This broke my motorcycle. INSANE road conditions. |S7E49|
In part 2 of the insane mud of Liberia, I get my bike back and realize that my clutch plates are burnt. I still have to do a lot more mud riding, and then another 500 kilometers to reach Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire, where I should be able to get repairs done. But with a destroyed clutch, I'm not getting very far..

As a Nigerian I know how terrible Nigerian roads are but when I see a major highway in Liberia carrying Consumer goods for just the basic physiological needs of Liberians with women and children spending months to get food and medicines is disheartening where a legit government is functioning. This significant journey has provided us with a deeper understanding of the real challenges faced by the people of Liberia and Let us collectively call upon President Joseph Boakai of Liberia to address these issues promptly, wipe away the tears of his people, bring happiness, and undertake the construction of this road without delay.

Heh... you got that right... this story has the antagonist (the environment and economy) and the unwitting protagonist, who makes boneheaded decisions, (like letting some kid jump on her bike and leave her behind while he fries her clutch)... this reads like an idiotic Netflix series. I love Noraly's tough, balls-out, no-fear approach, and she often calls the balls and reroutes logically... That said, you NEVER EVER EVER LET SOMEONE PILOT YOUR MACHINE FOR YOU... YOU FIND ANOTHER WAY... whether that means totally backtracking and finding another route -even if that means skipping a whole country- or you take it slow... not necessarily down the middle of the road when you could zigzag or take the edge where the plants are rooted... hell... anything but what happened... Lawrence is a good kid. BUT, he might not have been. AND, he just plowed right in and dogged that poor engine relentlessly... and 'monday morning quarterbacking' aside... you just don't do that. AND... Noraly knows when to let Alaska rest and cool down... The kid didn't. The good news? when he was an 1/8 of a mile out front of her, he didn't just take off and keep the bike.

Your clutch may not be fully worn out (it might). The cable was adjusted for the thickness of the friction plates as they were. As they wear you need to slacken the cable. Usually it’s a gradual process but obviously you lost a lot of material in a short time. Not slackening the cable will cause regular slip which will increase the wear rate on what’s left. Hope you have enough friction material left for this to work.

Trained mechanic here - yes, re-adjusting the clutch cable so it has about 20 mm of slack at the tip of the lever would be the place to start if you can't adjust the clutch release because you don't have tools or there isn't a clutch release mechanism adjuster on your bike. Next is the actual clutch release adjuster, again, if there is one. That would be a screw and locknut on the side of the engine and is usually under one of the engine side covers. But if that doesn't do it, the plates are simply worn beyond the serviceable limit. When that happens, the way to stretch out the miles before it wears to where it won't move (i.e. stranded), stay in the lower gears and back of the throttle and shift to a lower gear as soon as you hear the RPM's go up with no increase in road speed. If you see an uphill ahead, gently gain as much speed / momentum as possible before you start climbing and use the throttle sparingly as you coast up the hill, shifting to lower gears as you climb and the bike slows down. It also helps to use your legs to get the bike moving from a stop before engaging the clutch, as the clutch will last longer if it doesn't have to get the bike moving from a standstill.
Noraly is one calm, tough, & determined woman! Be safe!!!

Wow..breathtaking episode....just wow
That was intense. Lawrence is a legend. Hope he sees this comment and knows that I'm hugely impressed with his riding skills.
Lawrence is an absolute legend. Even Noraly acknowledge that this guy is an absolute hero, anyway that was one hell of an adventure.
Absolutely amazing to witnessed this experience. Please I wish someone can see and. Sponsor he's education and help he's community. This was absolutely fantastic work and so amazing to see. Noraley you have a heart of gold. I'm lovingly your personality. So patient and a strong individual you are. Take care and hope we can do something for that fish community too. Well done 👍💯😘🙏 I'm so proud of you and those boys that helped you out.
I feel sad that you go through so much trouble hardship and danger be safe I will watch you again when my heart feels stronger
As a temp fix, you could get someone to sand the glass off the clutch plates and rough up the pressure plates. Not a good solution, but better than being stranded. Take care not to take too much off or you'll have to shim the springs. You can just lay the bike down with clutch side up, open it up and do the work. Don't let any dirt or dust inside.

People in Africa are very tolerant and so kind!
Hi Noraley, I know I don't need to say this but Lawrence was an absolute legend. I've been riding motorbikes for over forty years including dirt, enduro, road and adventure bikes. In my opinion I believe Lawrence did an outstanding job, and got you through where most people would simply fail. I do not believe he abused Alaska at any stage in the footage I saw. If we could know who he was I would send him some money. What a beautiful person.

@@orbsphere- yes he handled it well and feathering the clutch in those conditions is absolutely necessary. I'm actually surprised it didn't burn sooner. It's why I always carry a spare clutch pack. That was some brilliant riding in atrocious conditions. She's a great rider. He was a master of that particular terrain. I did wonder that I didn't see an attempt to adjust the freeplay but that may have been edited out. I hope to see it running well soon. Ride on

@@lb10445Nah power definitely isn't the issue. All that would do is dig you deeper into the mud. It's a fairly heavy bike already plus loaded down with a lot of luggage. The normal CRF300L with no luggage would have gone through much easier.

Hopefully clutch will be ok after being allowed to cool and a bit of adjustment. Not sure if it’s hydraulic on the CRF300. Got to use the low down torque of modern bikes to get you out of trouble. Methinks the Himalayan may have been better suited to this terrain, although a much heavier bike.

The quality of this video is unsurpassed. You are a master at what you do and your loyalty to your fans is obvious. Wow, what a challenging day. This is certainly a record in your travels. I appreciate you taking us along and sharing the adventure. By the way, I think you made excellent decisions at every step, no mistakes. Hopefully you can make it to a town that has mechanics who can help. Huge thanks to everyone who helped you along the way. Special thanks to Lawrence.

Very well stated. There's Noraly going through tremendous hardship and there she is still filming so she can edit and make outstanding videos. Agree 100% she makes excellent decisions throughout and for you to say that, I'll guess you have enough wisdom to understand everything she is dealing with mentally being solo in a 3rd or 4th world country outside of what is seen on video. Being in a situation as we saw, our ability to keep a clear head is significantly reduced. I have to laugh at the armchair adventure riders who second guess her in the comments. Peace! Again, great words
Brutal on Alaska, and on Noraly's travels... but extremely informative into what life is truly like for Liberians.

Lawrence! Thumbs up man. Thank you for supporting Noraly.
Normally - and I forgot to mention. You should check the free play in the clutch cable. As the clutch plates wear the free play will be reduced - and if there is none the clutch will slip. So if this is the case use the adjuster(s) to make at least 3mm of free play at the lever, If you cannot get new clutch plates you might see if yo8 can find a mechanic who can pull the clutch plates outs- they will probably be glazed. You can deglaze the steel plates with wire wool or emory cloth, but be very gentle with the friction plates - use fine sandpaper, careful;ly. This ought to get you going again until you can get new plates - and if you are very lucky you could even think about replacing some of the friction inserts with ones from a different motorcycle, but they would have to be larger so you could cut them down to fit. More Good Luck wishes.

Mud is always frustrating. Especially covered dips with water. This was real success to even able to get out of it. But unlucky mechanic shops are rare. And even 4x4 offroad vehicles can get stuck often. So only cable wrench in front and around the tree can help.

Speaking as a retired mechanic, and owner of numerous dirt and street bikes (Im 72yrs young), I have chosen to NEVER own a water cooled motorcycle! To many things to go wrong, to much complexity. Simple is always better! Kudos to Noraly and all the people that helped her.

Air cooled is fine on good tracks but a disaster when you aren't moving fast in sand or mud as the engine gets no cooling. I've destroyed one trail bike engine riding in sand because of overheating but never had a problem with (many) water cooled bikes.
This is the toughest stretch yet. This is the most stressed I've seen Noraly and she still handles it like a champion.
I'm sitting in the comfort of my living room with my adrenaline through the roof. You are remarkable. The young man with you was in the right place at the right time. I'm so chicken that I probably would have stayed eoth him to fix my motorcycle. But you had the bravery to move on. Amazing!
A big thanks to this kind hearted young man Lawrence for helping you on this treacherous stretch. But credit goes to you Noraly to have the courage and grit to even think of embarking on such a journey. Safe riding on your journeys.
I used to race off road for a number of years and been in a lot of difficult terrain and conditions, but I have NEVER been in conditions as bad as the conditions in today's video. Amazing that the Honda clutch, which is generally considered robust, was able to last as long as it did in that mud. Hopefully, once the clutch plates thoroughly cooled you were able to limp into a repair shop.
