They Took The “BOY” Out Of Boy Scouts

Ойын-сауық

Boy Scouts is becoming "Scouting America". It's crazy that having gendered spaces for both men and women is simply not inclusive enough.

I actually have no issue with girls joining the boy scouts program since the troops are suppose to be gender segregated. There is a whole in the market, so the boy scouts organization is filling it by letting girls in. The issue is that instead of marketing it as offering an opportunity for girls, they market it as genderless. Today they change the name. Tomorrow they desegregate the troops and the boy scout experience is gone. Why is it so hard to give things to women without taking things away from men?

The girl scouts like their program just the way it is. As a parent, do you want you girl to learn to be an outdoor person, canoe, sail, hike and backpack? Maybe hunt and shoot? Or how to sew and do crafts. Lara Croft or Sally homemaker? Different types of girls go to each

Girl Scouts of America aren’t changing anything about their name. Seems ironic some women didn’t want men/boy’s clubs in the past. Some still don’t. Literally parents and teachers are the initial ‘influencers’ and these are symptoms of society’s inability to dictate the definition of individual freedoms. When women are choosing hypothetical bears over men- there’s “literally” a lot of women and teenagers right now who have been indoctrinated by their role model to be afraid. Look in the mirror before blaming others people

We joined BSA with my daughter because Girl scouts went so liberal a long time ago. We wanted a traditional scout experience. This year we quit and joined American Heritage Girls, because they are actually trying to providea scout experience in a safe environment. BSA has a newish eagle required badge that requires DEI conversations with your counselor. We had a new leader whose husband is a professional activist and she wears rainbow pins on her uniform and my husband heard her talking about her feminist rants at camp. Our daughter was not safe with her. There is a cross dressed (I can't tell what gender he wants to be) leader in another troop. He comes to camp dressed in the oddest ways possible clearly looking to start a problem. BSA has ruined the program. 😢 They recently sent a survey out to female scouts asking about their gender identity and how they felt about mixed gender troops. BSA is about to implode itself.

Later that night a girl started yelling and crying going asking around for help luckily I was awake and we went to a leader and she told me she felt someone down her pants. No one believed her until they found the man who did it, they didn’t do anything to the man. Wasn’t arrested or anything. Boy Scouts isn’t the same as it used to be.

This has been coming for years. None of that move surprises me. I deeply regret how the Boy Scouts of America has fallen from the noble organization it used to be. As a young boy living with a single mother, BSA was a lifeline to me in some of my most formative years. What BSA has, historically, been, seems to be increasingly lost in some desire to simply be socially acceptable. Baden Powell is probably rolling in his grave.

  • @TinyGiraffes

How does this in any way make them less noble? They do the same thing for more people. You assume this is no longer a lifeline for the kids now but I doubt you've actually looked into it. Instead you just went "They did something I didn't like so that means they're bad people doing bad things" When infact it's full of parents trying to support not only they're kids but other kids as well. My sons are Cub Scouts - I (his Mother) am his Den leader for the kids in his grade. They needed volunteers - and I waited and waited and they couldn't get any. So I stepped up. I guess I could have just let them fold instead? But I'm glad I stepped up. Our family has LOVED scouts and it is a huge part of our lives now. I will say that you can't just call BSA (or Scouting America) all bad for any reason. The entire program really is up to your own Pack - the whole experience depends on the men (and women!) who volunteer to take time out of their schedules (unpaid) to make it what it is. Our Pack is amazing - we do so many things, have a lot of great leaders and resources. Parents are really involved and they don't take any crap and handle situations appropriately. I can't say that all Packs are like this - BUT - you can't judge the entire program on the top leaders. It is local leaders that have all of the control over your experience. (Same goes with girl scouts - our Cub Scouts do more than the girl scouts, which is why we have quite a few girls in our pack)

I was super upset about not being a scout anymore. Then her best friend, who is an Eagle Scout, gave me some of his old scout books, and my mom found me some of the older Girl Scout books. I devoured them (i have a HUGE collection of scout books from over the years) and they would help me when i wanted to try something out from the book. I can say I am very proud of not only the sewing and homemaking skills I learned from the older girl scout books but the skills I have for basic survival outside of a city setting. I remember asking my moms friend if I could join the Boy Scouts, he said in no uncertain terms, "Absolutely not. It's meant for boys and men, which you must respect, but you can learn the skills." More people in the world need to hear that, be it "no. it's for girls and women. And you need to respect that" or "no. It's for boys and men. You need to respect that."

When there are trips, they take their own tent, sometimes friends camp together, others alone, it depends on the person itself. But yeah, its all together. I guess, if we get stuck in a scenario that requires survival skills (like the ones u can learn with the scouts), no one needs to depend on the other. Or some people may be able to help others, either male or female. Tho they have some skills set for one and for the other, but about 95% are for all genders. The BSA has a very robust Youth Protection program in place for its youth. Its important to remember that many of these cases happened long ago and the only reason they were able to be prosecuted is because the BSA kept records as well as they did to insure they were never able to become a leader in the organization again. Every leader is required to take youth protection training, pass a back ground check and abide by our barriers to abuse policy. Additionally our scouts are taught how to recognize abuse both on line and in person and report it as part of the program

Girls are required to have troops that are separate from the guys, so me and my friends weren’t thrown into the middle of a boys troop, but it was definitely awkward at times to be at camps around tons of guys. There were also times when I was annoyed that they let girls into Boy Scouts because I went to a campout one time and the other girls I was with from different troops should NOT have been in scouts. One girl cried all week about her breakup, and refused to run to a girl who was having an asthma attack when she was the one holding her inhaler. Another group of girls let guys into their tent and it was a nightmare. They also had a 13 year old girl in-charge of us, ages 12-16.

Sometimes inappropriately, and it took their attention away from the important things, because that is how the young male brain is wired. I think people who say "what's the problem? It's not harming anyone." Don't understand what it's like being a youth in scouting. Or they have been in the adult world for so long they have forgotten, how much the times have changed.

As a female Boy Scout, i would just like to offer a bit of insight. Boy Scouts is an amazing program. Girl Scours has quite separately evolved into something entirely different and that doesn’t mean it’s bad. But to the average girl, Boy Scouts offers a lot more opportunities to learn, lead and grow, raking that scout law and oath and implementing it in your daily lives. I’ve become a better person because this program and actually walked out of my tomboy phase. I learned the importance of proper uniform and clothing. I learned the importance of EDGE and guiding your patrol to success. Allowing them to eat food instead of you when you accidentally fuck up during shopping. I learned about being prepared and taking accountability. I learned about enduring pain since you’re not the only dealing with shit everyone is, yes I’m talking about the latrines. I’ve bonded so much with my troop over our wild experience that only this program could’ve offered from bopping to K-pop while cleaning the latrines, while learning you can’t make pancakes on a slope, to seeing your friends advance with you, to having those average Saturday existential crisis’ together. Yes men and women are different, yes I know, but honestly when I see other Boy Scouts, girl or boy, i can bond with them. Why? Because we have core values that we live by and are good people. That’s what special about Bot Scouts; it’s an experience, not a program, an experience in which we’re trying to figure things out while the adults watch us. If you fuck up your meals, you deal with consequences, even if that’s bagels for dinner. And about boys and girls. The troops 98% of the time are one-sex only. All-boys or all-girls. There’s only a very tiny percentage of co-ed ones with tons of precautions, usually done because the other one is dying in a last resort. So we usually don’t interact with guys till summer camp. But don’t worry, there idioticness doesn’t decrease with us around, but occasionally we may join in :) (Literally one 12 yr, old girl asked a boy: boyfriend flavored ice-cream or ice-cream flavored boyfriend, guess we’re all idiots in the end :P)

as a former member of BSA, I am deeply concerned and offeneded. With the oligations of abuse, the fact that most boy scouts are hyper-hormonal, and the possible problems that could emerge, this is deeply troubling. This is an insult to me, to my brothers, and especially the founder Baton Powell. Boys need to learn and mature together. We are lost, alone and we need young boys with strong role models to guide them towards manhood, healthy relationships and healthy lifestyles.

I've been in scouting all my life and it was always a such a positive group to be. The scout master and your parents would always be involved in your development in so many new skills and I've been on so many outings where i would just think "wow I would have never done something like this if i wasn't in my troop". When Brett was talking about how hard times create strong men I thought about how even though we live in a time of peace BSA has always taught us to push ourselves towards a goal that seems close to impossible. Now I stand at the end of my path to eagle and I get to reflect on all the mountains I've climbed; the merit badges, the scoutmaster interviews, the board interviews, the actual mountains I've climbed, the 50 mile canon trip, and so many more things that I've overcome. The path was rough but now I feel that I truly am prepared to overcome any hardships in my life. It so sad to see this organization that I've so dedicated myself to crumble to something as stupid as this. I 100% agree that BSA needs to take a long look at themselves and to take an even longer look at what they once use to stand for. For all the positive things that's come into my life because of BSA I don't want it to disappear and I wish for others to experience what I had experienced because it truly does make an impact that will last a life time. Getting Eagle is no joke but now it seems that it might as well be one.

I'm 15 and heavily involved in Trail Life USA. It's a scouting program that actually cares about traditional values. American Heritage Girls is a sister program for girls that is pretty much the exact same thing, but will prepare young women as opposed to young men. Churches that have one often have the other, they will meet on the same night, at the same time, share courts of honor, it works fine. These cowards just need to accept the fact that young men and young women need different training to turn into half decent adults. I guess that's where the leaders of "sCoUtInG USA" were failed in their upbringing. Edit: I made this comment before I finished the video, I didn't realize that Brett mentioned Trail Life at the end of the video. I guess this will at least provide a little bit more info about it.

I’m in American Heritage Girls and it is AMAZING, currently in my final stages of the Stars & Stripes award. The awesome thing about AHG is that we do all the outdoor things, camping, I’ve done survival nights, first aid, orienteering, but also done badges about my identity in christ and how to cook and do cake decorating. I’ve been on leadership team for 6 years, even becoming senior girl lead. It’s an amazing space and I honestly feel like it’s more well rounded than girl scouts, I have made so many lifelong friends and it has made a significant impact on my life. My brother is also in Trail Life and it’s great too! Highly recommend these programs if you have kids.

As a Boy Scout I would like to say since girls have joined Boy Scouts and made their own “girl troops” so many things have been put in place to protect girls in scouting. As an example a male scout or scout leader can not accompany a female scout unless a non related adult is there as well. These rules would not have and should not have been put in place if gender roles had just stayed the same and people left scouting alone.

I and my father both donated to the boy scouts for over 15 years, every year faithfully. We both cancelled that today. I called first and let them have it over the phone as i told them to immediately cancel my yearly donation amount, then my dad did the same. We also told them to wipe our names from any fundraising and not to email us of call us ever again. The guy on the phone said they were getting thousands of calls like ours and he said he was planning to quit at the end of this month too. This is sickening. We have to stop letting the left destroy and feminize our young boys, they are killing them!

Family guy, army vet and a good Christian man. He quit being a scout master himself about 5 years after my son quit attending. He didn't like the direction it was going and attendance had dropped to the point it wasn't worth it for him, plus his own sons, like mine had outgrown being a scout. As a guy who joined the program of Boy Scouts of America, almost eagle, I will leave the program of “Scouting America.” It is so so dumb and the restrictions are honestly very annoying. They should have changed Girl Scouts if they wanted to do what we do so badly. I’m taking a leadership training through scouts and a couple girls are in as well. One of them told us that they’re talking to the girls so much is because they’re scared someone is gonna r them. It just crosses the line on so many levels. If you can’t trust us to even work together then you need a separate entity all together. This is bs. Edit: not leaving before eagle, gonna get it. But when I age out it will not be the same organization I joined… I remember literally chanting “Boy Scouts” at summer camp and now they don’t even say it.

In the UK, girls were able to join the scouts way back in the early 1990s. We had two girls in our troop, plus a female leader. Yes, they got to stay in a caravan on the camping trip, rather than a tent, but they did everything else the same. In the US it's really just a matter of the name.

I’m in a Boy Scout troop with a pretty conservative Scout leader (FYI, he never shares his beliefs, but you could tell he is one), he said he would never make any changes to our troop if we were forced to.

I am a girl who is in an all girls "boy scout" troop. I left girl scouts because I felt like it wasn't adventurous enough. When I was in my girl scouts we made bracelets. I am not saying girl scouts are not adventurous I just got stuck with a bad girl scout troop. Now in "boy" scouts I am learning much more than I ever have. Although the name change is extra, I do love having the choice to join the different troops that let me have adaptability to the amount of adventure I want to take on. Also a plus is that I can become an Eagle Scout as a girl. :)

I think it is just an issue for tomboys. I like Brett was a major tomboy who was jealous of my brother going camping and such with his boy scout troop. I asked to join Girl Scouts, but my mom told me they were not the same, and I was shattered. Crafts and cookies were just not my interests, but I survived and grew up without scouts just fine!

This is not only my favorite comment section video ever (which is saying a lot, I love a lot of Brett's videos) this video is also the most relatable. The boy scout troop that I worked with for the first 4 years of my career turned out to be terrible, and I had to endure the change of allowing girls to do scouts, which actually wasn't that bad at all and I was lucky enough to befriend a few of them, so it could have gone a lot worse. I also had to switch to a completely different troop just to earn my eagle, which I gave full detail on in a song I wrote, so I won't do it here. But me and lot of others know firsthand the BS that scouting has turned into, and I hope and pray for all the other existing organizations in the world that are fostering the care, building, and growth of good young men. And yes, girl scout organizations can fix themselves to make it more adventurous and entertaining for girls. It's not that hard.
