I had a black Great Dane, Damon, years ago. Used to take him to a small, unlit park behind my apt every night. One night, after he'd taken care of business, I headed back up some steps out of the park. Suddenly a man's voice asked me if my dog was friendly. It really startled me because I hadn't heard any sound of someone approaching...but I tried to remain calm and told him my dog was very gentle. (I was young, that wasn't my brightest move) I tried without success to see where this man was standing, but it was just too dark. As I continued slowly up the steps, Damon, pushed ahead of me and began a very low, rumbling growl. I'd never heard him growl, EVER. And that really set off my nerves. As I neared the top of the steps I could see a man in a dark track suit but still couldn't see his face. He was just standing at the top of the steps, as if waiting. I stopped as Damon continued to growl and remain in front of me. He suddenly bared his teeth at the guy and growled even more menacingly. The guy didn't say a word, but finally backed off and walked away into the night. I knew my dog had protected me from whatever very bad energy the guy had been giving off. But I had no idea my gentle giant would be protective of me, or that he could even get those slobbery jowls up far enough to bare his teeth...but I was so grateful for his protection that night.

What a good dog! My dane absolutely loved everyone, and was very well socialized, but he did this once on a walk. I was walking in a wooded area with a twisted winding path. He stopped dead in his tracks, the hair on his neck stood straight up and he started to growl. We couldn’t see past the curve but he didn’t like whatever he was sensing. I thought I was about to come face to face with a wild animal. Pretty soon two young men came into view and I told them very loudly that they better make a wide path around us because if he went for them I couldn’t hold him, they listened. He was used to older teenage boys of all sorts coming to our house but he did NOT like these two. Always trust when a dog doesn’t like someone!

Probably the American bred was . Being an 53 yr old American myself, I'm constantly saddened how many chitty breeders we have . Much in part due to the AKC who always puts size and coat before anything else . They used to "hate" working dog people like me , but now they infiltrated the working dog competition arena to get their complete "show line" dogs titled in Protection sports like Schutzhund. I've seen and trained around these dogs who shouldn't ever been trained Protection work let alone pass and get a title . Like so many things in America, if you got the money , you'll get your title , temperament be damned . It's so bad now I see Labrador's that are easily mistaken for Mastiff's bc they are so yuge , even worse I've seen Labs who don't like water. Total mess man

Also we took my youngest niece down to see the dogs that my oldest niece had and so she's just standing there all of a sudden Ace comes with lumbering out and he's just as gentle giant, but she just sees this big dog running toward her and she went oh jesus! My children grew up with them, they were playmates, best friends, and avid protectors. My daughter cut her teeth on my Dutchess ears, lol. My nephew had leukemia he passed at 4 yrs old. Duchess would not let him slide! Now I have Bentley that's the same age as my grand daughter, 2 yrs old. He's been with her their whole lives. He's her partner in crime, his mouth is her toy box. I married into the great dane (well actually Daniff) life. Logan is quite a bit bigger than his regular dane friends due to his English mastiff side. But what really bonded me even closer to Logan was his ability to tell I was pregnant 2 weeks before I knew. All of a sudden he would lay either on top of me or at my side at all times and follow me everywhere. He continually pushes his face into my belly and sniffs incessantly. He's a good dog. I still can't get over how he new 2 weeks before an early pregnancy test. Crazy!

@@GreatDaneCare Dogs can smell it, and not just Danes. So can I, sometimes. Standing in the hallways of Battalion HQ when at Fort Bragg, a group of men were in conference with a female Captain. The men were all doing "Deep Voice" and posturing, so my suspicions were already raised. After the impromptu conference, the men all departed their merry ways, and the Captain asked me, "Specialist Time Surfer, what is up with all these men going Cave Man?" "I have a suspicion, Ma'am, permission to approach?" "Granted, she says, looking at me funny. I step forward and sniff the nape of her neck. I step back, smile, and say, "Congratulations, Captain, you're pregnant." She's Immediately, "Please don't tease me, we've been trying for years." "Sick Call is still open, Ma'am, I suggest a Serum hCG test." Guess who got Surf and Turf at the Officer's Club that night, compliments of Captain and Major Expectant Parents? Just the other day I walked into my Chiropractor's office, stood there and took a deep breath, and asked, "OK, who's pregnant?" And the young lady sitting at the desk raised her hand. I said, something isn't right. May I smell you?" "Umm, OK. I guess." "Nope, you aren't the only one here." Doctor walks out, stands next to me, and calls her next patient. I look at her and say, "You're it." She says, "I'm what?" and the room erupts in laughter.

One day my wife looked at him and said I Love You. He answered back and repeated my wife. Since then we can tell what mood he,s in when he answers. Sometimes real low ,other times real distinctly. Other times just half the words. It,s really hilarious. Doc, is eight years old now and the years flew by fast. He,s doing great and still a lot of fun along with a chocolate lab that,s the same age. Great Danes have a shorter life span and I dread when that day comes. He,s knows my soul . We,'ve had dogs all our 45 years of marriage. Every dog we had was great and loved. We,re up in age now so no more dogs or cats. Only because we wouldn't want to die and leave our pets behind. The worst thing that we hate the most in life ,is to have to put a pet down. It takes a very long time getting over it. Dogs are sinless. They go right to the Rainbow Bridge. When I pass away, I will want to go to the Bridge to see all my dogs & cats we,'ve had. I'll see my family & in-laws later on Lol. When I'm on the other side and searching , there better be and Rainbow Bridge there with all my pet's waiting for me , or I'm gonna kick somebody,s ass. 😊

I've only owned small dogs, but my experience with a Great Dane was when one came visiting to our rural home. The 4 foot fence that works fine for my dogs was no barrier at all to our visitor. He hopped right over it and sweetly greeted us and just ignored my dogs who were beside themselves and barking their heads off. He had such a kindly nature. We knew he wasn't a stray because he was clean and well fed; later we learned where he lived and that he had escaped from home for a bit. I've never forgotten how sweet he was.

I had a great Dane as a teenager. When we got a kitten he mothered it constantly. My funny story though there are many is running a bath, switching off the taps and going to my room for my towels and PJs and returning the to see him in the bath, casually lay on his side trying to cram as much of himself in the water but there was a large enough part of his ribcage still above water and the cat was curled up there chilling like it was an ocean island. Obviously he wanted a bubble bath instead of his usual shower and looked at me unapologetically. How can you get even slightly mad at that?

Whether it’s when you walk in the door from work, or just standing/sitting near them. They lean on you. If you try to push them away, they lean even more. It’s to the point I have to warn my friends not to get sandwiched between my two Danes, otherwise they’ll get crushed 😂

I got my first Dane in 1984. 39 years ago. I’m on my 5th and 6th now. Once you love a Dane, you just can’t stop. One does better with a playmate. One by itself gets bored with nobody to play with. My male is 36” tall at the withers. He’s 2.5 yrs old. My female is 32” at the withers and she’s not even two years old so she’s still growing. The thing is, they don’t look big to me. When I’m out with my male, people start saying, “Look at that big dog.” I start looking around too, I want to see the big dog, not realizing it’s my dog. He looks even bigger because I’m only 5’0” and weigh 110. Danes are the best. I’ve loved and lost several. I get about 12 years out of one.

1:40 The reason dogs watch their people go to the bathroom is to protect them, when you're going to the bathroom the dog will watch you in attempt to protect you when you're in a vulnerable state. This is why some dogs insist on maintaining eye-contact when they're defecating, they want you to be on the lookout for danger.

He’s turned 7 this March 18th and he’s still healthy as the horse people mistake him for! He has every single trait mentioned. He farts every time he stretches, LOUDLY. He talks constantly and makes so many funny sounds, including a great Chewbacca impression. He’s not really afraid of anything, but he hates a lot of movement. We have pull-up bars and he’ll yell and nibble at whoever is on them. He also likes to gently grab hands in his mouth to play tug of war, and takes up the whole queen sized bed! My dane (Molly) has actually split her tail smacking it against the wall when she was a pup…. The other issue is kids around my pool. If we allow her outside, she does everything in her power to keep the kids out of the pool. It drives her crazy to have kids playing in the pool. She has worn the pads off her feet chasing and playing with the kids when in the pool … great video, I am hopefully adding my newest Blue Dane tomorrow…. I can’t wait, they are amazing family dogs.

Mine would wake herself up when she farted and look at me as if to say "was that me or you?". Other dogs shrink in size once you own a Dane. Trying to bath mine was a challenge, yet when I was in the bath, like clockwork 8 mins into a relaxing soak, she would open the door and jump in the bath with me. To say a Dane becomes your best friend doesn't come close to scratching the surface of your bond with them. I'm embarrassed to say, I've lost family members and the pain of losing them was nothing compared to losing my Dane. If you treat them as they should be treated, a Dane is so much more than a dog. Mine was my soul mate, a gift from God, 10 years after losing her, the pain is still there and I miss her so much.

From the day I took her, she was loved and cared for, she went from a broken soul to beautiful majestic angel. I wouldn't trade our time together for anything. My Dane was also scared of any cord or string on the floor - no fence needed for him - just put down a phone cord & he wouldn't cross it. My Dane also had no clue that he had hind legs. I lived on the ground floor of an apartment building & took him through the patio door on walks every day, but without fail, he would jump over the door frame with his front legs & SMACK his hind legs against it! Then, he'd look behind him as if he was horrified to realize that he's a DOG...with 4 legs!!!

Our Dane just passed. He was 11 years old. He was the biggest pup of the litter and mature healthy weight was 210. We did not neuter him and he was even healthier right up into his old age. He was not a couch potato. He was an active dog and loved to hike up in the mountains. We trained him to watch over our laying hens. His dog house was the size of a small shed and he loved it. He loved raw food but oddly insisted on only eating eggs cooked softly in butter. He loved bath days where we cleaned ears, trimmed nails and let him dry under the sun. Advise: Keep them active and intact and they will be healthy and live a long life.

One of the things that i was unprepared for was when he hit that puppy growth time when i would come home from work & he was noticeably larger than when i left 8 hours prior! As a 175lb adult, he loved small dogs...the smaller, the better. I was talking with a neighbor one afternoon, he had a very small, very old Yorkie. As we were talking away, i happened to look down and he had picked up the Yorkie in his mouth! I quickly realized he wasn’t trying to eat it...he was simply helping it onto a higher curb. Anytime someone had a very small dog in the big dog park area, it was a matter of time before Greyson was carrying the small dog around. Talk about some freaked out owners!

My son had 4 chihuahuas so keep him wasn’t an option local shelters at capacity. I told him in to foster but soon after I was absolutely in love. When I start to cry again, she told her once again, and this time was greater emphasis, the puppy, with silent all night.. and this was only the start of the training a little Willy.

This is 100 percent accurate. Just lost my Dane of 10 years yesterday. His name was Monster. Not only do they fart but they will stare directly into your soul while you are petting them and then promptly burp directly into your nostrils. The farts were atomic at times. Have you ever been awoken out of deep sleep because of a smell? I have. Another thing is ours did not like walking in tall grass and by tall I mean a few inches. He would high step through the grass to find the perfect spot (in his mind) to pee or poo which really was the worst spot in the yard like where the kids liked to play or right beside where you are sitting/standing/working. You can smell it 20 yards from "ground zero" as if it is right at your feet. They can snore super loud. Their floppy lips make a nice raspberry sound on the exhale. It's great at 2am. They are strong. I was nearly knocked out when mine punched me in the face while we were wrestling in the house. I saw stars and everything. The can hit their tails so hard on things that they can split open and they will fling blood all over your house. If CSI showed up and used their blood detection light thingy you'd definitely go to jail. Not one aggressive bone in his body though he liked to be the dominate one and will stand over any other animal and stare straight down at it. Other animals don't like that apparently. Mine also headbutt a horse in the ribs once. He saw it in a field at my friend's farm. He ran full tilt and rammed it and then came straight back. The horse had no idea what to do and just watched it happen. Even though he had his quirks and could eat an entire pizza or a loaf of bread within seconds if left alone with them. I will miss him greatly. He was my buddy. RIP Monster.
