Yeah it's kind of like minmaxing your PC build. I mean player character. You've only got so high a level cap and stat points you can spend so how to make the cheapest, cheesiest, most OP character possible with what little you got. I think they've done something like that before, but it'd be neat to see an updated list post-pandemic shortages. Having that "if you can spend just a bit more, here's where you should do it" is useful to have when you don't know a ton about the tech landscape.

I think doing 2nd hand build with average priced 2nd hand components would be more fair. You can find great deals if you're willing to wait half a year for the best 2nd hand GPU but if you want to make it easy and fast, you have to pay more for the components in 2nd hand market, too.

@@MikkoRantalainen I mean...I just built a Ryzen 7 5800X ($175 second-hand) with a 2080S ($260 second-hand), Fractal Design case $(60 second-hand), Strix B550 Wifi ($80 second-hand) and 32GB of 4000mhz DDR4 ($40 second-hand) for like, $600...The second-hand market is literally all over the place, dependent on where you live at. I find it pretty doubtful that you could get a comparable 4k DLSS ray-tracing rig for a similar price in many places lol

@Mikko Rantalainen Well, it's really weird here. You have people selling rigs with i7 4770k and GT730 for $800 and then people selling PCs with Ryzen 7 3800X and 1080ti for $500... Arkansas is a weird place.

You basically built my PC. Only differences are the CPU i3-12100f, Case I got the Zalman S2 and a 16 gig dual channel 3200 Ram. I feel very good now about my build thank you LTT.

T-force has the xtreem at 46$ for 2x8 SR b-die on newegg. Definitely worth it. They're also A2 PCBs and my mobo liked them much better than the 4000c15 gskill "bin" that I tried before. I'm able to run lower latency for sure. This the just the 3200c14 blue version btw

true or even switching back to a 12100f as the 13100f is nearly identical in performance to the 12100f and still saving around $10 which could’ve been put to the ram

I would've gotten the ryzen 5500 instead of the 13100f. its like $15 cheaper and has 6 cores and 12 threads. a quad core in 2023 as a brand new system is a huge NO for me and while you may not be on the latest gen, you still have plenty of upgrade room up to a 16 core 5950x which will still be more than enough in the future. If you got $500 exactly to spend then I'd say its worth saving up another $10-$20 if necessary for dual channel which is REALLY cheap these days, there a silicon power 16gb kit 3200mt/s for literally $30. $5 more than what Linus spent on that single 8gb stick, and you would end up spending even more upgrading to another stick later than buying both in one package. If you can't save up $5 more then maybe a pc shouldn't be your priority imo lol

Restrictions breed creativity! If grabbing a case out of the literal e-waste pile will save you some money I am all for it. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In that order of preference.

Just watched your stepping g down video and just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed your videos, glad to see you honoring your values

12100f is around 95% of the 13100fs performance but often 10-20 bucks cheaper, get that and 16Gb of ram!! Dual channel and 16 gigs is soooo worth it for multitasking and just overall snappiness of the system. (Especially when it’s 15$more!)

I don't always understand everything that goes on in every video, but I at least ALWAYS appreciate the production quality. And 1440p uploads are just icing on the cake for me. Thank you so much for your attention to detail and high quality standards.

PSA to anyone getting this case: I use this case in my Server PC with a GTX 1060 in it for video encoding, and I have issues with the GPU fan being extremely close to the PSU enclosure. I had to put a power cable under it so sometimes it ends up rattling against the fan and obviously damaging it slowly. Watch out for any weird noises the computer may make.

The lack of dual channel is literally the reason it's choking. It matters a lot on a budget. Literally countless articles about this since forever.

Even 32gb isn't that much more than 16 edit: also I really wish linus would test more hard to run games or games that are more ram intensive (when he builds budget pcs with low ram) because that would be a better test than games that can run on a potato

Exactly. Don't see how not going for 16GB in dual channel is a good idea. You can get them in DDR4 for less than £50 brand new. Hell, I seen them go for less than £40 a couple of times now. Worth getting it just right the first time so you don't have to worry in the future.

Yep its not the intel 4 core. Although it is utilized in a high percentage doesnt mean it is bottlenecking frames. Rocking the i3-12100 with RTX 3060Ti myself, and there is no bottleneck at all in 1440p

love the build and it's great to see what you can still get when you sort of "go back to basics." Regarding the CPU cooler thing. I am in full agreement with just using the cooler the cpu comes with. I could have done that with my Ryzen 3700. Only reason I changed was the fan size caused a tone that my hearing couldn't deal with. Changing the cooler just meant the fan was bigger, and ran at a slower speed/produced different tones that I was ok with hearing. I saw maybe a 1 or 2 degree decrease in cooling, but that was it.

Keep the builds coming. I'm a fiend for build videos of any price point just for the ideas.

I have this case (the purple one). Cable management using a non-modular psu is tricky, but doable. This case does come with mounting points for zip ties, which is good because you will use them all. You're going to want to get rid of the stock fans and replace them with anything really. The fans are quiet but are very low quality. The side panel window will scratch if you look at it too intently, so don't stare directly at it. The airflow is good. It's easy to clean.

exactly! had the white one and it impressed me for $25! Great airflow, and although it was tight, it was fairly easy to manage cables, even with a non mod psu like you mentioned. It will always have a place with me, even though it is no longer my favorite budget case. That award goes to the thermaltake versa h17. for $50 you get an incredible case. Psu shroud, plenty of cable room, plenty of drive space, great thermals, AND a full tempered glass panel! I'm just glad someone else enjoyed the diypc f2 though

I have a similar case for 3 years or so, called "Zalman Z1 Neo". It has 2 120mm front fans and one 120mm back fan, with front dust filter and bottom PSU filter. Great buy for about 40$, if you can get over the fact that the metal sheet is so thin, you could probably punch through it (don't do what Linus did pushing with his knees on the right side panel, you'd probably fall through). The case is exactly the same except the plastic front looks different. The rest is the same: front panel has one USB 3, two USB 2 and audio jack plugs, acrylic left side panel, bumped-out right panel for cable management, fans connect through molex (they're very quiet and didn't have any issue with them for almost 3 years of uptime). Case cooling is great, i'm happy with it and don't regret buying it over something pricier.

A lot of smaller brands do rebrands of cases like this. I had one for years called NOX Hummer MC, not the exact same but very similar. I loved it to be fair. Very simple and straightforward but with actually a lot of flexibility. Don't underestimate cheap cases. For the CPU power cable that he said there was no routing for it, there is, just like all cheap cases you are supposed to get it BEHIND the motherboard and have it come out of the big backplate hole behind the board. Yes you need to pass this cable before putting your motherboard in the case. But with some effort these cases can still get great cable management. My current case is the famous Corsair 5000D Airflow. 200€. Apart from the design and build quality, in terms of features to be honest I don't think it is much better than that NOX 30€ one. If you don't care about having a sleek high end looking case, just buy a 50-100€ case. That's the sweet spot for PC cases.

@@azenyr Same for the Zalman one i have, it has a cut corner to the top left where you can pass the CPU power connector through from the back panel side, but you have to do it before you mount the motherboard, otherwise it won't fit through. I changed my PSU recently and had to take out the mobo to fit it in.

I think you totaly could have gone for 16 gb if youd had chosen the 12100f, which is still totaly fine, and would also have eliviated possible problems with bios update.

i get that ltt wants to provide an uptodate system guide with new parts but youre an idiot if you build a system for 500 dollars and not buy stuff used, yes it comes with risk but modern parts dont tend to just sketch out after a while unless the ebay seller damaged it themselves a used part should last just as long as a new part

I think people apreciate the 500 category because everyone knows what the high end and high value components are, but you really need to dig and make the numbers to know what's the best value on such a small budget. It also creates a base line: "you should not be going lower or worst that this"

From gaming at simmilar specs for quite some time, my best upgrade was dual chanel 16GB of ram. It makes a huge difference in modern titles. I would love from you to try to test games that this PC struggles with so you can comment on which upgrade would be needed.

I love this. 'The stock cooler is fine'... 'The M-ATX standard hasn't changed, so feel free to scavenge a case'.. Yes. Just yes.

@@ExperimentIV Look for used cases , that look vintage , and paint it them beige and make it look "vintage" , for me who use 2001 , for new PC there are some limitations = airflow I literally have made two holes for fans in side of my panel ... , I plan to get GTX 1080ti 11gb for my PC and that gpu need good airflow , so I bought used coler master big tower 13.2kg case its huge , have big fans allover = will keep pc cold , in next few days I will "mod" that case = paint it mate black , and get rid of rgb fans and replace it with better ones withou rbg ... but if I would do stealth build I would go for old 486 case from 90", those are boxy beige = all you dreaming of :)

Rx 6600 is definitely a monster when it comes to value proposition, such a solid card

A good amount of people have bought them for the equivalent of 80-120USD on the used market at times here in Australia... That has to be a recordholder for frames per/$$$ that wasnt a complete fluke.

Been so busy with work, life, vacation that I haven't had time for Ltt in months. Budget build? I ALWAYS have time for those videos.

The thing that I like about LTT is that even though they have a budget and can always do expensive builds. They always make sure to include all their viewers in their builds.

I'm actually using the Ryzen 5 5600 in my rig and I bought it when the price bottomed out last year at just $100USD. This cpu is a great value for gaming with almost the same performance as its big brother the Ryzen 5 5600x.

Yeah that's a good choice. I was going to get the 5600 but didn't pull the trigger. Now I want the 7600 but it's not coming down in price. So who knows when I'll finally get around to upgrading. In the meantime I'm way behind on an i5-4670k.

I have 5600 with rtx 3080 on 4k monitor. I have no Issues with games, and I won't be upgrading for at least 3-5 years. 5600 is pretty good for its price.

@@notme222 I could have waited for the 7600 to upgrade but I don't like being an early adopter on a new platform. They had plenty of time to work the kinks out of the AM4 platform before I bought in. I don't mind being behind 1 generation if it means saving money and having less bugs. Hell I didn't switch to AM4 until my FX-8350 literally wouldn't be able to support Windows.

@@notme222 I pensioned my Xeon E3 1240v2 (i7 3770) for a 5600 because I knew the 7600 wouldn't come down in price at all, along with the ddr5 high cost while ddr4 was and still going down in price. Ended up spending about 380€ for good b550 mobo,cpu,16gb ram 3600 cl16,1tb nvme, cpu cooler while reusing my old (but gold) case and the rx 5600xt I picked up last year. Considering that I would had to spend almost twice for a similar but newer build, I'm more than happy spending those almost 400€+something else for a future gpu upgrade and move to 1440p .

Always love the building budget gaming pc series.

The 8 pin has a cut out behind the MOBO, (see massive square that is behind where the CPU is on the rear of the MOBO) - simply put the 8 pin through before you bolt in the MOBO. It then bends over the top of the MOBO.

Thanks Linus for keeping the budget builds alive.

It would be cool see if linus and team can try and do the $500 gaming pc in CAD, would be interesting what the differences between the builds would be.

The 6600 series are outstanding cards, particularly the XT. Crazy good frames for the money at 1080p and solid performance in 1440p too. Also, the driver suite is way better than team green in terms of UX right now. Not even close.

The thing about cases not changing is so true. I built my sleeper pc in a 23 year old case expecting to modify it and found that everything fit perfectly leaving me to just cut some hidden fan holes on the bottom and add taller legs for airflow.

0:27 really thought he was gonna say "like how we're gonna tell you about our sponsor!"

It made me really happy that I just built almost the exact same machine for myself and I needed it to be as cheap as I could get. I did end up going with a used 5700 XT that I found for $130. Honestly I'm shocked at how good the thing performs.

For my recent build for my first pc I just went with a 12100f and rx6500xt and it’s running amazing

This is super useful, here in Italy prices are slightly different so it actually goes higher than that but the idea is great, not only it's ok for gaming but let's you update it basically as much as you want!

please DONT buy the parts he did, buy a cheap b350 board that is compatible with ryzen 5000, get 16 gb of ram get a 5500 and spend the extra on getting an xt version, also if you are in europe or australia you probably will have to buy another psu.

I will reiterate, you can do things Linus can't in a professional video, so hunt around for deals. Open box, used whatever. I managed to build a 7700x/6750xt build for $750 (coincidence?). Microcenter always has great sales on if you're in the US.

I wonder if going with the 12100f with the 2nd 8 gig stick would be better than then 13100f with 1 8 gig stick. IIRC GN review of 13100f showed not much difference performance wise, where the 2nd ram stick might actually make up for it.

I blame the 8gb ram stick on bidenflation, basically the move implies that you'll upgrade it later (breaking the budget without 'breaking the budget'). I think a honest budget build would include mostly used parts but I can understand those that want everything new even if we all know a used build would be significantly faster.

That FPS lag is definitely due to the single stick of RAM. Dual Channel 16GB would clear most of the lag. Also 8GB for modern games will lower the 1% FPS to very poor numbers. Even more so when online play is involved. Nice build with the intel Chip.

After the great GPU shortage, it is so nice to see you can get a very capable card for just $200. Not to mention that the 6600XT is now only $200 at some places (Micro Center). I also think the Intel A750 might also be a worth a shot as well, also around $200.

i actually got an a750 for 160 from micro center (insane that that’s even possible now). while i can’t vouch for a 6600xt, the a750 has been performing really well for me, with minimal hiccups.

remember 1 thing arc a750 tdp is 225w while rx 6600 having just 125w so to chose Arc you have to upgrade your PSU also while RX 6600 Should work fine with 450W and 500W 80+ PSU's @@ljlk8583

My first build on my own: Core i3 7100 + 1050 Ti + 8Gb RAM. It was awesome, for real. Budget builds are super fun. ALSO: No one is going budget on PC and BONKERS on monitor... 1080p 60Hz/75Hz... Thats a GREAT gaming experience.

A 12100f and 16gb of ram would probably have been the better choice when the performance difference between the 13100 and 12100 is so minimal.

Same thing I was wondering. Almost no difference except a couple 100 mhz boost clock for 13100 over 12100. 16 gb ram would be much better, and sometimes it does improve gaming performance.

That's what I did in my build. Exactly the same as this but 12100F and 16GB. There are frequently apps or games that either require more than 8GB or need to be three only thing running with that little RAM. I tend to leave my browser open to keep what I was doing while gaming, and I still got warnings that my RAM was running out before I upgraded up 32GB when the same sticks I used were going cheap recently.

feels like there is more emphasis on pc builds again on the channel, like it. love seeing all types of build from budget to unobtainable :-)

Before I'm going to build a backup/randomcrap server for myself, I will definitely head to local recycling locations for some scraps. I used to work in a small recycling facility breaking down and repairing stuff that came in and there were some pretty good memory sticks, CPUs, coolers, power supplies, fans, cases, monitors/TVs etc, to salvage for cheap. Also got a decent amount of Windows 10 Pro keys that still worked so no need to spend extra on a new license. In those places people rarely know anything about computers so you can pretty much get anything by how much they weight instead of their real value.

@@kielbasamageDepends on the place. Most that I've gone to here in Finland allow people to walk in the office and ask if they happen to have whatever you're looking for. They usually just care about collecting the aluminum, copper and gold from computers so I don't see why they would care about few computer parts. Maybe check their website or call before showing up. 🤔

My first build in 2016, which also got me into this channel, was basically the period-appropriate version of this, except I sacrificed the dedicated graphic card for much more storage because basically the only game I played at the time was Minecraft.

I always love watching the vids with more budget friendly things. Seeing top of the line is cool, but sometimes it’s nice getting to watch stuff I can actually afford lol

It’s been a while since we got some old fashioned targeted build guides on LTT. Love it.

Every video i see using that case makes me love it more (it's my own personal case but green instead of orange)

DIYPC was my first case brand and I can honestly stand by it, Sure its not nzxt or anything but for my first build it was solid back almost a decade ago and I still have it for my 2nd pc.

You can never buy too big of a PC case and power supply. My 20 year old supertower of a PC case finally met its match and needed a replacement just to handle the modern CPU cooling and graphics cards. Those new AIO water cooling kits are real monsters

I have 3 ryzen 5500s deployed in my house (2 for the kids one for the media centre pc) and frankly those are pretty wild bang for the buck.

This, there are quite a few 6 core 12 thread am4 choices that would perform better and would save $20-40 dollars, allowing dual channel 16gb ram and a 1tb SSD. Intel does give you an easier upgrade path with all the 13th gen stuff, but am4 is still competitive against a $100 4 core.

Nice video. It's been a while since I needed a budget computer from the ground up so it was cool seeing this example. I love the idea that computer components can be upgraded and switched out over time. Ideally I try to get the minimum of what I need computer wise than I'm not in a rush when upgrading parts so I can wait for good deals or better products later on.

The segue at the end was 👌🏾

I have the same case and I figured out you can actually put the smaller motherboard power cable through the back right above the motherboard.......only catch is you have to put it in before you screw the motherboard on

i loved some of the choices in the build today! also,something i noticed on the framework marketplace, there was a "merch" section. i'd love to see what thats about

It runs any AAA games even on high settings, I just played The Last of Us on High at 55-60+fps with the last update, now I'm playing RE 4 in Ultra at 80+ fps, I could have better performance if I upgrade my Ryzen 2600 to a 5600. (I have the Gigabyte Eagle 6600)

Pretty good build. The dark days of $500 integrated graphics COVID PCs are over. Near me I could fit a 6700XT in this budget due to them flooding the used market for cheap.

Hooray for teh budget builds.

As a budget PC gamer myself I appreciate this type of video

Best part about budget oriented low power builds is always the quietness of it all. My first rig I built in 2017 was dead silent at full load I kinda miss it.

on 2017 i3 with 1050 was cheaper and out peform xbox one and ps4 greatly. but now you cant event get i3 and 3050 on 500 and there is console 300 dollar series s with gamepass. plus pc games bad ports and worst they 70 dollar too even pc not have blue ray drive. bocuse that 10 dollar rise coming from game ultra bluray disc. games become 100gb and you can only get 250g ssd on build stuck with 2 games . preying windows 11 not update automatcly. it cant be worser future. not the mention ray tracing performance not even good 60s gpus you stuck with bad ray tracing amd card. not the mention and that prety low this budget case not have disc drive slot eve you get dvd drive 5 bucks. bcosue 5 bucks left on build. on 2017 aaa pc games was still coming dvds despite steam users screams about it. now pc games not come dvd and they dont intend to blueray. even they do intend blueray dive still not cheap on pc and and funny again this case or any case on pc ostly not disc drive slot front. doenst matter budget or not.

not as stable. too many growing pains still on the way. a lot of older games it plain wont run. intel is suprisingly viable for GPUs, but their drivers need a lot more time

Better GPU witht that same CPU would do better because could play at higher resolutions. I have the 12100f and a770 16gb and play at 1440p or 4k and CPU doesnt bottleneck at those resolutions. Also have more ram. I feel a $750 build is very capable since the GPUs have dropped.

That basically allows for going with a better GPU. The old rule of thumb still seems to work: use half of your total budget on GPU.

Right. At $500 just buy a series X. 4k 60 with optimized games. Only get a gaming PC if you’re going to spend $750-1000+

I think the dumpster case search option needs can be explored, but while atx standards haven't changed much, but odd propriety case design layouts could be issue.

Love the way you guys clearly show each step with extra footage!

For that price, I would probably go for the Ryzen 5 5500. It's about $20 cheaper and the motherboard price is comparable. Future proof is not there as much, but this isn't the type of system that someone will end up putting a 16 core CPU with a 4090 in it down the road anyways. You would get a better stock fan, and have a few precious dollars to upgrade the RAM. The idea of re-using an old case is a very good one, and in some cases, the PSU may be decent as well. Like you said though, if the power supply goes, it might take out some your other components with it. I love your low-budget videos (the cost of components, not video quality, lol).

Exactly what I just said. The 5500 is $20 cheaper, so that extra stick of RAM could have been bought. Also the MSI B450M Pro-VDH MAX is another $10 cheaper which could have gone to a better PSU possibly, or at least another fan.

@@tarkitarker0815 Just means you can upgrade to the 5000s later on if you did. I had the 3700x for a while didnt really run into any issues for both gaming and work loads. If you can snag it a a good price, it would still be consider "good enough" for a while longer.

@@lilsammywasapunkrock no it doesnt, the 5500 is just so much faster that it completly negates the 2 cores more the 3700x has. the single core of an 5000 ryzen is 20-35% faster. you can cinebench them, 5500 will win.

Makes you think about the profit margins on those budget prebuilts on Amazon that being sold for 500$ but have 10+ year old stuff in it.

There's a shop in the UK called Cex that sell used goods including PC parts, the prices are similar to used prices on eBay and everything comes with a 2 year warranty

Couple of months ago i got my first pc. Coming from an asus laptop that ran chrome os because windows 10 was too much, it's a blast. Here in Brazil, R$4500 ($900 usd) got me a ryzen 5 4500, an rx6600 non-xt, 16gb of dual channel 3200mhz ram with an a-320 gigabyte mobo, a 240gb m.2, a dodgy psu and a good looking case, filtered intakes and tempered glass pannels. For 1080p very high/ultra 60fps gaming? man, it's freaking awesome. The only thing that makes me sad is, posting this build on PCMR or other subs, north americans just can't understand that this is roughly 4 months of minimum wage here, so saying it sucks and it's a budget build... it really is sad for my reality. i could only wish i could get this parts reliably on 2nd hand markets, maybe spring for better parts but hey, i didn't choose to be born here :|

With that level of processor, 4+ years should be no problem. RAM and GPU will probably become an issue faster than the processor. Good choice!

@Svpracer98 What I mean is that the speed and quantity of RAM, and the quantity of VRAM generally seems to be more limiting in the long run when compared to processor performance. I see and hear about more RAM and GPU upgrades than I do processor

I definitely would have gone for 16GBs ram minimum, even if it means less storage or a used GPU 8GBs leaves 0 room for any sort of multi tasking at all

For a simple terminal machine I could use something not huge and expensive, not a lot of threads needed. An OC on the cores would be nice, not the F-model ofc since that saves needing a gpu (or allows more screens for 1 xtra gpu).

Inspired by all your build videos and scrap yard Wars videos. (You definitely need to do more of those. Prices have come down so much on used parts) I've built my own budget build for the kids and I think performance for the money spent is insane. 1080ti founders 650w Corsair PSU 16gb ddr4 3600mhz Ryzen 5 5600 CPU Gigabyte 450m motherboard (new) 1tb m.2 (new) Case with 6 RGB fans (new) CPU cooler amd wraith prism RGB Total spend.... £398.67 Absolutely chuffed with that build for that price. I couldn't of made it any better. But some how I managed to get a ryzen 5 5600 for the price of a 3600. What a machine for less than £400

If you want to save a little more on the cpu the ryzen 5 5500 is going for under $90 rn, 6 core 12 thread and depending on the game it goes blow to blow with that i3

​@@Camtcan the choices are more in that price range, Intel and AMD both have good CPUs, Nvidia and AMD both have equal pros and cons. If you go with the last gen AMD cpu you cannot use ddr5, If you go with intel cpu the power consumption will make your pc a good heater and won't support future generation cpu etc...
