I used to drive everywhere in the country when I was young. Then a few years ago I had a job going between Detroit and Chicago on an overnight dedicated run (class A). Two things help with that. One is audiobooks. And sometimes you can get them free from your local library downloaded on your phone. Another is I had people I could call at night that we also driving and we could b.s. for hours and keep each other awake.

Life on the road as an expiditer is not that much different than truck driving OTR or regional. It's not as easy as you think. You have to love driving to do it. I've been a trucker for 24 years. Cataracts took me out of it. Once my eye is fixed, I want to go into expiding, non CDL, whether it's a box truck, hotshot, or van. I love the road, and miss it.🚚🚐🇺🇸

Same here I'm going to retire but my exs put a hurt on my saving and retirement so I'll have to work part time my dad drove otr for 30 plus years from 1966 till al.ost 1995 drivr from Indiana to California in a day cab in the 60.s hauled pipe to Alaska and Brazil be gone for s month a time but I'm thinking getting a sprinter van and just me now I'm single and ready ti get out of this factory

I just checked your video out and you hit the nail on the head. I’m in the process of starting (no truck yet, half finished dot/mc application and a few load boards to subscribe too). I hate being home is the reason why I want to start out but mostly I like the money potential. My primary goal is to get started make some dough buy another van or 2 and have drivers. I work from home now in customer service and I hate it. It’s draining and I hate majority of the people I deal with now.

Allen your good at what you do, you paid your dues, and you tell it like it is. Rock on dude lol! I’m looking at expediting for the lifestyle. I’m close to retirement and a widower. Seems like a very good option for myself.

I’m an experienced CDL-A, OTR tractor trailer driver. Interested in continuing to make a living on the road as an O/O, without the same restrictions imposed by the DOT. Including being able to drive and park where class 8 vehicles cannot. This is likely my last “hurrah” before retirement in 8 years. Like you, my time on the road has taught me how to do what it takes to succeed. Intestinal fortitude is what they used to call it!

@@EverythingApax The carrier that I named in my email/FB message to you has welcomed me to drive for them as an O/O about a month ago. Sent me paperwork, including specifications for the vehicle, etc. After searching nationwide online & phone calls since then, I finally located a vehicle (yesterday) at a dealer just a couple of hours away. A new 2021 Ford Transit 350, "high & long", with only 12 miles on it. Simply unheard of right now! Going to check it out Monday, because they're closed on weekends... Almost was going to rent a van, until I crunched numbers and decided to keep looking. Also been calling the carrier periodically to let them know about problems finding the right van. Even so, I'm calling them again on Monday before I buy, just make sure they're still able to start running me now. I've come across too many "used" Transits that clearly had been bought previously to haul loads that were given back because the bottom dropped out of their gig plan OR they may have purchased before even having a connection to get loads. And I was always one step behind in my search, as others snatched them up, sometimes hours before on the same day I called the dealers! I'll let you know when I'm rolling, Brother Allen.

Great info, as always Alan. I started watching your channel because I was considering it. But I've decided it isn't for me because of all the reasons you said. For me, the driving would be the easy part. It's the sleeping in extreme temps that would get me, and being gone for weeks away from my wife. I still watch your channel though because it's cool seeing how a true professional handles the nomad life. Now I've decided to buy a 26000lb truck and expedite locally here in Detroit. (The D has some advantages that other areas of the country might not). Home every night, M-F only. Started my llc today as a matter if fact, but I estimate it will take about a month to make the transition.

I would do the same. Learned some Creole while working construction in Haiti for an orphanage with my church. Once you use the term "How do you say..." in their language, they cut you some slack and try to communicate back.

I am learning about this job because I have 3 young relatives (all under 18) who plan to live in their vans full time and home base at our place periodically. (I have 5 acres) I figured out how to inexpensively set up their vans without permanent furniture so the cargo area is open and their necessities are stowed compactly. This job seems almost perfect for that life style as they'll never be far from home no matter where their deliveries take them. A huge part of this is them having a big enough income and low enough living expenses to build up enough in investments to retire by 40 if they choose. Looks to me like they can clear $30K a year after expenses, which is a lot left over to invest when you don't pay rent.

First thing Big D is limit your trips thru the Popeyes drive thru.

I’d definitely shut down for a least 5 hours a night. You cant function properly and definitely shouldn’t be driving for 21 hours straight

CoVid came along so I've been taking care of my 87 yo mom at her home for almost a year. Funny thing is, October 2019 we took a road trip together and she asked me if I ever missed the road (I drove solo back in the 90's). I told her ya, I do, and since then, I've been looking at the options. I have a degree and business management skills, but I think I've mentioned before, I HATE having to rely on someone else to do their job properly so I look good in front of a client! So, I'm turning lemons into lemonade paying off debts so I owe very little while on the road, and saving for a few months cushion in the saddle. Divorced, Kids are growed and gone. Current GF is a nurse and has an uncle and brother that are OTR, so if I plan down time in a fun city she'll fly out... Keep on Keepin on!

Some people get pain in their back, legs, and rear when they sit for long periods of time. If you're not physically comfortable driving for very extended periods of time, this isn't for you. Eating healthy can also be a challenge because most food on the road is garbage and usually we are in a hurry. Using public restrooms to do your business isn't usually everybody's first choice so that can be an issue for many.

My interest stems from a number of things. 1. 20+ years in transportation as a driver, Logistics manager, loader, etc. 2. Desire to run my own business and test whether my knowledge of the freight business would translate to success. 3. Absolute frustration and burn out of running someone"s business from a desk.

driving for a bad carrier, one that maybe has you sitting a lot or that doesn't get good rates, pay you on time or at all can lead one to pull over and shut off the engine

30+ years working on and around the water. Looking into this so I can get off it. Everyone who works on or near the water knows sleep is sometimes hard to come by but then again you can be on a regular schedule ( depends on the company really ) so I have spent time with my friend who drives and based on the info I get from him this is far better life. Work is work and sleep conditions I can deal with. Plus I wanna experience seeing this country of ours. Still researching of course and I also question cargo van drivers regularly at local truck stops near me to see if the transition is really going to be a good fit for me. Great source of information if you really wanna get it straight from the horses mouth. Be respectful and make sure they are not resting and you will get the reality of the job.

I bought a high roof transit with the purpose of converting it into a camper for my wife and I but got approached by two guys about expediting and got me thinking about a side hustle I'm used to the lifestyle, I'm retired from the military and my wife is a family practice resident so we don't get to spend much time together at this time so I travel a lot on my own. I’m getting into this industry because it seems to be a feasible route to my financial goals. I also really despise working for other people. The idea of being able to work as much as I possibly can, take the days off I want off. I am also trying to find a home base that’s not in the west coast. I feel like this will give me the opportunity to work and live where ever I wanted to.

if I had one tip to give anyone it would be to loosen your financial constraints as much as possible, as you don't know what you will run into. the less you have to rob Peter to pay Paul the better. otherwise there is only so much reading and video watching one can do. once their mind is made up the only thing left to do is do it. if it works out, great! if not back to the drawing board. that's life! hammer down Apax!

Zero Breeze battery powered, portable AC unit. Expensive, but it seems to work. Might help drivers sleep in the heat without idling.

Thanks for the videos. Im considering this. Single 57. Sleep average is 4 to 6 a day. Good driving record. Diabetic couldn't get in a truck. How i found out Diabetes tested 344 sugar. Under control now with shots. Maintain 109 to 135.. healthy other wise.

I started driving big truck in 06. I love being on the road but I hate jumping through hoops and all the regulations with having a CDL.

I used to work with United Van Lanes from 02 to 09 I know how it is to be out in the road be stuffed in a semi with two other guys that I knew growing up from high school. So I have a feel of how it would be on the road It's not always nice it can be hard at times. I've been doing FedEx Ground for a while just about to get back into the sprinter van life.

100% facts all around I got chewed up and spit out but I'm glad I at least tried expediting 4 times... not sorry for failing 4 times I learned a whole heck of a lot about my self and what I can handle. In the transportation industry just a bit more on the casual side of driving now and I am thankful for what I learned from expediting it taught be so much about the road. If you meet people out there and keep in touch always text em first before they call they could be sleeping I think that was a expediting commandment :D

Not at all. Forklifts put the load inside the van.

It is an excellent video. Very informative. One of the best I've watched. However, you missed on the subject of the physical consequences of this job. Lack of circulation? How many drivers do you see, with black/blue/ red/ purple legs that are swelling up from lack of circulation caused from this driving lifestyle ??? Some drivers don't have this problem, many others do. Eventually it will catch up with you. No load is worth losing a leg over. 3 years ago I was so close in that predicament. As I was laying on the hospital bed at the Cleveland clinic with 4 doctors hovering over me, discussing if I should have my I leg amputated or not. Luckily, the head doctor said let's give it a while. So much praying that week. A week later, I was discharged with both legs. A huge and miraculous recovery. It's a huge reality check that I hope nobody has to go through. I get ultrasounds once in awhile to make sure I am clear. I now limit myself on the length of runs I do. I feel so much better. And I am now learning to enjoy my travels, instead of driving drowsy and not half asleep. I stop and the a short walk once in awhile. Don't be greedy and stupid like I was for all those years driving non stop, trying to save the world, thinking that I was going to save the carriers ass, the customers ass....do you really think they are going to care about you as you are layed up in a hospital??? Hell no! Work smarter, not harder! Sorry for the rather depressing post, but I don't want anyone to go through what I did. And don't think fir a minute it can't happen to you. When I started in expediting in 1989, I wore a size 28 waist jeans. Not so anymore...smh..

@@aaronkk2316 I think that after awhile you will find that the van life is so much more enjoyable,,less stressful. It does take some work and quick thinking as the cargo area and the sleeper area are the same. I don't take a 3 skid load unless it is a direct delivery. If it is not, I say at the time the load is offered, "I'd really like to run this load, but I will have nowhere to sleep until it unloads on Monday ....can I be compensated for a room and meals until than??"...by saying this you are not really refusing the load, but putting the ball in their court. It has worked quite a few times in my favor. And many times not so much. But having a 3 skid van will be a huge advantage. When an area is full of vans waiting for loads, that 3 skid capability may get you out ahead of all the others in their 2 skid vans. Just some advice..take care, and the best of luck to you!

I'm going to keep watching your videos and learn more about the expedite side of things. Trucking and Expediting are similar, but not exactly the same. Also, I have some financial hurdles to take care of before I can get my first van. Thanks again for your inspiration!

You can postpone the consequences and repercussions but you can't avoid it later in life on your organs. Sleep is necessary for good health. It's okay to do this for a while and quit it for local runs

Even before I had my Trucking license I never had a 9 to 5 been OTR for 4 years now in Europe but you are right having a strong partner at home to be honest I don't think European trucks are any bigger than your van the back is right behind the seat and the refrigerator is under your bed and we are not allowed to idle the truck in the summer if it's hot deal with it and in the winter we do have bunk heaters but I lived without one for 2 years cuz I didn't know how to use it 😀 would just sleep with my clothes on and extra blankets and that is true there are days when you don't want to drive but you still have to the load still needs to be there and the reason I'm planning on getting into this industry is because I cannot pass my DOT physical and on top of that even if I could driving a truck out here made me realize how much responsibility is to drive a truck low bridges braking distance not being able to turn around everywhere stuff like that makes me prefer van

I prefer the Van too,but I need someone who can help me fix up the Van.So I can have heat/AC in the back.idling is bad for the Van from what I hear.

Thanks for another great video. I spent 30 years as a pipe welder/fabricator. And got to the point where I did not want to be the boss or have a boss. Plus the body just won't perform like it used to. I knew what expediting was as alot of the fittings valves and such came in hot freight to keep that oil flowing. I just purchased a transit 250 148" high roof. After talking to several carrier recruiters I picked the one that I think represented there company the best. I will have orientation 1st. week April 2021. Than it's time to turn n burn brother. Thanks again for the great video's.

Realized I need a van for personal needs and being unemployed for a year figured I might make this my own new job or at least a side gig because no real vacancies are around for my profession in my town and moving somewhere else means being on the road in the end anyways. Main frustration in my country is that any car with gvw>3t has to pay road toll for use of main roads so big vans are expensive to run for personal needs. And in EU expediting for 3rd party with a vehicle with gvw>2.5t has to be licenced. Sooo even before road can kick my ass, laws kicked it first. It was a good tip about researching yourself before commiting to driver lifestyle. But yeah, do research laws or that good deal on used Sprinter might have hiden overhead running cost you did not know about. And that is how and why I came to this and other videos because of need to understand the expenses and concerns of a driver/operator. Thank you for insight.

When I did Otr. It was the one month out mark. Just was missing people in general. No one really to call. Facebook was not a thing. I would stay out 2 months. But yes you will miss people. You will be grateful just to go into an Arby's in Georgia somewhere and really appreciate the person who acknowledges you when they take your order.

@@Mr.Beastforpresident I transport Patients to appointments around the state and other administrative tasks, alot of them. Like Alan and his channel and have not ruled out returning to the road and like the idea of van expediting. Alan is the best at giving a glimpse of what it is like being on the road. I was there and he is 100% correct on what he is sharing. You will not get this information in any kind of training. OTR is similar in always being ready when getting a load assigned. I like the fact that in what Alan does, he stays moving. That was my goal, but with mostly empty trailers and very little miles, I could only do otr for a year.

Where do you get your loads from,what about insurance, what about equipment. What type truck and trailer

The primary reason Chris left expediting after 7-10 days was due to the fact that his van owner would not let him run the engine at idle during down times for either 'Heat or A/C' comfort. This was in his contract and the van owner had a device plugged into the OBDII port to monitor engine idle time. Basically, the van owner didn't give a shit about his basic needs out on the road. I would like to see any van owner expediting live in his van without heat or A/C when the van is stationary in either sub 32 degree temp or above 80 degree temp. As a driver, to get a hotel every night is cost prohibitive. In fact, I seen videos where drivers even with roof -top A/C unit are still getting a hotel room when in Laredo, TX. The A/C unit must not be able to overcome the sun's intense heat. I would never drive for a van owner who didn't have both a diesel heater and a roof-top or auxillary A/C unit. I believe Chris would stuck it out longer and maybe still expediting today if he had heat and A/C while stationary in the van. I know all videos say to first drive for a van owner instead of buying your own van, but sorry, I think I would have to be fairly certain with research this is what I want to do at least for a couple of years and I would buy a low mileage used Sprinter van. In a van owner/driver partnership, I'm assuming the owner gets the mileage benefits, but does the driver get the per diem benefits?

Expediting and trucking get paid by the mile. So when the money is there and the miles are there life is good for me. But I got to be paid. Not having a log book and a largecar seems very convenient.

So my situation is I’ve been out of work on disability for about 9 years now following a gnarly construction accident ( I used to drive a concrete mixer). I’ve got some money set aside and figuring it’s time to return to the work force, and I like the idea of ownership and being my own boss. Currently weighing my options between courier work and expediting. Is there anything in the middle of the 2? Like regional expediting or something along those lines? In the few videos I’ve watched I think you mentioned that a dedicated driver can see upwards of 4,5, even 6 thousand a week, while someone that doesn’t want to go all our can make around 2k a week? I think even 2k a week could really improve my current situation, wondering what the work load would look like with a goal of 2-3k a week if you could provide any insight on that? Also how are people that might be satisfied with these lower income goals looked at? Are they generally frowned upon for not wanting to go at it as hard as others? Can you make and keep good relationships in the industry if you’re looking to maintain these smaller goals? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

What about corporate lodging? Why do you have to sleep in your van?

I am an owner operator with a Box truck non CDL 26' foot straight Box and I'm thinking of switching over to a high top Van to do expediting I understand there is less DOT regulations involved allowing you to run The hours you are comfortable with like you mentioned you were on the road for 23 hours on a few hours sleep Something like that my question is do you have to sticker your Van with DOT and MC numbers I've been told by some people that you do not and that sounds weird to me so I thought I'd ask someone who's been doing it a long time to get a better answer perhaps Thank you for the video and all the great information

No regs. Some shipoers and receivers require you to show them so a magnet will work.

Hey I did something similar when I lived in my van for 5 months travelling from city to city doing uber eats and instacart, where's a good place to start expediting around Chicago?

The reasons I'm going to do it are, I am single with no children, absolutely love to drive, love to see new places, have friends scattered all over the country, love regional foods and local lore, love podcasts and podcasting, can handle stressful situations and unpleasant people, spend an incredible amount of time outdoors (so I'm good with inclement weather), mechanically inclined, I'm a minimalist and I enjoy my own thoughts and company. I can't believe I just found out about this industry!

I literally just found out about the industry today, so still researching and scanning the job openings as I'm not currently able to buy an appropriate vehicle. I owned a few businesses overseas as well as a couple side hustles but had to come home 2 years ago due to covid and lost everything. I've been out of the loop on this but it seems like exactly what I am looking for as I resettle into life here.

I want to get into the industry so I can be my own boss and travel while earning. Dead end jobs don't work for me anymore and some you can't move up in. Besides I wouldn't mind traveling and seeing rest of this world that I haven't seen before it all goes to shit. I also always wanted to buy my own land and build a cabin to retire in when my time comes. That be my reason on why I would want into the industry...

How about. Inspections you got any or how many hours to drive a day

How do you find loads for expediting ? I just bought me a 16' box truck last week.

I also have a class A too, I can drive up to 13 speeds., but i want to bring my dogs on the road, I have dogs, And 1 cat. I need a van where I can I least bring my pets sometimes

Alllen, now that your established do you have a bunk AC that runs off a generator? If you run Straight truck with a spy life is more comfortable.

What’s underrated and should be on your list is handy man skills. To save money installing everything and to keep generators working. Even small repairs on the van. Changing tires, changing belts and Chinese diesel heaters.

I would think you would do it in bursts. 3 weeks on 1 week off.

At this point I owe the universe hella hours of hard long labor so might as well give this a try

Most are after 2 hours. Some are 1 hour. Ask your dispatch. If you bid your own loads it will sometimes be on the ratecon. If not ask the broker.
