I Didn't Want To Use OFF CAMERA FLASH So I Did THIS Instead...

#photography #portraitphotography #photographyforbeginners
Natural light will always be king when it comes to photography but when the natural light isn't good, or it's night time, you need an alternative. The usual go-to is off camera flash, but while in Louisville for Imaging I had a photoshoot where I didn't feel like dealing with the cumbersome side of using off camera flash. Instead, I used continuous light, and maybe in a way you haven't thought of before. Watch this video to find my unconventional way of lighting my subject.

The irony with you being worn out is that I think this was one of your best shoots in the 502. Makes me think about instinct, being in the moment, and flow. Just like the basketball this weekend, once the game starts, 99% of the coaching is done.

I appreciate that my friend. I have to be honest, when I was doing this shoot, I was kinda "meh" thinking the images weren't going to be that great (I don't review images a lot during a shoot, I tend to check here and there to make sure exposure is good but otherwise I just go, go, go.) But when I pulled the images off my card and reviewed them on the computer, I absolutely loved how they turned out. So you're right, once the game starts, you're just hoopin'!

Well-done, man! And you're right -- you (like most of us) are overthinking it. Look - you did what a great photographer should do -- evaluated the situation; solved for X, and got the shoot in. There's absolutely no need to rethink the other options. You didn't have to go through an elaborate setup -- you used what you had and got it. Look, I tell people this a lot -- it's rare that someone asks what we used when they see our work. It's only us 😃 photographers that dig that deep, ya know? Meaning - had you not shown me the secret sauce to this shoot, I'd have not known -- because you got the shots, and you had a model who was in sync w/your goals. Dude -- that's a Win -- take it; accept it; relish in it 😃. A buddy of mine recently added a continuous light to his kit. I think I should probably do the same. In most cases it's probably going to be like it was for you -- whereas you didn't expect you'd need it at all for that entire week. But, when you had a situation that called for it, you had it - and that's what's up. Speaks to the saying -- better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Well done -- as always. Thanks for the tip!

Great technique. You can also aim the light through a translucent reflector (like the one in the center of a 5-in-one) for that directional light... Or even through a bedsheet or curtain! Which I'm sure you know but didn't mention here. But it's definitely more work 😂

Aiming the light through the diffuser would basically be the same as using a modifier, which would require a lot more adjustments than bouncing into a wall. That's why I didn't mention it. ;-)

@@AnthonyToglife kind of what I figured why you didn't mention it. And it's a lot more work!

I rented a 55th floor room in Dallas over looking the skyline for a night shoot and I couldn't figure out how to get the shots without having the whole room reflecting in the window. I guess with constant light,I would have been able to see in "real time"how much reflection was present as I adjusted the light position and dynamics. I ended giving up on the skyline concept. My goto small room lighting technique is bouncing a speed light directly into the apex of a corner in the room. Any advice?

So, reflections are your biggest antagonist when shooting windows, and there's two issues at play. One, the actual reflection from your light source, and two, the reflection of the space which is being lit by your light source. The first is fairly easy to address, you simply need to shoot at a different angle than the reflection. It's like photographing a person with glasses, you simply have to move the light source in a way where the angle of the reflection isn't picked up by your camera lens. The second isn't quite that easy. Inevitably, if the room reflection is bright enough to be captured based on your settings, you're going to see it in the window. You can use a CPL to help reduce the reflections, but this rarely would get rid of them entirely. If the light outside is bright enough, you technically could adjust your settings in a way where the room ambient lights don't show up based on your settings but the skyline would. My guess is this wouldn't be the case most of the time, maybe in Vegas where the lights are super bright but most skylines aren't that bright (camera exposure wise). In your scenario, I would have likely bracketed the shots, and got one exposure for the subject and another for the window (with the room lights turned down to eliminate the reflection), then combined them in post. You also could split the difference of the two exposures and then independently adjust the exposure of each in post.

Ha ha I love the term, " Natty Light ". Analogous to that I would describe myself as a " Fake Natty " as I am a big user of performance enhancing flashes ( PEF's for short ) 😁 I dont consider it cheating when everybody else is using the gear....if you know what I mean 😉☺️

My only reason against buying a high watt continues light is power source. Is the battery built in on yours, or does it need external power supply? Now I mostly use 30watt pocket lights when I need constant light, but I've also used 200watt led dimmable bulbs on a light stand. It's a $35 SETUP if you don't need to be mobile.

That is, indeed, the biggest drawback. The P230 is a plug-in so yeah, trying to use it outdoors is practically impossible (unless I wanna haul around a battery or generator, lol). I have a couple of 30w pocket lights that I love, but they’re useless during the daytime even when really close to the subject.
