I was a Fosgate guy. But I've ran Orion on occasion. Everything back then was Alpine, Kenwood, Sony etc. Today I'm still convinced Kenwood amps sucked the worst. The Orion high current was really good, so I ran batteries in parallel and used the thickest gauge out there. Blew many a woofer in my day. Good times !

Great video and info on the history of cheater amps, but of course we all know that their are so many different brands of cheater amps that it's so hard to cover all of them in one video!!! But all in all this was a great video and it gives people a good idea how cheater amps came about!!! For the people like myself and others who have cheater amps should feel lucky and very previlage to have a piece of history in the cheater amp category!!! I personally have the 1996 ROCKFORD FOSGATE PUNCH POWER 50M and 50x2 pair of cheater amps in mint condition in which I will never sell because I know that those are great amps and they are part of the cheater amp world!!! ✌✌✌

In 1990 I had a Punch 150 mono at 2 ohms on two 12's and a Punch 45 at 4 ohms on two 6.5, two 4's and 4 tweets in a 1989 300z Twin Turbo. The install was super clean and I dominated the Sound Comps around here in the under 200w class. It hit so hard I had to have the car in the shop to get a lot of the bolts tightened and add LockTite. Now, I'm 50 and run 950watts of JL Audio on all JL speakers in a Silverado with one W7AE 8". People swear I have 2 12's. Technology and music has changed, but good clean sound hasn't.

+1. Real nice understanding and tutorial of the "Cheater" 12V automotive amplifiers of the 1980's thru 1990's. High Current designs that when dropping the output impedance, as low as a half Ohm, the output power was raised exponentially. Ideal for low impedance, dual coil type sub-woofers ...

Ran my 225HHCAs at .25ohm. They lived a short life (one summer), but holy balls would they put out. And the power doesn't get raised exponentially. Every time you cut the impedance in half, you double power.

a good vid from ahistorical perspective. I feel it should be noted all of the amps are "class A/B" as an amp they will produce more wattage at lower impedes and also by raising the voltage. at the cost of efficiency.

  • @HifiVega

Hey man great video. Another aspect of cheater amps that you and others often fail to mention was the THD and input voltage at the rated power. I remember my USAcoustics amp being rated at 12.5 volts and something like .01% distortion. Running it a volt (or more) higher and pushing it close to clipping would render far more useable RMS power even at the stated impedance rating. Am I wrong on this?

  • @HifiVega

Fine job sir but it should be noted that these were all SQ monsters as well. I've retired mine to "light duties" and they sparkle with incredible clarity and detail. Class D isn't an option for me even though it has come a long way with improved sonics. Still rocking old school gear in my new school car because efficiency isn't a issue at moderate levels of listening.

I would road trip it for hours on end in the Texas heat wired @1ohm mono (with the gain on it all the way up lol, to be fair it really didn't distort at all though, well at least by ear).

As far as "cheater" amps go, in the underrated category, the MTX 2300 and 2300x (as well as the blue thunder pro3002) being rated at 150 a channel was just hilarious. My favorite amp by far. Would run whatever you threw at it, and make HUGE power. I always thought that amp was a huge up yours to RF, and I still run them today.

Best cheater amplifier was inside a Harman Kardon head unit. In audio competitions, there was a class for "self powered head units". The HK head units could send out a massive amount of current. We did 2 demo cars that always won 1st place trophies. One had a single 12", the other had a pair of 10" subs.

  • @HifiVega

Michael Sadorf according to Bernie it was the 2250 high current class a and only 10 of them were made. Them they changed the power classes and then he had to tweak the design a little to accommodate and it threw the class a bias off so it became the 225 high current competition amp.

....Oh yea, I remember these amps, my bro was Mngr of Auto Sounds Car Audio in Southern California 85-89. If not mistaken, it was 87 that that Nazi'esk noise pollution law was ratified & cops began spittin tickets like sunflower seed shells, also they used "noise" aka the rise of rap, as a reason to stop-question-detain- threaten-search-and sight you if they could hear your stereo, at intersection, next to you, with thier windows up. The ancient legislators who drafted this law grew up on Sodi pop, 2barrel carborators, & a 6 watt am radio wired to a single 3×5 posterboard paper open cone undermounted in dashboard by Henry ford himself. I recall the first time I heard a mini truck with dual 15"s 3"mids in door 1.5" tweets just above windshield, that was in 86 & they kicked us out if drive in, said it was to loud! This was during intermission when thier was no movie on......lotta haters of music & audio tech back then, they did NOT like the cars that go BOOM!!!.

I wonder about my oldschool power akoustik amp, it's rated at 400watts peak so I assumed 200watts rms at 4ohms bridged, but at 4ohms it made around 180watts rms.. at 11.2-11.8volts from a crappy little computer power supply that used to have a 14amp cutoff "it cut off until it died, I played with it and almost got killed, then it got stuck in the on position so it doesn't kick off, even turned over a starter to test it with it XD" but I do take it easy with the amp and not try to push the ratings, lowest I've taken it to is 3.25ohms bridged on 2 6.5ohm subs in paralell, and it rattled our skulls in my friends car... I still need to get a car to test stuff in x.x

I mean EVERY amplifier works that way because ohms law says so, although those.. 1/2& 1/4 ohm loads would typically put a "normal" amp into protection real quick, the amplifiers that can handle those loads isn't very accurate or high quality In its reproduction. This is why I've never liked spl, it's just not a high quality system, and nowhere near as expensive or difficult to build As a Sq system IMHO

  • @HifiVega

SQ is tough and they only labeled them cheaters back in the day because of the class designations
