A even R9 270x or GTX 660ti type of graphics card will let you play at least at high settings above 30fps: Hard West, XCOM2, GTA V, Wasteland 2, Tides of Numenera, Disco Elysium, STALKER games, Starcraft II HotS, Wasteland 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Dying Light, E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy, Endless Space 2, Stardrive 2, Crusader Kings II, EU IV, Planescape, KOTOR II, VTMB, Homeworld Deserts of Kharak and Homeworld 2 remake, Outlast 2, Pathologic, Satellite Reign, Tropico 6 (and every other Tropico game), Cities Skylines, Fortnite, Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes 2, The Division, Battletech, Call of Cthulhu, Dishonored series, Endzone a World Apart, maybe Farcry 5 (and anything less recent), Darkest Dungeon, SOMA, >Observer, F.E.A.R. 2, Amid Evil, Dusk, Seven, Grim Dawn, Gris, Journey, Thea 2, WH40k Mechanicus, Little Nightmares, Magic the Gathering Arena, Mafia, No Man's Sky, Stygian, STASIS, This War of Mine, CSGO, Sunless Sky, Opum Magnus, Cliff Empire, Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2, Atom RPG, Cliff Empire, Cultist Simulator, South Park, Darkwood, Alien Isolation, Eurotruck Simulator 2, Galactic Civilization III, Metro 2033, Deadspace 2, Fallout New Vegas, Tyranny, Dungeons 2, Doom (2016), Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Kerbal Space Program, Elite: Dangerous, and basically pretty much any game Ssethtzeentach, Mandalore, and Grimbeard talks about among many others. So yeah go ahead and tell me you can't find good games to play on cheap old hardware))) That's to say, it may not run the newest games but older games don't keep requiring better and better hardware to play at 1080p, and, that's to say, there's some not only GREAT titles out there but also you can literally game a bunch of those at 1080p on even a R9 380 or GTX 780 on ultra settings provided it's got the API support and doesn't run out of VRAM (this makes nVidia sucks at this, bad Vulkan support and limited VRAM makes their cards worth much less than used Radeon cards) so, so long it doesn't require 4gb+ of VRAM and it doesn't require DirectX 12, and doesn't matter to you gaming at 1080p, you can play pretty much anything on $100 graphics cards so long it's not Cyberpunk or Red Dead Redemption 2 or something. Linus did a great video about this too, where some of them age really badly more from bad API/driver support. But, even then I can liteally play The Witcher 3 at 1080p with a GTX 660ti at medium or high settings and get playable fps, so who give a fuck. Or, a used gaming laptop with an old GTX 970m, or a Radeon 270x, or if you have R9 380x or 980ti or RX 470, you can play at even higher settings and higher framerate. This is what the corpos doesn't want you knowing about: you don't actually need to have the highest end or even new hardware at all to have a really great time playing great games.
i ain't gaming, but this guide inspired me to find such a great deal over at a local used hardware shop where they had an already-built system for 230 USD with - b450 steel legend motherboard - ryzen 5 3600 - rx 590 - 650 watt power supply - 16GB DDR4 single channel memory (I know what you guys want to say, but I'm happy for this config for upgradability) and I'm stoked to have my first 'custom-made pc' (made by someone else) that I use for software dev and some light ML tasks.

Nice! Congrats. Yeah I'd say older GPUs going 3-5 generations back is really great for 1080p, only TDP become an issue when you find really inefficient 980ti and have to reconsider PSU setup like on reusing the dangerbox on an XPS or Optiplex to power everything with 460w, otherwise 980ti/1070 for $100 is where the market is at now and it can well play almost anything you throw at it. 4k RT is memes. Costly memes, made out of caviar and gold toilet seats. For normal people a really fantastic gaming laptop or desktop rig can be had for $300-400 using used parts. If my laptop can play Witcher 3 at least at 40fps on high settings I am happy with it)

I love linus's energy, however I can't help but get annoyed every time they make this kind of video. Whoever they have in charge of buying these parts as if they are the best deals isn't very good or aware of the best products for the price. Like saying your only storage options at the $55 price range is the P2 or SN570 or even worse an HDD... When you can get an XPG SX8200 Pro for the exact same price which has a DRAM cache and MUCH faster writes. Or for $5 more you could get a WD Black SN770 which would blow all of those options out of the water.. GPU is preference but I would rather get a 1080 over a 2060 as it gives more raw performance and more vram for the exact same price used. @@Nagol93 A large part of him sucking at games is probably he sucking at playing and trying to follow a script/talk to an audience at the same time. Watching something like a GDQ (which has honestly felt a bit weak in recent years) some speed runners can talk and play impressively well at the same time while others will have a team of people that have at least some knowledge of the game to explain things. Even with a team they rarely do their best while playing at an event because it's harder to focus.
We need more PC build
That thing seems like it would catch on 🔥
You nailed it! Just a few days ago told my "still waiting" friends to check ebay for last gen GPUs. Models other than the 2080ti. FPS/$ have gone wild there. Budget class of the current gen was the only one that made some sense to buy so short before release of the next gen. Because it's usually delayed. Right now last gen pricing is kind of killing that budget class too.
I still think you should avoid that case. With literally any cheap mesh front case you can upgrade without the PC bursting into flames. Otherwise, the 10$ case winds up in a landfill or something, or in your closet for eons, or piled up at a recycling center.

Just ordered my dad some parts for a pretty baller sleeper rig based on some of these recommendations. Thanks, Linus and co, you genuinely helped me save some money on a project.
This might have to be my starter pc
Oh excellent! Used that case for my first media server. lots of dremelling to make it breathable. Was able to get three drives in there, with room for one more. Ended up replacing with a case (and board) that natively supported 10 drives, with lots of ventilation. Fractal Node, natively has 6 slots for 3.5" drive support, but with room around the other half of the case for two more.
Finally we can have our tech creators again making truly budget builds and watch them make the right choices for that budget

Seems like a dream... A SETUP with 2060! .. DAMN!
I was streaming over 2 years ago on a $500 rig so I mean it was completely possible. Did it with an RX 580 and it looked really good. I upgraded to a 3070 last week, but been using the other that whole time and it's a single computer setup.
It makes me happy to see budget builds. Sometimes it seems like tech channels focus on the high end stuff too much. Don't get me wrong, if I had that kinda money floating around, I would build a high end PC. However, most people don't have that kinda of money. They have kids and other responsibilities.

Reminds me of my first PC build in college. Budget was $350, included an i3, used GTX 760, a 500GB HDD, and 8GB of basic af RAM. This was 2014.
This case needs more credit it's been around for at least 5 years my two homelab servers run quiet and cool with that 80mm exhaust and they actually don't get filthy in my garage running true as core and Ubuntu server
On my first build, i screwed up the pins in mobo connection to usb 3.0 for the case but i managed to bend them back into shape and they work

It's a rewarding experience. If you haven't already get yourself a anti static wrist strap and mat to protect components. At least use the strap or just keep grabbing the case prior to inserting your hands and components in there. If you make a check list of each step you completed it makes it easier to troubleshoot shoot in case system does not boot on first try. Whatever you do keep your fingers away from any exposed pins of device add-on cards. The oils from us dirty humans can give problems for proper connections. Have fun! 😁

Super enjoy your channel LMG. I know your team are gaming and work flow focused, but I was curious if you'd ever thought about doing a video on a good entry level build for someone who's primary tasks are photo editing and processing? I would definitely spend the extra couple of dollars and get a case that has actual airflow holes. You might even find one with a filter if you're lucky.
4:58 "For as little as ten bucks on eBay"... of course that excludes shipping costs. Found the listing in question and despite it only being 170 miles from my front door, the listed shipping was $19.30... if I happened to be on the other side of the country, the shipping cost was $73.10! So, sure, if you can find one that happens to be close enough to you to where you can just pick it up (and the seller is OK with that, some aren't), then sure, $10. Otherwise it was more like $29-83 for a used case. For comparison, brand new on newegg the case is $45 including shipping.
That board is a life saver mannnn🎉
linus nailed it with that hammer
I just had fun seeing this was possible again. I spent WAAAAY too much for my 3090 because of that darned newegg shuffle. Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!
