_MILD spoilers:_ 16:34 I'm glad that you mentioned this part of the band's dynamic. One of my favorite parts about this show is how Bocchi's little anxiety episodes aren't a one-note gag where the group has the same confused reaction every time. Instead they start to get used to it, which not only makes it feel like SO much more of a real friendship that's developing in real time in front of you, but it also makes the comedy even funnier. Episode 4- Bocchi starts glitching out on the ground, everyone is shocked and confused. Episode 9- Bocchi literally pops like a balloon, Ijichi says "Oh no, Bocchi-chan exploded!" and then proceeds to carry her friend, now a literal slab of deflated rubber, away to safety.

I think this is the key that keeps the show from becoming hurtful. No one ever makes fun of or ridicules Bocchi's experiences. The animation quality decreasing and the style changing every time Bocchi freaks out is a joke they've done so many times and yet somehow always makes me laugh my ass off. In the recent episode the low-poly 3D Bocchi T-posing through a stack of cubes made me pause so I can get my laughter done before I resumed. You know what's the best part about that gag? Of all things, it's a reference to Undertale. But not the video game itself, it references a one-off meme in that game's trailer. The fact that Bocchi the Rock's animation somehow managed to blow all of the other contenders for Best Animation out of the water in a year where its biggest competitors are juggernauts like Kaguya-sama, Chainsaw Man, and Mob Psycho 100 is absolutely insane to me. I love all of those series, yet none of them have the same visual punch as Bocchi. They're all incredibly well-polished, but Bocchi's presentation is just so unique and creative, that it's unlike anything I've ever seen in anime before. The closest comparison I can think of is the mixed-media production of Gumball.

I found Bocchi immediately relatable the moment she hit her head against the floor and screamed "Begone bad memories!" because lord do I still get embarrassing flashbacks, particularly of the elementary/high-school variety, a few times a month if I'm lucky. And I did get a case of the shaking nerves when I had to do a company tour for a new coworker, so I'm never doing that (or a presentation) ever again. And yet I also found myself manically chatty with a college friend a few weeks ago so I'm shockingly like Kita at rare instances - the unintentionally upbeat people-pleaser when paired with a Bocchi, the opposing poles to my absurd socially anxious-socially overly-comfortable self. In short, I get this show way more than I anticipated and I'm grateful for it.

Oh lol, that's one hell of a fun fact I didn't know. Wonderful naming xD

  • @chaosof99
    @chaosof99 Жыл бұрын

Fun fact: Masafumi Gotoh, lead singer and guitarist of Asian Kung-Fu Generation, goes by the name "Gotch" for his solo projects, but due to japanese spelling "ゴッチ" can also be read as "Gocchi". His biography is called "Gotch Go Rock". I can only conclude that this and the phrase "Hitoribocchi" combined to build the idea for this series. Kikuri Hiroi is named for Margaret Hiroi, lead singer and bassist of 88Kasyo Junrei. Her bandmates in "Sick Hack" (apparently a pun on "shiku hakku" or "all manners of torment") also share their names with those of 88Kasyo. The members of another band in the manga are named after the members of Kinniku Shojo Tai. In the manga there are also lots of reference to a ton of other bands and specifically music videos of theirs, as most title illustrations are directly taken from those videos but the characters from the manga replacing the original artists. A lot of known J-rock artists have directly contributed to the anime and the music of Kessoku Band. The first ending song "Distortion" was written by Maguro Taniguchi from Kana-Boon. The second ED "Karakara" is by Ikkyu Nakajima from Tricot, and the Third ED "Nani ga Warui" was written by Yuuho Kitazawa from The Peggies. The only negative I can say about this is that it makes Kessoku Band sound almost too good for this young a band and one that canonically has difficulty playing well together due to the social anxiety of its lead guitarist, but I guess that is the disconnect between making the show marketable and staying 100% true to the story. You can also definitely hear the style of the artist that wrote them out of those songs, making Kessoku Band sound a bit unfocused.

Thanks for all the references, that's cool to know. I disagree with the last bit though, they never have difficulty playing specifically because of Bocchi... The first time they play they're missing second guitar and a singer and they've literally just met, of course it'll be messy; in their live concert they were all over the place because both Kita and Nijika were off tempo, and it was actually Bocchi wanting her "fans" to have a good time that kicked them into gear when she just improvised her solo intro to That Band. True, their two songs so far and the ED songs give off really different vibes (they're probably going to make it work by saying Nijika and Kita wrote those while Bocchi wrote the two songs they've been playing so far) and they do sound too good for what they _should_ be, but I still think it's done well enough to be _possible._

Actually, sounding cometely unfocussed makes a lot of sense starting out. Especially when someone like Ryou writes your songs, I might even expect that to be a much larger issue xD (definitely not projecting onto her) She's also probably been writing for years without releasing anything, so I'd say it makes sense that she's pretty competent. Bring able to reproduce other writers styles though, is almost completely impossible unless you rely on cliches or sirectly copy ideas, so that doesn't quite make sense, but, as you said, from a production standpoint that really makes a lot of sense anyways.

Probably my Anime of the Year, not just because Bocchi is relatable, but because 'loner gets friends and grows and matures steadily as a person' is one of my absolute favorite kinds of stories to watch. If BTR was just about making fun of Hitori, it'd be a pretty mean show, but it lets her get some wins, and shows she has particular strengths. When she's dragged outside of her comfort zone, she frequently manages to rise to the occasion, and it's downright inspiring. Especially the performance at Starry during the storm, after the band has had a pretty lackluster performance, she absolute jams, pulling them all out of a funk and turning things around. For all the funny Bocchi Time moments that make the show a joy to watch, it's that moment, and then her conversation with Nijika at the end of the episode that show the beating heart of the series. The only other anime this year to give me such profound feelings was Call of the Night, which should also be in the conversation for Anime of the Year, easily.

The music is really well designed too. The performances are definitely animated off of reference and they do a great job making it feel natural and loose. In addition, the production of the music is well thought out during their second concert because you can hear them play poorly, and Bocchi’s solo during That Band is really similar to her street performance, which shows she’s been working on it for a while

I love the way Kita's strumming and Nijika's drumming are animated. Kita in particular strums her guitar in a stiff and exaggerated manner, like a person who hasn't completely mastered the guitar would. While Ryo and Bocchi play more precisely and don't make any unnecessary movements. Not to mention Bocchi's posture and precision change notably, both in animation and in sound, when she gets in the zone.

I had a different interpretation of the characters' personalities. Introversion and extroversion aren't about how you act, they're more about whether you find being around people energizing or depleting. I see Bocchi as wanting to be around people, but her anxiety and depression get in the way. Extroverts also enjoy having lots of friendships, while introverts enjoy having deeper relationships with a few friends. I absolutely love the scene where Bocchi asks Ryo to review her lyrics. Bocchi writes in a way showing she wants to make everyone happy and be accessible to everyone. But Ryo gently coaches her to write lyrics that few people will appreciate but will resonate deeply with them. And that's because Ryo really leans into being an introvert. Bocchi is an extrovert who behaves like an introvert, but secretly she's an attention whore tsuchinoko kaiju. I suspect that, despite being a genki girl, Nijika is more of an introvert. She seems more interested in her bandmates than anyone in the audience, and she and Ryo are tied at the hip.

I agree with your definition of introvert/extrovert, but I am pretty sure sure Bocchi is an introvert. Just look at how she was exhausted after her concert (the second one, if I'm not mistaken, where she literally lost her color). Yes, she wants to hang out with her friends and be on stage, but they are her close friends, which checked the deeper relationships box, and music is her passion in which she can express herself. Bocchi needs (or at least seems to) her alone time when she's at home and is not disturb by it when shes in her closets writing lyric alone for exemple, she have a thriving head space, and is more creative on her own than would be an extrovert in the same conditions. She also has a good observation skill that many introverts have. One last note about introversion is that when not coupled with social anxiety, an introvert in the right setting may appear the most extroverted person we know without even realizing it. Especially if this is about a passion, many introverts can take the stage or take the spotlight for a time. Thanks for the read, and if you may, can you explain your point on extroverted Bocchi? I would like to see the other side of the 9 and see the 6 that you are seeing :) May you also pass great holidays if that's the case !

My impression is that Bocchi actually is an introvert, but she's trying to act like an extrovert because she's been conditioned by society to believe that that's what all the people around her want her to be. She claims to want fame and lots of shallow friendships because she mistakenly thinks that that will make her "acceptable" to the people around her, because she's somehow gotten the impression that having lots of friends is the default behavior of humanity, and the polite indifference of her classmates is clearly a sign that they despise her. Bocchi doesn't actually have any problem with her Bocchi-ness herself; her problem with it is simply that she believes other people dislike her for it. Episode 9 is a good example of this: Bocchi became increasingly depressed and unbalanced as the summer progressed, _not_ because she really wanted to hang out with her friends specifically, but because she wanted reassurance that her friends like and value her. When they did ultimately hang out, Bocchi had her fill of the experience after just one snack; basically everything else they did that day only tired her out. If she actually had the sort of lifestyle she claims she'd like to have, I'm reasonably convinced that she'd be miserable, stressed, and completely burnt out within the first day. Bocchi isn't an extrovert. She just thinks that _not_ being an extrovert makes her an abnormal freak, and she wants to be what she assumes is "normal" for reasons that have nothing to do with how her battery gets recharged. If, theoretically, she could find some way to be "acceptable" to society at large, without needing to socialize extensively, she would see that as an ideal solution and jump at the prospect of it. And in fact, she already has: That's literally the reason why she learned the guitar in the first place.

My depression has hospitalized me twice, I am introverted, and I am on the autism spectrum (making my introversion nearly as bad as Bocchi's). Watching this anime made me feel seen. Like someone had specifically made this for me and only me. I can relate to the musical side of it (self-taught guitarist and bassist), I can relate to the introverted side, and (most importantly for me) I can relate to the depression/lonely side. This whole year feels like its just had so many bangers. Bocchi has been probably my favorite right up there with Lycoris Recoil just for having such a great sense of internal tone the uses its characters to build its story without being terribly concerned about the story even when it is well written. Bocchi just has so much stylistic fun and a near perfect balance of main and supporting characters that I just constantly find myself coming back to see where they land next and to see Hitori on her path which subtle though it might be has been on the road up.

Bocchi the Rock has to be my favorite anime in a while. As someone with crippling anxiety who prefers to deal with it through comedy, it feels nice to have a show deal with those struggles that way. It even feels relatable in the sense of when push comes to shove, instinct kicking in past those fears. Something I don't really see often in media, but is a survival instinct I deal with often. [Such as when I answer the door and find a stranger there rather than a family member I was expecting, so my brain checks out and I discover later that I talked to the person politely and eloquently. But boy was I not there for the conversation and didn't retain any of it.]

This anime feels like such a breath of fresh air with it's anime-ly exaggerated but still fundamentally realistic representation of anxiety and loneliness, especially when we think for a moment how frustratingly absurdly anime usually tackles this topic (yes, looking at you watamote or komi-san). Whomever I've talked to about the show, they've all said that it resonates with them, even the most extroverted, outgoing types. And that kinda feels like the key. One doesn't have to have crippling social anxiety to sort of relate to Bocchi. Only the most egotistical weirdo wouldn't go through multiple stages throughout their lives where they feel excessively anxious or doubt themselves. Her thought patters, logical pitfalls, ways of coping, to a varying extent and severity but we've all experienced them. Simply just the higher someone's on the spectrum of overthinking and anxiety, the stronger her character is poking their nerves. Writing a character that represents this side of us so realistically and relatably is one hell of a tall order.

Boochi is a fantastic anime (though it's hard to watch sometimes due to vicarious embarrassment). Her mental breakdowns are basically ripped right out of my middle school and high school life. Hell, I even brought my guitar to school one day, hoping it would work as an ice breaker. I did eventually break out of my shell during the last year and a half of high school, and these days, my social anxiety is completely gone. I still get the odd panic attack now and again, but I've learned to arrest them almost immediately. I still play music; last year of high school, I played the talent show as a solo act and killed it. For anyone who is still in it, there will be a point where you will realize that the people who seemed very self-assured during high school (and in general) were just as anxious as you were. Hell, I pity most of the guys who used to bully me, almost all of them went nowhere in life. Meanwhile, I own my own business and lived in Japan for almost 10 years.

I don't really see Nijika as an extroverted type. She isn't shown to hang out other than with the band, in the summer she mostly stays at home and the bar, and at the celebration she went out for some time alone. She's is as social as she is in the band because she is trying to bring everyone together and that what makes me personally resonate the most with her character

Bocchi The Rock is the most accurate portrayal of social anxiety I have ever seen in my life. As someone who deals with it and also, paradoxically, craves having An Audience and being popular, I've absolutely never felt so seen. It's "she's just like me fr" the anime, I mean god I have literally done the "bring my cool thing with me somewhere and hope people will talk to me about it so I can make friends" play SO MANY TIMES. And Bocchi giving herself a pep talk on Being Normal before entering a resturant, you could have yanked that monologue right out of my head. This anime is so special, not just Bocchi's anxiety but the music and the animation and EVERYTHING, I am so glad I watched it and I'm so happy to see it getting the love it deserves.

When Nijika said "This Bocchi Time lasted the entire commercial break" in one of the episodes, it took me a while to realize the fade to black a few seconds prior was literally when the show went into a commercial break when airing.

When I saw Bocchi The Rock's trailers ahead of it airing I expected it to be decent, was hopeful it might be great even. What I absolutely never would've expected was a legitimate Anime of the Year contender that gets me out of bed in the morning as excitedly as personal favorites like Lycoris Recoil and Gundam Witch. And in a year with such standouts as Spy x Family, Lycoris, Made in Abyss S2, and Kaguya S3. Maybe it's recency bias talking but I think I'd put it as the best new anime of the year, though I REALLY struggle to decide if it beats out Lycoris or not. Edit: Also the other band members getting on Bocchi's wavelength enough to start playing into the cutin gags is one of my favorite parts of the whole show. And Nijika calling her out of it as she sensed it starting once. It's both hilarious and illustrates how they gradually grow closer and understand one another better.

I ended up adding Bocchi the Rock to my itinerary initially because the synopsis interested me. After some good belly laughs and a lot of middle/high school relating, it’s become one of my favorites. Also, wasn’t expecting for it to blow up in popularity according to my Twitter TL. I’m very happy for Bocchi and the band! I quite enjoy certain musical anime. Finally, props to the amazing way they animate Bocchi when she bugs out 😂 it adds to the zaniness

I was looking forward to an MB review of Bocchi, and I was very pleased to see your take. I unabashedly love it, and I'm happy to see so many other fans (and pros like yourself) praising its shiny anxiety-ridden goodness. I also love the observation about the character's hair design indicating their social tendencies. Extremely perceptive of you, and kudos for explaining/illustrating it so clearly!

Loved the way how you exemplified yourself just how relatable Bocchi can get in your own narration. Also, thanks for pointing out in 20:12 how the anime did something similar by basically spelling out how they were presenting Bocchi's issues in a comedic way without breaking the fourth wall. Excellent catch.

Yeah, I shouldn’t be surprised how much love Bocchi has been getting online, given that online is the place where people with social anxiety (etc.) can thrive-if anywhere-but it is gratifying to a surprising degree. I’d read the manga a couple of years ago, getting maybe a kind of more low key Slow Start (q.v.) kind of vibe from it. As soon as it was announced, very minimally, that it was getting an anime adaptation, I was unreasonably excited, although at there same time so little about it was trickling out that I doubted a) the likely quality, and b) that it might happen at all. It turns out that, coincidence or not, my excitement turned out not to be unreasonable. I watch a lot of anime (almost all sol) but this is the one that I leave till the end because it’s so good. And so unlike anything else, if it does seem to have a smudgy intersection with a Venn diagram that also has Nichijou and 3-gatsu no Lion (and maybe a hint of Blue Period too). Or if the amazing Ping Pong, The Anime was a comedy, or if the visual style of If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan got a bit more like Eizouken or Flip-Flappers. I’m starting to become incoherent, so I’ll stop. But, well, thanks for your always welcome perspective: the hair symbolism was new to me, and just deepens my growing sense of how much anime (and manga) in general is absolutely stuffed with symbolism. And I’ve been no stranger to ‘Bocchi-time’ myself, if truth be told.
