Think Aroid Market is DONE? TONS of NEW and Gorgeous Varieties at FLOII Plant Show - Indonesia 🇮🇩

I know most of you are done with aroids, but let me assure you that aroids are NOT done with you. At the FLOII plant show in Indonesia, I unveil TONS of NEW aroids that will trend in year 2024 and beyond.
Thanks to the ingenuity, perseverence, sheer luck, and HUGE army of growers spread across the vast lands of Indonesia - Exquisite hybrids, mutations, and variegations are being discovered on a DAILY basis.
Shows like FLOII presents the best of the best, through an excruciating and lengthy selection process. Some of the plants shown in this tour currently exist in small numbers. They are so expensive, that only other growers are willing to buy them. This means that these plants will be cultivated, and be available for us consumers after many years of waiting.
Anthuriums, anthurium hybrids, variegated anthuriums, FLOII,

    The Anthurium kunayalense comes from Panama. They're high in stock now because a year or so ago, a lot of them were poached from the wild jungle in Panama and a lot of them were sent to SEA.

    I was wondering if it was Kunayalense because of Kuna Yala! How awful to know they were poached and exported in such a bad way... Hopefully we can preserve them in their natural habitat

    You can tell the ones that are poached because they have small fresh growth from a thick mature chonk. I saw some in this video.

    I remember folks saying variegated anthurium would be huge in the US for collectors in 2022 but I haven't seen too many people interested in them until the last few months or so, self included. I have a variegated pterodactyl and sweet love but there's defintely a few in this vid I'd love to add one day. The type of variegation makes a world of difference to me though. Thanks a ton for sharing with us! I'd love to go in the near future ☺️

    The variegated anthurium I have seen in the US look kind of sickly unless they have well defined variegation like these.

  • @domo_mother_of_plants

    @domo_mother_of_plants

    @Gee-xb7rt I defintely get that. I've seen a lot with speckled variegation, which is why I wasn't interested in them but I've seen an increase in nicer sectoral variegated ones from growers like SKG and from a few collectors in anthurium FB groups this yr. It'll be interesting to see how widely adopted they become in the anthurium community.

  • @domo_mother_of_plants

    @domo_mother_of_plants

    @onlyplants no doubt! From what I've gathered on IG and FB groups, many anthurium collectors weren't into them for the most part until recently since now there's a little bit more variety in color, types of variegation, and crosses which I think has piqued interest. I'm curious to see how popular they become in 2024.

    People really only say that because they haven't existed much thus far and weren't affordable. I said the same until I was lucky enough to have grown one from a seed. And ever since I understand their beauty.

    I think those types of variegated especially the whites in the albo's are so beautiful as if god painted each one individually. Then comes the browning then they look like you did not take care of them most people do not live in a humid area so they do brown pretty quickly. The market for certain ones like PPP and thai constellation have went from $2000 to now $80 a plant this is how trending plants work. We bring out the "new" and overprice them then they go to tissue culture and drive down the prices and the cycle starts over. I have my plants myself thousands of dollars worth just staying clear of the variegated ones they do not last long.

    Yeah not everyone has the conditions or care style for the variegated. You are on point with the plant market cycle, its been like this since the beginning 😀

    I'm not into anthuriums, but I love your enthusiasm for them! As a beginner plant parent, anthuriums are too big a challenge, and I don't have the right conditions for them in my flat. I do have three caladiums, a Calathea, and an Alocasia that are doing well so far. Maybe in a year or two I'll be ready for my first anthurium.

    Oh yes Anthuriums are for next-level growers. I actually struggle with mine. I keep overwatering and subjecting them to root rot. They are not so forgiving 😅

    @@onlyplants i just found something interesting and I haven't tried it yet, but apparently pine acts as a deterrent for Pythium, which is often what is behind root rot. They recommended about 20% pine in the potting mix.

    All Anthurium are not the same. The flowering varieties that are most common aren't that difficult, the bird's nest ones are a good place to start. If you want the silver venation A. clarinervium is a little hardier than the others. Many of them are epiphytic so you need to grow them more like orchids in a really chunky mix. Tom Croat found some in Peru that are easy growers, A. longissimilobum gets large leaves, A. timplowmanii is a very similar plant and stays small, its one of my favorites and really easy going, just a very slow grower.

    @@onlyplantsoh, that's a shame. I'm an overwaterer too, and I've just rotted my third Monstera. It was a cutting off a sick plant that I took in an attempt to rescue the plant, so maybe I'm not completely to blame. I WILL own a Monstera deliciosa, so I'm going to get a new one.

    The appeal of variegation is so personal. A lot of variegated plants appear sickly. I stopped being a trend Chaser as a teenager with clothing in the 80s. For me houseplants that work well for me and my living environment are the most beautiful.

    Same. I learned long ago to just buy what I personally love. Chasing trends is never satisfying, you’re always going after the next best thing. I was so happy when the pink princess philodendron finally became a common, cheap, plant because I adore them, always have, always will. When they revert to a regular Philodendron erubescens (red emerald or dark lord) I still adore them since I’ve been growing that particular plant for a decade now.

    I plant my aglaonema in aroid type mix soil and water when the pot is almost completely dry. So water before you would a snake plant. Lighting is the tricky part. They like light, but light adjacent. So think pulled to the side of a window, not in it. Or pulled to the side of a 20-40w grow light. My Aglaonema Maria is 2ft down and 1ft to the side of a 20w grow light, it won’t stop flowering. My first aglaonema was a white rain and I figured it needed light so I stuck it 2 ft directly below a grow light and it slowly melted on me 😢 Now I have a ton of Aglaonemas in various colors thriving. They are all filler plants though. Never directly below light or in windows, but pulled back and tucked away in places that normally I wouldn’t put a plant. Hope this helps someone ❤
