One thought about propellers: new divers may have the misconception that you can tell the direction that the boat is coming from based on the sound, but they need to realize that underwater, your ears (which are made to identify sounds in air) do not have any directional capabilities underwater because the speed of sound is so much faster there. From NOAA: “Sound moves at a faster speed in water (1500 meters/sec) than in air (about 340 meters/sec) because the mechanical properties of water differ from air. A boat coming at you sounds like it’s all around you… just getting louder.

For me the scariest things about diving are: - Carbon Dioxide build up when deep diving - Getting trapped without my buddy noticing - Currents that goes downward or out to sea where you are dragged to depths way beyond the limits of your gas mixture(s) and time

Petr Peller drop weights, inflate BCD before you get too deep and that will no longer help, Just have to be on point with the BCD, the valve should auto let air out as you surface but should be on game when lowering pressure as you go up

So, when I started to watch this video, my first thought was “other divers” and “boat props”. Buuuut I have memories of the John and Lorena Bobbit (I lived in the area at the time) and erm... I have a new fear... awesome...

It's a tough one regarding supporting local dive stores instead of the internet shops. I try to do it as often as possible, and the service from stores can be better, especially for items like wetsuits, boots, hoods, etc where it isn't 1 size fits all. And you cant get your cylinders filled online. However when I was looking for a torch a few years ago a UK brand had their torch for sale for £95, I found the exact same torch but without the branding on the side for under £25 inc delivery from China. That's too big a difference and therefore I bought the torch from China.

Maybe manufacturers can do something with prices: Because of cov-19 i decided to buy my first regulator and also support my lds, i knew that it will be a little more expensive buying in my lds than in an online store but i thought it would be a difference around 100 usd or so, but surprise, even that my lds was giving me a special discount the aqualung core cost $10305 mexican pesos (around 460 usd) but in the "spanish version" of simply scuba, the core supreme cost $5398 mexican pesos (around 240 usd) i thought something was wrong so i visited the mexican aqualung web site and look at the official price that is 475 usd, then visited the spanish site and the price tag it is 289 euros for the core and 300 euros for the supreme version. So my lds isn't more expensive just because of little store management costs, but also because the difference between official prices from one side of the pond to the other are huge

For me most scarry scenario, considering also the probability of happening is getting lost from the group. This can happen during photographing or if diving in large group and big currents.

I’d echo with what you said in regards to divers hitting coral, as current DMT. I also have a fear of messing up a skill and incorrectly teaching a student how to do something. Also lastly not being able to dive for a while! My last dive was February and I miss it so much

I know what you mean, my dive computer counts and displays the number of days since my last dive... I was always taught to break down each skill into 5 parts so that you can emphasize each part and give yourself time to remember each five parts of the skill

Safe Diving shearwater perdix is amazing isn’t it, I’m looking into a Teric or a Perdix myself once I pass the DM as a present! I bought the RK3’s as a new set of fins after your review on SImply ( hope you’re okay with the recent events regarding Them! ) and funnily enough that’s what my instructor has said ( luckily it’s my dad so he has a bit more patience than usual! )

Both are Tier 1 dive computers in my opinion and great to use in the water. Can't say much about Simply because we just don't know what the situation is and don't want to promise anything. The important things to skills is to explain why, explain every single step, never skip anything and over emphasize everything

Safe Diving fingers crossed it’s all sorted soon mate! Hopefully still be in business as both myself and my dad use you guys aswelll as our LDS! With the skills, it’s just about taking time as you say and over emphasis / over exaggerating almost to the point that the students are ‘dumb’ and need to know every single part of the skill so they can do them in their sleep

I think dive centres could improve by having a lot more available equipment on display. The ones I've been in have very little or seem to favour one brand. A warehouse of diving equipment but on display!

I fear sail boats more than propellers. At least you can hear the motor (even if you don’t know the direction). The keel board on sailing boats can be deeper than safely stop and they are silent.

I've been riding downhill mountain bikes for almost 25 years, the closing down of local shops is felt here and snowboarding as well.

When I was at 100ft for my open water dives and discovered the dive shop didn’t seat my bcd release valve totally n I was leaking air n couldn’t inflate to ascend. I had done my compass routes perfect and was at the anchor line so I pulled up it until the pressure let me inflate my bcd to ascend.

I think they mean not to just inflate your BCD and shoot to the surface. But you do need to inflate a bit to get neutral and then ascend at a safe rate, tricky with an open dump valve...

Safe Diving I wasn’t trying to shoot up just a little at a time make a stop etc.. but with the leak at pressure I got no inflation at all. That’s why I pulled n finned up until the pressure would let me add air to assend.

Cavediving and Icediving are pretty scary…

Yeah... I had that playing in the Dive Centre until we saw those scenes, and the dynamite scenes... It's important to know our past and how the pioneers did things, but a lot of their practices are pretty scary by today's standards. I'm sure he'd agree if he were still around today.

Safe Diving he s been asked later in his life to edit the original movie to remove these scenes. He said he didn’t to do that to show times change and use it to explain why behaviours must adapt to new evidences. He was not proud of these sequences when looking back must said it was the way people were looking about marine life back then.

Not being able to see the bottom. Or generally not having a special reference. Much panic. Also, losing my buddy. If I lose my buddy just kill me cause I’ve failed them.

Boats overhead sound like chainsaws

Said the guy that works at an online shop, WTF. Maybe people in Spain can complain about the fact that I bougth my drysuit in the UK… In some obscure website from that country… I might have aswell bought it from China… seriously… I understand it affects your bottom line, but instead of whining about it, local shops (diving, or anything) have to adapt and find other sources of revenue to find their place in our society. I have some great local examples of shops doing just that and they are doing fine. Give that added value that Diveinn or Simplyscuba can’t. The local shop is not an NGO, they should know it, at least the once I deal with (as in they fill my tanks and I buy something from time to time) knows it perfectly, they even adviced me once to go to buy something at another shop (in another country) because the alternatives they had were far more expensive. So, something that scares me about scuba diving is an industry with a fix mindset that might not be able to adapt, and industry where the economics makes innovation unprofitable, and industry where it gets harder and harder to get new divers in the water because it is a very expensive sport. Cheers, I respect you lots.

My biggest fear is losing my mask. I know I had to practice it to get certified, but I’m a real world scenario, I’m sure I’d panic pretty bad

I have the good fortune of having collected many good masks, but if I were recommending someone buy a backup mask, I wouldn't recommend a duplicate, because it would deteriorate and end up wasting a good mask. I'd go for something in the 'okay' range. Nothing rubbish that wouldn't last long or fall apart, but nothing fancy that gets crammed in a pocket over and over again...

Zach: This is a very dangerous fear to have and, fortunately, it's easy to get rid of. At the beginning of your dive, "kiss the water hello" by taking your mask off, reg in and putting your face in the water and breath for a minute or two. This will acclimate you to having water on your face and train you to be a mouth breather. Then, if someone knocks off your mask, it's not big deal. You won't panic and you won't injure or kill yourself as a result.

The bit about supporting your local dive center hits my sentimental side but unfortunately disintegrates entirely when everything and everyone around you pushes capitalism so hard. I believe I’m underpaid so if that means the only equipment I get is Chinese or no equipment at all then I’ll take the Chinese. How does supporting your local dive shop work when according to capitalism they’re no longer competitive and therefore financially viable? That goes for any brick and mortar shop

You can’t get a tank filled online. All brick and mortar stores have a lot more overhead then a online store. When it comes to gear service you will be without longer if you have to ship it off somewhere.

The thing that gets me is regional price fixing. Most scuba gear from the major manufacturers are sold for far less ( approaching half price) in Europe as apposed to here in Canada or the United States. Manufacturers are now forcing European online retailers to stop shipping overseas. And of course there is a wide spectrum of wealth across Europe, in what other Industry do consumers tolerate this price fixing?
