This Day in History: Car stereos on steroids

In the 1980s the average car stereo just wasn't enough. Drivers began installing big, loud multi-speaker systems to blast music from their rides. But not all drivers were happy about this new fad. CBSN looks back at the craze in its weekly segment, "The Way it Was."

Mid 40's?? Youngin' I'm 54, and can still shut em down.... just not competing anymore because only one competition a year comes any closer than about a 12 hour drive from me, and that one is STILL a 5 hour drive.... the drive last longer than the actual competition. Back in the mid 80's and early 90's, competitions would sometimes last 2 or 3 days, now you're lucky if they last 2 or 3 hours. I just bump for fun now..... I LOVE it when these "kids" pull up next to me thinking that they have a loud system..... the look on their faces when they realize that their vehicle is shaking because of MY system.....lol! Priceless!

I got the car audio bug in 1989. My first real system was in my brand new 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS Turbo. I had a Kenwood head unit a 4 channel Alpine running 2 sets of Altec Lansing coaxials and my bass was a 10" Bazooka tube powered by a Rockford Fosgate Punch 150. I was playing cd's on my Sony car discman which you had to insert a cassette adapter into the Kenwood head unit for it to play. It was mounted on a gooseneck stand. I was traveling with a case logic CD case with about 60 discs. It was like a suitcase. Times sure have changed. I was even rockin that fake cell phone antenna.

16 batteries and at only 6k? Back in the day it was more dynamic music nothing like today lol I personally don't like older stereo systems with bass higher frequency in the 60 hz sound I love today where with subs that go in the low 30 hz.

48 woofers having a total output of 6,000 watts for $62,000 adjusted inflation? Jeez. It takes one 18" and about $5,000 to achieve the same results in 2024. Damn.

MY DAD HAD A 1980 CHEVY CAPRICE CLA$$ICK BACK IN "93" THE STORIES HE TELLS ME ABOUT IT WELL FIRST IT WAS 2 The Crunch Procasts 12s and he had it in a plexi glass box with a hot shots amp he said when he was at the car wash that all the metal ceilings would be rattling and that a lady had came from the apartments from the back and she would have to tell him to turn the music down. My dad wouldn't even have the volume half way up and every thing was like already shaking! My dad has done car audio ever since he was like 4 years old all the way still to now so he knew how to adjust the system and make it sure all the mids hi's a d the lows were all equally set right and even his girl when she would be waiting for him to come home she would tell him that he would be shaking the glass on the apartment windows and one time my dad was cruising somewhere in the parking lot of some stores and his car shut off because of his battery and I think it was because he told me he didn't have a good alternator so he didn't know what to do he got out and he didn't want to leave his car there and the only thing he could take from his car was his Bass Tapes and some other stuff and but there he had to leave his car and when he went back I think the next day someone had broken into his car and took some of the stuff and his procasts CRUNCH 12s which were in the plexi box well long story short he wanted to make a comeback he was without a system for i think about a month then he went to some place where they were selling out some car audio stuff in like tents and my dad and his ex girl were looking and that's when my something caught my dads attention and when he saw it he asked the guy who was selling them how much? It was 2 "15" crunch procasts and the guy who was selling them told my dad well I don't how much I can sell them for my dad pulled out what he was saving and told the man who was selling them we you know what I'm going to give you the deal of a lifetime I think my dad had not even a lot and there he was walking away with some new Crunch 15s my dad told me that same day he got those 15s he spent all day setting it up the system and he said that when he was finished that it was more louder more bass and more better than before with his procasts 12s well my dad enjoyed his system you know my dad would BUMP AND THUMP even after Midnight to he would always play the old $KooL BA$$ groups from like 92" 93" 94" like Bass 305,Bass Outlaws,DJ Magic Mike,Techmaster P.E.B,etc all those bass groups from the 90s well one day when he was Bassing like there was no tomorrow in the night he was feeling really good about it when he came home you know parked his car and the thing is he would always look back before he would go into his apartments at his car well that one day he didn't even look back he went upstairs to his apartment and it was right on the top he would look out his window and see his caprice right outside when he would look down now keep in mind That Dad worked for the car for his system and everything he did he was still in middle school when all this was going on like in the 7th 8th grade and that night my dad fell asleep on the couch and my dad is the type that with Evey little noise he is going to wake up well the next morning his Ex was asking him Where's the car at and my Dad was like what are talking about and she's like the car its not there and my dad went to look outside and there was nothing there he went back inside to splash water on his face because he said he thought he was still dreaming and he told me that this time they took the whole car and the system and all the rare bass Tapesno broken glass nothing they swiped the car clean and my dad told me he broke down and was ANGRY he well the detectives hE called had nothing they couldn't even find any finger prints and told my dad they'll let him know if they find anything and they gave him their card and my dad still has it till this day and you my dad tells me that it could've been a lesson to him because he would give a lot more attention to his car or maybe just karma but I even tell my dad what did you do to deserve this A few years later he got a 84 Buick Regal it had 2 crunch 15s in it but they are not the procasts just the regular it loud and it bumps but my dad always says it not as loud as his Caprice I always telling myself that I'm going to get all the same exact things my dad had in his caprice the bass music, the system, same car itself my dad is always telling me about the factory paint it had because he got it like that it was a metallic blue royal blue but it looked like it had a candy on it it was a unique paint job on it. The way my dad explained it I'm always telling him I wish I could've seen it. I am a REAL BA$$HEAD MYSELF A SELF and so are my brothers I am really glad I came from someone like my dad especially since all this time later he is still working with car audio and a time my dad was an entrepreneur with car audio in the late 90s early 2000s but it just kinda died down from there and I am really glad my dad got me into Car Audio because without I don't know what I would do.
