Have you guys looked into the certification programs from the American Kennel Club (AKC) or the National Humane Society (NHS)? They have specific inside measurements, but an AKC emblem makes a kennel much more attractive, to me. Mostly because I've dealt with them in the past, and they actually give a blip about the safety of the dogs. Any extra panels need to slide out of the long side. Whether under the whole structure, or just under the topper. That kinda accordion hardware can get stuck with hair, pinch ears, and is a great spot to catch a foot if a dog gets squirrelly. The mag-latch is a great child/dog-proofing idea. What I am seeing, here seems about the right size for a corgi, maybe. Perhaps a mini scotty.
Just something that my wife pointed out, the coffee table designs are very, VERY, tiny for dog kennels. There are regulations on how big animal cages have to be. It would kind of suck to have someone buy the coffee table dog kennel dog bed, shove their bigger dog into it, and then turn around and sue you guys for injuries.
@kmcd6140

The way around that is saying that it's for a small dog, like a Dachsund. Anybody putting something inside that is bigger is "going against recommendations" and has little to no standing.

I'm currently very concerend about the size of these. you need enough space in a kennel for a dog to sit up as tall as they ever sit. That makes this...only good for very small dogs. The bottom panel on this not being flush with the store...that makes this a very narrow space for even a chiwawa.

The lift top is a must for me - it's one of the reasons I am going table-less in my living room until this comes out. If you raise the legs a little bit, you could probably create 2 slots to store panels underneath. I am definitely ordering this witth 2 solid panels and 1 cave panel - just so I have the flexibility to convert it to storage if needed. :)

Doug asking, "Are they blended?" is a huge give away that he has partaken of the dead baby jokes in the past. You don't quip that out on the spot if you aren't familiar with the tropes of the joke.
Build a second vertical panel inside the table to separate the dog from the lift mechanism. Frame that out inside the dog area, and now you've also reduced the size needed for the side panels, so they should now slip between the legs on the long side.
@dustyn4970

@@dustyn4970 Hope they do end up hiding it somehow. When you’re dealing with safety concerns for an animal, it’s gotta be top priority over all other design requirements.
Would probably recommend looking at ways to cover the hinge mechanism so dogs don't get caught in it (an internal panel would probably be enough on each side). As far as the side panel storage, why not slot them under the lid? if you're storing, you'll put them on the sides, giving you back the room, same for if a dog is in there as part of a kennel situation.

I was thinking the same about the interior false walls to create a slot for the lift hardware, but done right, it reduces the opening size just enough to shrink the length of the removable side panels, allowing them to fit between the table legs for front storage.

To be honest, I am having a hard time seeing the point of this specific product. The regular dog bed I understand, it’s great! Having owned dogs of all shapes and sizes, however, I struggle to imagine any situation where I would ever need/want to kennel my dog inside my coffee table; and if it is just left open all the time, then I fail to see the additional functionality from the regular dog bed besides offering a top surface. I am struggling to understand the “why this product” to this part of the dog bed project. Just a thought/opinion.
@trickster562
Жыл бұрын
It's meant for people with not much room. The dog beds they are going to offer take up a lot of space, so their reasoning for the coffee table/bed combo is to save space for people with less room. That is also why Doug is trying to keep the hinge top so it can be used as a work surface too. Making 3 products into 1 which saves a ton of space in someone's small apartment/studio instead of having a desk, coffee table and dog bed separate each taking up a lot of room.

You're missing the point of the articulating top, Like Doug said, all new coffee tables have this, thats why its the killer app. It simple, mount the lifting arms wider and enclose them from inside. That way when its closed they are hidden away from the dog compartment and it also keeps hair out of the mechanism.
@Wyrmwood Dog crates from your more reputable companies have latches that are able to be opened from the inside by humans for the same reason refrigerators no longer come with latches. Children have the propensity to crawl into things, get trapped, and die. Also, kids like to stick their heads between things like bars and get stuck and choke. It's why there are regulations about how far apart balusters need to be. It's common for a kid to climb into things with lids, something heavy gets placed on the lid and, you guessed it, the kid dies. It's one of the reasons the hope chest craze of the 1970s died out (along with some kids). It might seem morbid but it's important to think about safety. Wormwood's legacy will outlive anyone alive at the company today. Given the quality of the products you produce it's likely a lot of them will still be hanging around a hundred years from now. This concern is also a function of scale. Wyrmwood is no longer a garage business run out of someone's house. It is a mature business that hopefully be pumping out products for decades to come. Given that scale and those timeframes you need to consider that anything that can happen, will happen.

I really feel like they should get a pro from the AKC. Last I knew, they have a program that certifies things like this. An AKC endorsement would bump the market value by a good margin.
TBH I'm actually in the opposite camp from Jason: I think the "it's also a kennel" aspect of this is where it's failing. You've already got a win by integrating a comfy dog bed in the same real estate as a high-end lift-top coffee table - that's a product that solves a problem, and the space is sufficient for a small dog to crawl in and sleep. The whole "let's also make it a cage" thing is adding complexities that don't need to be there, especially when the end result is a dog in a small wooden box with prison bars, which isn't super enticing to begin with.
Doug needs to start listening to his design lead.

Add a panel inside on each side to seperate the hinges from the dog area. And as for the bars/panels, make fold down in side the bottom like you do for am old school kennel. One is a little longer and folds first then the other one folds flat on top of it.
YYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS TEAM DOUG!! Yes, keep all three panels , keep double panels, the top is fine, magnet latch bad. Side notes: -Can it just be a regular latch? -No, I don't think you need storage for multiple panels. Kill the extending topper. Those are great for access to more hidden storage. This coffee table is something else.
Love the dog beds, but with the dog table, I'd be scared to put anything on that table. The dog will move, stretch, turn, hit the sides or top and that will make the table unsteady. Especially if used as a crate. This is a real small space, not fit for many breeds of dog (the height is really not ideal to keep a dog in) and it'll be a hell of a noisy table.
@adambracewell8177

agree, as much as doug claims to be a "dog" person, I'd think secretly hes a cat guy. No self-respecting dog owner would make a space as small as that shoebox as a dog bed.
I dig the idea of making a storage vault that doubles as a way to keep puppers from messing with the top. Maybe build in an inch gap on either side to fit panels and it could work.
Hey friends. The larger dog beds are not sized correctly for side access for a large dog. They aren't tall enough clearance, and the doggo can't turn around easily in the space. Plus, many dogs sleep curled, and it's more of a square shape (or at least a deeper rectangle). Since you have folks with large dogs, you might want to do some tests. Could make a cute wyrmlyfe!

If your talking about the products in this video they are only meant for small breeds. Their actual (only) dog beds are completely open so no height issues.
Are they blended? Holy... How does THAT leap to mind!?
The coffee table would be great for cats too. My cats would love to able to hide away in there.
I can't help but feel the tables are too low to be used as dog crates. An extra bed? Sure. Leave them in there while you go out? Too small I reckon (unless these are only really advertised at really small dog breeds).
Seeing as my puppers is 16, she has no need for a bed or coffee table kennel bed. I would have gotten one years ago, but just to spite me she would still continue to use the floor. The damn girl has 4 real nice beds to use and maybe uses them every so often just to make it seem like it was worth it. Still think the modular table bed is a fantastic idea though and when I adopt another doggo it would be on the list to get as I think it is a swell product but just not for the fickle house beast I currently reside with. Hell she doesn’t even like cuddles so not much I can do to change her at this point in time.
If you make a box in the box, it also doubles as sound proofing for the dog. And you can still make it with a top access for the panels. Very good for 4th of July and new years.
This is a great idea. I just might get one for use as a cat cave. Maybe a few inches taller, but still great.
The subtle title changes to Jason and Doug to show Doug is the CEO again, nice.
We would absolutely love the "big pupper" version, a square table would stick out too far into the room, but the longer table with two directional lift top would be perfect for us.
Good design is making the product viable for both cats and dogs. Good marketing would be launching identical tiers naming the product of one for cats and the product of the other for dogs (same product) and challenging the pet owners to decide who spoils their babies more.
2 variants. Raised topper version without space for dogs under, with normal storage type options. No raised topper version with garage door style storage for the panels.
Hey guys! I'd love if the bar panel had some of the bars going horizontal, as that is how a lot of crate bowls and water bottles attach.
Oh MY god! Bobby, I watch that sequelitis video, probably, once a year. It's phenominal and perfectly relevant for modern games. Thanks for the reminder, it's probably due a rewatch.
If the lift top is a must, why not make it like a standup desk with locking spring pins? Eliminates the hardware for pet safety and makes more space?
Heard from a random comedian on a Mic Night: "You can never go wrong with jokes about children with cancer. They never get old" There was this universal quick snigger, because apparently the first thing as a group does is laugh because it's a joke. Then I think some of the audience actually processed the joke and made that groaning sound. Then I think the slightly slower people realised some people are not giggling but groaning, so they stop and actually process what they are laughing at and stop and groan.. Then a solid 5 seconds after the lul had ended and people were waiting for the next joke,... A lady at the back goes "THAT IS GROSS" I am presuming someone she was with had just finished informing her of the meaning of the joke.. The fact that it was so delayed actually made her outburst quite funny..
Definitely needs some type of door with a locking mechanism, something to separate the dogs and the hardware, and some form of storage separate from the dog, but other than that it’s looking like a real winner so far!
That magnetic latch fails pretty quickly. We had them on our cabinets for the kiddo and they jam up with a year
How does the dog get in and out when in kennel mode? I wouldn't expect my dog to jump in from the top. I also wouldn't expect to put the panels on after putting the dog into the kennel. Just curious!
i like the garage door idea just make 2-3 slotted pices have them on a dual rail that goes to either side 1 side cage and 1 wood pannel pull them down with a handle or indention to grab and pull, then store them in the top via magnet and "lock"so the dog cant move them
I don't have a dog but I love seeing all the iterations of coffee table dog bed combos. I like the design of a coffee table with storage the size of those dog bed tables. Which could be just getting the dog bed coffee table with solid panels (or windowed/jail panels) and without the bed padding.
Put guard panels on the inside of the hinges/springs. Then the hinges have a "slot" they can operate in. It will limit hair and also remove the potential for pinching / squishing a pet or child that goes under the table. Then put the storage for the sides just beneath the topper. That way when you pull up, the panels are right there and you don't need to worry about spacing or getting down on the floor. Could make the panels half-sized too for easier storage options and mixing and matching doors with walls or bars.
I don’t plan on getting one because of no longer having a dog, but if I was to get one I’m not sure I’d want the locking top. Are you planning on people locking their dog in your product while they’re away from home? Personally, I’d rather use a kennel in case of accidents. If you do decide on a locking top, as cute as the magnetic bone key is and I really do love it, I worry about a dog seeing it as a toy, chewing on it, and accidentally eating the magnet. I’d also like to see a lock on each side. As for a dog’s hair getting in the hardware for the lifting mechanisms, what about adding a trough or diagonal penal to shield them? It’ll be open on the top to allow the hardware to function without needing to worry about the pup’s fur or even the tail getting caught
Love these videos, keep up the great work!
You are killing the magnetic bone key? Thats one of the coolest parts!
Totally agree with Doug. If the raising top isn't part of it, unfortunately I don't think we would get one.
My dog would walk right through that lol
Y'all need to work through unintended consequences. Like, dog shut in, key gets lost, what then? Dog has floppy ears or a happy tail and is not protected from hinge parts, what then? UPDATE: Christaldi covered that at 8:22 Conclusion: Jason is right. Get rid of the lifting hinges. That would give back design space for other features, like panel storage.
0:34 Riding on cars! (epic guitar riff)
I agree about the hardware being inside and getting hair caught in it, but I also like the idea of the top being able to be opened while keeping the lid in the horizontal position, allowing access for cleaning out the dog bed while not having to take everything off the coffee table to do so. Perhaps you can give the customer a choice of the panels at purchase but also sell them separately, so people can get all of them if they wish. That would also cut out the need for storing them with the coffee table because only the people that buy extras are the ones that need the storage. I was thinking that the entrance could be put on the shorter side with a sliding door that can alternatively be latched in position or taken away entirely. It's not often that I give out free advice but you guys are really clever and I'm sure you'd figure it out. Pleasantries from Australia.
The only real safety concern is with the door mechanism. If a large dog is inside and has his big floppy ear on top of one of the boom arms as it closes, there is a chance he might get nipped.

This isn't tall enough for anything bigger than a toy dog. It needs 6 more inches for anyting in the medium category, and probably a full foot for large.
Remember, if you are using this as a dog crate, you have to be able to put those panels in while the dog is inside. Unless you have a panel with a locking door.
Ok, the key is amazing, but it needs a door panel, too. You need to be able to let the dog out without opening up the whole thing. A cage panel with a door that swings open, and latches easily. You need to be able to let the dog out, or lock it in, with a single motion.

An idea would be to use half of the top of the square as the piece that elevates as already designed here, but then to buy a hinge on the other end of the square so you could open the other half of the lid for simple storage (that being that they follow through on not having the interior open, but instead having a storage space and solid divider between the main cavity and the elevating hardware.

I agree with Jason on the "extending topper". Not a fan and getting rid of it would simplify things.
What if you took that garage door articulation idea and just flip it sideways? Rather than the “door” lifting up like it does for a garage, have the bars, slats, what have you slide out from the solid sides of the frame. I could see that being much easier if you shift to the square form since the spacing would be consistent on each side. Just have some kind of a recess they can escape behind so the dog doesn’t catch on anything while they’re not in use.
They could just make the top have a lock in mechanism on the 4 sides, that way you can just remove the top when you need the inside, rather than swing it open
I was jacked when I saw the larger table with the dual tops, but I understand why it's too specialized for commercial production. For the record, that format fits perfect for a sectional with integrated chaise (a square table wouldn't fit in the negative space). Anyway, please definitely don't lose the rising top - it's a feature we will never buy a coffee table without because it makes eating so much easier.
How do you make a dead baby float? 2 scoops of dead baby and add root beer.
as owner of both a large couch and a large dog i'd be curious to see you all consider a large size square table/ottoman style storage/dogbed piece, i'd been watching these videos as a spectator since it seems it's targeted towards small dogs, but it'd work in open floorplans pretty well i think
deep cut on the egoraptor video it's so good lol

I am a cat owner, and I like dog beds
You can't pinch proof the scissor hinge. I thought about covering the inside too and there are nicer hardware that aren't as open. But you should always look when you close the top anyways when you have a pet in there.
If you end up making the table a bit wider to do the storage access from the front that Bobby suggested then you gain the space to hide the lift mechanism in between two sidewalls
