The most useful Great Dane training command that you're not using! | Great Dane Care

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Everyone knows about common dog training commands such as sit, down, and come (recall). However, for giant breeds like Great Danes, the place command is incredibly useful.
If you'd like more information about why the place command is useful or how to teach it to your Great Dane, make sure to take a look at the dedicated article on our website at greatdanecare.com/place.

    My husband and I also have a deaf Great Dane. She understands 5 different signs at the moment and we are going to work on place next. Dogs are great at learning and in the wild dogs use body language to communicate so sign language is just an extension of that. I really don’t understand why you would t believe this?

    good morning! I just adopted a Great Dane. He is 11 months old. He is about 100 lbs and fast as heck! I am looking for a great guide as to how to start training him where he is a teenage. he does great on his lead until he decides to become a wild child. 3-6 pm seem to be the witching hour. I want us both to have fun safely. He does not know stay or come yet. He had broken rear leg and has been in a cast for 3 months so I think they kept him pretty quiet and did not work on manners. Any help would be appreciated!!!

    Sit using flat plam facing up, Down index finger down, Wait (temporary and they will sit with my palm facing them), Place (longer wait and they will down with my palm on sideway), Break (from any command but they usually running up to me with both hand stretching out left and right), come (no hand gesture neccessary but sometimes I waving back at me), Off (don't paw on people or bark too much, no palm gesture), Pee (my older Dane, she will pee on her favorite spot and come back in right away instead of running off to the fence the moment the door open to bark at neighbor dogs I point on the side left or right), Up (from sit and down with no gesture but sometime I lifting up my finger motion), Up by hitting on your chest (they will paw on you), Paw (they will shake with your hands with your hands out). Place is very important during bath/shower. I am still trying to train the younger but HUGE puppy (1 year old but 104 lbs) on many of the commands above. He would listen but after several tries mostly.

He doesn't get excited to learn and it takes him a lot longer to catch onto things unlike my Boston who learned everything super quick. My 18-month old great dane is incorrigible. He has fought the leash since 8 weeks old and even with professional training he could not be leash trained. Choke and prong collars do nothing. If I have the strength to pull 130 pounds then he will choke on the collar and be dragged. He chews the leash, runs, pulls and darts off in whatever direction he wants to go in. Such a sweetheart but so much energy and so stubborn!

    @@YSLRD so I've noticed he has the energy and independence of the dalmatian but he gets his feelings hurt so easily, especially when told no. He also loves to please and work. I am in the process of breaking some bad habits his previous owners let him aquire i.e when told no he thinks it's a sign of aggression and wants to get mouthy and talk back( wants to nibble on hands and growl). When this happens he is given a time out in a kennel, when he has calmed down he is allowed out again. I really love this dog and his personality :)

    I am wondering whether to use a harness or not? Pros and Cons?

  • @GreatDaneCare

    @GreatDaneCare

    3 жыл бұрын

    Cons would be that you need to keep buying larger ones as the dog grows, and have them with you all the time if your Dane’s behavior depends on it. Pros - for really stubborn leash pullers they can greatly help

  • @pmc4218
    @pmc42184 жыл бұрын

    Very important command is no jump or whatever you want to keep them from jumping up on people. No dog should but more important for large dogs. I've had Danes and I adore them but they need extra manners because they are huge and they love people travel

    My Great Dane is two, I can not keep weight on him!! He is shiny and healthy but so skinny!! Do you have any suggestions? We are doing “meat balls” hamburger, egg, cottage cheese mixed into balls. He does have a grain allergy, so he is on a special food. We give him raw chicken once a week, with bone in. I just want him to gain some weight!! Help!!

    Danes are the easiest dogs I've ever housetrained. 1) Clean any messes with enzyme pet cleaner. 2)Take her out ALOT. 3) Realize that a dog's potty needs are similar to yours. Don't make her wait. 3) WATCH her inside. If she starts to go, get her out fast. 4) Don't over correct. She'll want to hide to do her business. 5) Praise good behavior every time. Properly done- 1 week max.
