Always amazing stuff. Interestingly, computers are devious when it comes to this stuff. If you SF it on Lichess with tablebases on, it just says the dry 'Kd8 draw'. SF decides to trade bishop for pawn early and play the exchange endgame, because that's where the winning chances are. They don't 'think' (ie consider) that the main line is the most challenging for White, requiring foremost 4.Bf6!! and less so 5.Bg5!: it's technically the easier draw as Black has to repeat the position or draw by insufficient material.

(@7:04) The problem with 1 Bg5 … is 1 … Rh8 since the white bishop is off the a1-h8 diagonal. Sure, white could play 2 Bf6 …, but black will just go 2 … Ra8 and white’s king can’t go chase it, or black will get his bishop on the h3-c8 diagonal and white will never be able to get it off. Black can also post the bishop at d3 where it can swing over to a6, or to f5 where it can control the h3-c8 diagonal.

So as a noob, my question is at 4:18 why can't you just push the white pawn up at that point and get a queen? Cause then the black rook takes the white bishop, but then you fork the king and black bishop at c2, causing you to win the black bishop, which makes an easy fight against the remaining black rook. What am I missing here?

My thought was that the pawn promotion was actually a trap and the dark squared White Bishop that at first seems deader than a bacon double cheeseburger was gonna' be the deciding hero of the game. I was thinking Bg3 and protect, not promote, the Pawn forever, thus keeping an otherwise dead-looking Bishop in the game. The King can only threaten at most two potential Bishop squares, while the Rook can only threaten one per diagonal (and only one diagonal matters) and Black's opposite color Bishop can threaten a grand total of zero, while the White Bishop has five squares to move to that still protect the white Pawn. No way that rodeo ever catches the defending Bishop to finally allow a clean Rook take, and you run the game to fifty moves. If the King ever gets attacked, get to a dark square and stay on dark squares forever. When tackling the puzzle on a meta level, I thought the gimmick that won it an award was that it was designed to run to indefinite moves and that there was no way for Black to stop that from happening in spite of the seemingly insurmountable material advantage. ...Turns out I _was_ supposed to see the Bishop as dead and worthless and try to sacrifice it off. Eh, can't blame an 800 for trying.

Always is a draw when you have some extra pieces to defend yourself as a pawn and a bishop... How can they chack mate you 8f is not a clear line for check?! You always can hide behind your pieces, then 50 moves will pass and would be draw. It's so simple. In that situation only a queen can pull out a mat.

you seem to know very little about endgames, if White didn't have this special trick up his sleeve it would be an easy win for black, checkmating the white king either before or after taking the pawn.

Your pawn would be protected but can never promote, and what is worse your king is kinda shut off from the action with opponnent bishop and own bishop taking the square. So at one point black king will be on c8, black rook can then move from c to d and threaten your d8 bishop, the king cannot protect it with the black bishop on d7 and zugzwang, the pawn will be lost, and black will win the theoritical R+B vs B.
