell tone of the door opening and having to bring 5 beers to a customer one by one.

word cannot describe the level of excitement Charlie is going though, its almost as if he is bored. That's how fucking thrilling it is

You really make me laugh at these hard times

Reminds me of working night shift at a gas station in a town with a population of >1000. Only people who would come in were crackheads, the homeless, and truckers. The ambiance of the lights and freezer were very spooky and accurate.

This comment section reminds me so much of his FNAF 1 video back in 2014, everyone was bashing his ass because he didn't felt scared at all unlike almost every other KZreadr

Yeah, and I think the only reason he isn’t scared is that he’s making jokes and stuff out of the games, and making up fun out of them. He’s also played a lot of horror games, both considered bad or good by other people. That’s how I became less scared of horror games, just by making jokes about them while playing or watching people play them. Most of the time in horror games sometimes they can be a bit goofy, so it makes the game less scary.

these cool vhs visual style games encapsulate the actual feeling that your watching on a old tv and seeps you into the horror very well. Now with Jesus himself!

I have no idea how Jacksepticeye can like this creator so much, you start the game, nothing happens, nothing happens, something ominous happens, the game plays a jumpscare, nothing happens, and then the game ends.

I was really scared when the video was interrupted by an ad, I may have nightmares soon... Definitely the scariest jumps care yet...

i would love to see him play the night shift - puppet combo , thatll give him a good wake up ;)

Biggest jump scare of this game was an ad I wasn’t expecting

09:39 is the best jump scare I've ever seen. Brilliant.

Watching Markiplier plat this I really loved this game, just the fact that the art style is great, the fact that you’re waiting for something bad to happen but it doesn’t till the very end, and just the idea of all those scary story videos by Mr.Nightmare we used to watch was now put into a game version.

I still watch Mr. Nightmare videos or just Reddit horror stories in general from time to time, and I really enjoy them! I think games like this one and videos like those create a creepy, unsettling atmosphere with horror elements rather than just being extremely action packed and scary, but some people like Charlie just can’t get into games like that, which is fine cause everyone has different tastes, it’s just too bad he can’t immerse himself in an off putting game like how Markiplier likes to do

Well Charlie doesn't have to like what YOU like, he has his tastes and you have yours and some people are simply harder to scare than most. Not to mention, I doubt he likes playing glorified walking simulators with pixelated graphics.

Eh, everyone has their different tastes, I do recommend you have some more common sense than everyone else and not just shit on Charlie because he doesn't like the same things you do, he'd probably enjoy Mad Father, I don't think it'd be much scary(unless you find pixels frightening) but it might at least be entertaining.
