    Given I'm currently making do with a crappy $20, 2x3 area piece of metal & plastic as BOTH a computer desk AND mini-painting station... I can see the need. But the thing is you would WRECK a heirloom piece of furniture using it like that. Some other person suggested making a non-veneer tabletop... this adds to the utility of that suggestion me thinks.

    I was thinking desk too but then I realized that it would mean actually putting stuff up and not leaving it all out on the desk and that ruined it. A murphy extension desk could be cool though. Previously I would add space to my desk using an ironing board to make it an L desk work area wise. You can never have too much desk space after all

    Since I think this is the first real top-heavy tall piece of furniture you have made, you may want to consider how to attach this to the wall for earthquake prone areas. Will extra attachment hardware be provided? Will instructions be included with it?

    Drywall anchors are cheap and plentiful. If someone lives in an earthquake area and doesn't already have a box of the good anchors then they haven't lived there long. It wouldn't be hard to screw through the back panel and add in extra anchors yourself if you need them

  • @stephenrodgers2107

    @stephenrodgers2107

    2 жыл бұрын

    Basically what the guy / gal above said. Folks in earthquake areas know this super well, and we just anchor appropriately based on weight, size, etc. Hardware only gets tricky if it stands away from the wall at all. So if this mounts more like a cabinet (flush to the wall), then you're probably screwing through the back panel (a la kitchen cabinets, some bathroom cabinets, etc.). Good thinking though!

It was one of my wood table highlights when I realised that after years or even decades of usage, my solid wood table top could be turned into a new table with just a little bit of sanding. • @Tinmouser

    @Tinmouser

    2 жыл бұрын

    Exactly. If they want it to be "heirloom", and sell at that price point, they should go solid wood. Not only it is way less work to make, you have to assume that a bar top is going to face a fair bit more abuse than your average tabletop. Just walk into any bar and look at the bartop. I don't think the veneer top would be cheaper or less work in any respect.

    I don't really drink so being a traditional bar is probably not likely if I were ever to get one (currently a mostly broke college student so money priorities are... elsewhere), but I could totally see using one of these for projects like miniatures and the like. Obviously I wouldn't use a really nice wood and would probably add a simple protective layer like a cloth to the counter (would store easily enough), but overall a very nice design with a small profile and that has plenty of application depending on the needs. Looking forward to seeing updates on this project.

    I know it would be crazy expensive but if you either got two of them or one that is double the width, you could have modular shelving and be able to put a flat screen in there along with other shelving. You would essentially have a table for 5-7 people when folded out. Use the integrated flat screen for integration with VTT or just some ambiance when gaming and maybe side shelving for your liquor and charging stations. If it is suppose to be against the wall it should have plug in capabilities. A good point was made about technology changing and how integration makes that shakey but there could be a middle ground where it can be built for ease of swapping out charging hardware. Especially if your goal is to potentially use this for gaming. Or have that be an upgrade feature. Get the base bar cabinet but you can upgrade it to have a power integration kit that is standardized. You might need to gauge interest on that to see if the juice is worth the squeeze for the manufacturing process but seems worth investigating.

    Maybe giving people a few different shelf options would be a good ide. Honestly, Doug's question was the first thing that came to my mind. They say ten bottles, but that's only if they're relatively thin, cylindrical bottles, it seems. Any thick or oddly shaped bottles would quickly limit it to 6-8 bottles. Or maybe people don't even plan to use it for booze. Either way, having different options or being customizable would be nice.

    Stools are an interesting design challenge. I feel like any hinged/collapsing options is going to be painful in the long-term if you can't be super-precise. Something that stacks so you can have 4 stools in the space of 1 and that still looks nice would probably be better.

    As a home mixologist, I'd like more capacity. At least 15 bottles. When you consider a standard mixologist will probably have one of each whites (vodka, tequila, rum, gin) so that's already 4. And then ppl also have stuff like a bottle of scotch or some different versions of stuff (i like rum so i also have gold and dark rum) so let's sy that's 2 bottles. Add in liquors you'll probably get to ten. Problem is that is the bare minimum. I have more then 15 I think. And then there's the bar equipment I'd want to store there, and stuff like syrups and bitters. What I think you guys should do I'd decide if this is a storage with a bar, in which case it need more space. Or a bar with storage, in which ten is enough. But I'd want maybe more functionality on the bar

    How about a Tungsten one? :D Obviously I'm joking, you'd either break your wrist or your kid brother's face. :D Or worse, your 24 year Scotch in your Murphy bar.

    At this price point, you should save an equal amount of money, just for buying Wyrmwood furnishing - so you'll have eg. $500k for a house and $500k for WW 😎

    Bobby’s next idea: wooden yo-yo’s with a slot on either side for a joint. Or maybe a combo yo-yo/joint carrying case…every time there’s some new hobby, not only is he familiar with it but he’s good at it too!

    I personally would definitely heavily consider purchasing a murphy bar if it was in the $2500-sih range. Going much over $3K definitely starts to get less appealing. Also just wanted to share a potential furniture idea with you: a high-visibility display case. I've been using a set of 2 cheap IKEA 3-shelf bookshelves to display my various collectables, but want something with a glass/acrylic door/panel without a large amount of framing that would block the display. Anything that looks nice typically has low-visibility, and anything with high-visibility looks too cheap/modern for my taste.

    Murphy-Gaming-Table... just saying ;) . Top storage / Display storage: books, dice, minis, display pieces. In the bottom storage: more books, more minis, crafting supplies. To increase table space: have two foldable "wings" laying on top (attached to the long sides of the table also with piano hinges).
