The most important thing about scuba diving is that you do it safely. And that is what Safe Diving is all about.
On this channel, I will discuss all aspects of going underwater from equipment advice and techniques to the little things like what to pack in your bags for a dive trip.
My entire professional career has been spent in and around the scuba diving industry and traveling to diving destinations both warm and cold.

Twin 12s are bloody heavy - I just got mine back from servicing and after carrying them, I picked up my 15L cylinder and almost threw it up in the air! Great for deep dives, but I think the 'benefit' of not 'faffing' between dives is vastly outweighed by the con of all that weight. Underwater, of course, you barely notice them!
Hi there. Bought myself a mares xr back plate wing system bcd. Never used one before. Will it be tricky to use the first time ? Going to dive at florida Keys in July. Would you recommend using a wetsuit or just a rashguard. By the way, Thank you for all the helpful videos. Always watching from my side. Thank you kindly
Hi! I'd keep to simple dives with new gear so that you can focus on the new gear. In the water you probably won't notice much of a difference. With new BCDs I take extra care on ascent so I have plenty of time to dump gas. As far as exposure protection, it depends on how much you feel the cold. Too much is usually better than not enough and most divers seem to use a 3mm unless they're diving deep or long dives or in colder northern waters and need something thicker. In warmer waters some divers are good in just a rash vest. I tend to test the water on dive #1 in a wetsuit and assess if I need it for dive #2
Meh. Too much variability in setup for me.
Not sure if this has already been covered but would anybody know and have reference to what submarines use a Mk25 for internal pressure regulation?
It's been a few years, I'll see if I can find the article I read
My cylinder sometimes gets slanted like yours in this clip. Any tip on fixing it?
Dst and xtx50 best dive invention ever.
You only need to identify as correctly weighted 😂
Best twin set setup and pro ia dive side set hahahah
You're using your cutting tool as a retainer, smart. Didn't think of that.
Yeah, I don't tend to use external batteries and a knife is more useful than a retainer bar
Top Video & explanations . Thanks
👍
XDeep SM bcd setup
Very helpful, thanks
What is that d ring you use on the bottom left side of your plate for adjusting the harness when you don it?
That's an Agir Harpa Loop. there have been a few copies over the years like the Mares XR SF2 or the Tecline Chinch
@@SafeDiving thank you so much. Love the content. Keep it up
Hey!!! Im looking to buy my first backplate system. Do you know if the Scubapro Stek pro backplate is compatible with the Apeks wtx30??? Thank you Mark!!!
I dive twins for the reserve gas and redundancy. Better to carry gas you don't need than to need gas you don't carry.
I’m so glad I skipped diving twins and went right to breathers that shit looks so damn heavy my breather only weighs 70lbs with 20lbs lead mount to it for my dry suit lol in wetsuit I only need 10lbs lead
How do you calculate the amount of lift you need?
Thank you Mark, even after three years you're still helping a lot of people!
I do what I can...
interesting topic, i'm 177cm 80kg have been diving with 2 piece 7mm suit hood, gloves and boots, so lots of float! 80 al tank and carrying 2x 11lbs in bcd pockets 2x 2lbs in trim pocket and 4 x3lbs on the belt, 38 lbs all up and i know if i drop the two 2lbs i cant get submerged. About to make a big change with now one piece 7mm suit and steel tank. As a starting point how much weight should i drop from my belt? then ill do the float test with 50bar in tank after a dive. Thanks
I know this is an older video, but I hope you review your Poseidon Cyklons. I recently purchased a set and would love to get your opinion on them. This was a great video. Thanks
I love the Cyklons, they're a simple regulator and very practical. If they're new you may need a new fitting to let you connect a standard 9/16" regulator hose. Poseidon 2nd stages often needed an adaptor to fit a standard thread regulator hose
Please show a video on how to apply the antifog film or the freedom film
This is great information. Believe it or not we've been diving (all recreational) for 30 years. I've never really looked into backplate systems before but am looking to change up my BCD for a more travel friendly lightweight option and this is looking like the ticket for me. Plus I am now semi retired, so we're diving more and am doing much more underwater photography so again this looks like a much cleaner solution. Thank you for all the info. Great stuff. 🙂
Nice! You can dive 'recreational' BCDs all of your diving career, we were using them during my commercial course but, a backplate gives you so much more control and customisation to build your own BCD. I'm actually writing a video for this Saturday on the @scubadivermag channel about backplate components and choices if you're interested
Can you dive in egypt with a drysuit i see many people wearing one when diving egypt ?
Sure, you need to make sure that you won't overheat on the surface but, a drysuit isn't a bad idea for longer or deeper dives to stay warm.
Hi Mark, thank you for making all these greatvideos, they are so helpful that I watch them again and again whenever I’m thinking of changing my setups. Best regards for you.
what a pansy
why no chest strap?
I have big enough shoulders that chest straps aren't required. Most divers find that they don't need chest straps with a single-piece harness. Some do need a chest strap but, they're fairly rare on single-piece harnesses
What size thickness is that bungee cord?
Great tips. I also tie a little knot at multiples of 5 metres so i have an indication during safety stops and a a back up should my computer fail..
19"45 the half round on the SI tech "pizza cutter" are or the inside of your dry suit to engage the round pucks of your drysuit inflator or exhaust valve. Its an essential tool for tightening and removing SitTech valves.
16:36 if you have an under garnet with a thumb loop elastic just pull that thought for gas equalization between the dry glove and drysuit.
12:30 if your shore diving on really cold says get your self a large IGLOO or GOTT blow molded water cooler with snap top lid. Before leaving for the day fill it with hot bathtub water. While on site before the dive you can soak your hood and any wet gloves in the hot water. Replace the lid to keep the water insulated and between dives warm up your gear and fingers. Works a charm! Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter
Where do you of would you attach the canister for your primary light to the BP&W?
Lumen doesn't measure how bright the light is, but how much light it produces. A 500 lumen torch with an 8° beam angle is much brighter than a 500 lumen torch with a 110° beam angle. The same amount of light is distributed over a much wider area wit a 110° beam angle. The measure for brightness is Candela, but very few manufacturers list that value. Lux is a measure of how much light hits an object, so it depends on the object what the Lux value is. Most lights have a hot spot. This is fantastic for signalling, but it's really bad for videos. For videos you want an evenly spread light so everything in the frame is lit equally. Conversely, a video light is terrible for signalling. If you're diving in murky water, you want a tight beam to punch through. A wide beam will just create a wall of light and prevent you from seeing anything.
For Apeks regulators you will need the following tools: For removing port plugs: 5mm hexagonal Allen wrench (3/16" will have quite a bit of play and can damage the port plug, 7/32" will not fit) For removing HP and LPI connectors: 14mm wrench (9/16" can be used but will have a little play) For removing second stage non-swivel connectors: 9/16" wrench (15mm will have quite a bit of play and can damage the connector, 14mm will not fit) For removing second stage swivel connectors: 11/16" wrench (18mm will have quite a bit of play and can damage the connector, 17mm will not fit)
Love my Hollis SMS-100D sidemount system BCD!!!!!
What do you think about Helium dive gear for bp/w? Great video. Thanks
How long should the spool be?
Is Apeks out of their mind on spool pricing or is their "technology" really worth the astronomical mark up?
They are nice. but, still do the same thing as any other spool or reel. It's a bit like comparing budget regulators and premium regulators. Both will do the job but, one is much nicer...
#askMark I really enjoy watching your videos and I recently acquired my first drysuit, a DUI Yukon II. I was limited by budget so it was an off the rack drysuit with one thigh pocket. In the future when budget allows I’d love to get a custom built drysuit but for now I’d like to figure out how to add another thigh pocket to my drysuit. I have done a lot of research and it seems that an XS Scuba glue on thigh pocket is my best option. It comes with glue but I was wondering if you have had any experience with this pocket or others that glue on? The last thing I want is all my expensive contents of the pocket falling out during a dive because of failed adhesive or worse yet, a ruined drysuit. I appreciate any insight you can give and thank you for putting out great videos!
It's often the same contact adhesive that we use to fit new seals on drysuits so, the glue is soing to last. A little adhesive goes a *long way* and try to be as neat as possible because once it's on your suit it's impossible to get off. Remember that I work at @scubadivermagazine now so you can find all of my new videos over there now
you looks like dave in dave the diver
GREAT VID. Can I ask where can I get a 90 degree hose fitting like the one in this video? Do you still use one now? BTW I have bit threw one mouthpiece trying to keep my reg in because it's goes straight out to the side like you mentioned in this vid. Fatiguing my jaw to say the least! Thanks, #AskMark
Quite a few places make them, this one in particular I think is an Apeks 90 Elbow. But if you search online for a 'scuba 90 elbow' you should get plenty of results.
#askmark hey Mark great vid as always, under the accessories section you mention a clip to allow easy dof and don can you share a link, and or the name of the part?
This one in particular is an Agir Harpa Loop but there are a few copies out there. Mares XR make the SF2 and I think Tecline make one also
Awesome thanks!@@SafeDiving
@@SafeDiving update: I got the mares xr sf2 and wow why isn’t this talked about in every bpw how too? It makes it so much better!
I reckon Owl City are the reason you call hybrid bcd’s butterfly wings.
Do you go with lood also
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🥇🥇🥇🥇🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆💝💝
I tried a bit of vaceline. But I have to put on some more then haha
Oh man. The mask is my problem with my beard. Gona try all these things
this lens permit the use of tooth paste or burn lens method to avoid fog? thank you
Great video as always. One question: do you use the same plate and change the bladder (30 to 40lbs of buoyancy), for rec diving ang t c diving or do you keep it fixed!?
Yes, you can use the same backplate and harness and swap the bladder to swap between single and twin cylinders. I tend to use the steel backplate at home and then a separate aluminium backplate for traveling.
