Think Outside The Box | Why (And When) I Use A Rectangular Softbox Instead Of An Octabox

It seems that nowadays everyone gravitates towards octaboxes and very few people use traditional softboxes. I still do for a very specific purpose. I touch on why in this video.

    @Greg Cahill I'll keep that suggestion in mind. To be completely honest these videos take some time to make and finding and adding in sample images only adds to the time. I know some viewers like to see it, but unfortunately I barely have time to make the video to begin with. I appreciate the suggestion though and will try to incorporate more sample images in future videos.

    What modifiers would you use with AD300s on seamless paper for a true white background when shooting full length look book shots? Strip boxes? Just barn doors?

  • @AnthonyToglife

    @AnthonyToglife

    2 жыл бұрын

    My apologies on the delayed response @Eric Gray; when it comes to lighting a background to pure white, it's best to use two softboxes and cross light them (I have a video on this on my channel). I actually wouldn't recommend using strip boxes unless your seamless isn't wide (even lighting a 53" wide seamless can be tricky if you don't have enough distance to place the strips from the background to get a wider spread of light. That being said, you really can use just about any modifier and make it work, it all comes down to light placement and flash power. The more physical surface you have to the light, the more important that becomes.

    You like your flash to appear as if it’s natural. That’s respectable in the same way people should have restraint with photoshop. What brand is that softbox? Looks similar to Glow. Would you buy that same modifier again?

  • @AnthonyToglife

    @AnthonyToglife

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Lucy it is a Glow EZ Lock 31x47" softbox; I have quite a few Glow EZ modifiers. I like the simplicity and moreso the price. Now of course they may not be as durable as some of your more expensive brands, but I like to change my style and creative process from time to time so by the time the modifier would need replacing, I'll probably have moved on to something else anyway. :-)

    Hey I'm doing product and food Photography mostly I'm confused between rectangular softbox and octagonal softbox my style of doing shoot is totally based on prop styling and also would u kindly help me suggesting what size should be for softbox currently I'm using regular size umbrella with speedlight🙏

  • @AnthonyToglife

    @AnthonyToglife

    3 жыл бұрын

    @vikas sutariya of course there's never a "one size fits all" when it comes to photography but for me personally, I always use a square/rectangular softbox when doing product or food photography. For me I try to mimic window light and as such the rectangular softbox is more fitting. I'll preface by saying product and food photography aren't my areas of expertise so perhaps there are better ways, but rectangular would be my suggestion. Size-wise, the bigger the better as the bigger the softbox in relation to the subject, the softer the light. But again, one size doesn't fit all. You may be doing something where you want a more contrasty, harder light, in which case the bigger softbox would work against you. You really have to determine your style and from there picking the right modifiers will be easy. A good 2ft by 3ft rectangular softbox would at least get you going.

  • @AnthonyToglife

    @V WorldWide 2x2 softboxes would be considered small. While they're good for lighting the head or head and shoulders, you're pushing them past their usable limits for anything more. I would definitely recommend a 36" or if you have the space, a 48". 48" modifiers are BIG though inside of an apartment or home so I've found 36" modifiers to be the most useful indoors but still provide some soft, diffused light. What light(s) are you using though? Bigger modifiers definitely need more power to be useful...

  • @AnthonyToglife

    @V WorldWide depending on the brightness of your LED lights a larger modifier could pose a problem for them. Bigger boxes need more light so you'd have to keep that in mind. As to jobs, that's a tough one. You'd really need to decide what segment you wanted to target and hone in on your skills there. Product photography isn't easy. There's an art to it, it's easier with a moderate amount of lights (versus using just one and having to blend a bunch of images in post), and it's something that you really would need to practice to get good at it. It's easy to take a picture of a product, it's a LOT harder to convince someone to buy that picture. Portraits of some sort is much easier segment to break into, but even that takes time and practice.
