Black Swan is them talking about fearing of losing their passion in music, fearing that one day music doesn't resonate to them anymore. They don't want to lose that passion. For example, dancers have "their first death" when they stop dancing with the same love and passion that they did before and a singer dies when the sounds of a song no longer cause them any feelings There is a phrase i read somewhere (don't remember) that says :'a dancer dies twice... Once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the most painful.' Rm wrote this song and expressed that he cried in the studio while writing this.. This is masterpiece ✨ Thanks for reacting. 💜

The quote is by Martha Graham, one of the most influential contemporary dancers of the 20th century. She was also a choreographer and teacher. Although she died over 30 years ago, when you see Jimin or Taemin dance you’re seeing her legacy, so it’s all the more poignant that BTS used her words to inspire this song.

This song has an orchestral version with beautiful contemporary dance performed to it, then there are several versions from different concerts and awards - MMA 2020 version, permission to dance concert version, live performances on Fallon (twice in different settings) - feel free to dive in,even if on your own 😊

Hi ! Something important about that beautiful song we discovered 4 years ago ( 4 what ???) The subject is roughly : they are afraid of losing their passion for music and inspiration, “ that would be my first death, I’ve been always afraid of” says Yoongi, and Namjoon sings “ what if the moment’s right now, right now” We didn’t think a lot of this 4 years ago…. But in their 2022 festa, they announced their “ hiatus”, trying solo albums, (non said : before military enlistment) and they clearly told us that when this album came out, in beginning of 2020, they had wanted to make a break, after the following tour, they were burnt, inspiration lacking (and then covid, tour cancelled, they made songs to hype us, they remained here for us…) See ? It was the “moment right now, right now” and we didn’t know !!! Hearing black swan after their explanation in June 2022 was so emotional for me This song, and MV, IS art… you’re right

Originally, I wished the song had a bridge too but when you think about the lyrical content and theme of the song - being stuck in the deepest depths of your mind and not being able to get out. The fact that the song starts the way it ends and always stays at the same level sort of parallels that mental state pretty well.

I love the song and feel this one really deserved a Grammy nod, as you noted, it's art. This song has a lot of meaning for me because I am an artist. I have gone through periods where I have felt empty and uninspired, a loss with much uncertainty. Butterfly has some lovely guitar. I love Mikrokosmos. Permission to Dance was one of the cheery songs toward end of pandemic.

1:33 haha this song has so much meaning. First is the Black Swan (dance but also something that happens that shouldn’t). They’re singing about their fear of loss of passion for music (Margaret Graham quote). But also tying in concepts from Map of the Soul (shadow/ego/persona). You’re right though, total art.

Black Swan is about the fear of them losing their passion for their art eg Song Writing, Composing, Producing, Rapping, Singing, Dancing even going up on stage. The Shadow that falls down to nothing at the end is that fear being conquered. It's in the form of the 'Shadow' which is part of Jungian Psychology along with Ego and Persona. The Shadow being the part where out dark thoughts, fears reside in our heads. It's also based on a very famous quote by the famous Dancer Martha Graham 'A Dancer dies twice, first when they stop dancing this is the most pain death'. Jimin who was dancing at the beginning in white is the member who is the Contemporary Dancer in fact he was the top student of his class top student of the whole Busan School of Arts. He also a hip hop dancer as well so he does the two completely different styles and manages to combine them at time's as well.

@@compactrhythm they often combine traditional instruments with modern ones, to great effect, as you’ll discover when you get around to ‘Idol’ or Yoongi/Agust D’s ‘Daechwita’ and ‘Haegeum’. Their concert sound with a live band is usually rockier than the studio versions.

Black Swan is a B-side with a music video. Map of the Soul: 7's (the album the song is from) title track is actually ON. The difference is that the title track is used to promote the album and it qualifies for music shows and such.

May I say, I just love "real" musicians reacting to BTS' music! I truly appreciate your genuine reaction to their musicality which is so refreshing. Of course they are super talented dancers/singers and they are not bad on the eyes 😅 but not many comment on the instrumentation. They are real artists and it is a joy to watch other artists like yourself appreciate them. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for your next one!

Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. Umm, it's not a guitar at the start. It's a traditional Korean instrument. We like pausing, we like rewinding and we like long videos. As long as the reaction is honest ur good. =0p This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” Now with the band on a break from group work and focusing more on solo projects (solo albums). We know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. I hope u watch all the performances for this song. =0] RUN BTS song next no MV but there is dance practice. Film Out pls too its an OST there is an MV. Stay safe. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜 Jen W said on 6/7/22 Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence. Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top. Shadow/mirror images - self reflection. Black Swan: Mainly written by RM, the one you like, is about their fears of losing all passion for music, either writing it or performing on stage. It's also based on a quote by Martha Graham who was an important figure in the world of modern dance, "A dancer dies twice. Once when they stop dancing and this death is more painful." They've been doing this for a long time now and for some of them it's all they've ever done from a young age but realized music is their life. MsBeatrice_81 said on 3/19/22 Fun fact: Before BTS began doing it, it wasn't normal at all for Korean idol groups to release songs with deeper meanings, discuss serious topics in their songs, acknowledge issues of vulnerability like burnout, depression or mental illness. It wasn't normal for idols to open up about their personal troubles at all. In fact, doing so got some idols thrown out of their companies. It was also not normal or common to have a running storyline/theme that is carried through multiple albums and/or MVs and songs. But BTS did it all so successfully, and broke those stigmas, to the point that now many other Korean idol groups have started trying to do those things, with varying degrees of sincerity and success. This song, its lyrics and MV are part of the "Shadow" portion of BTS's Map of the Soul era, in which they released albums and songs based on Carl Jung's theories regarding the Persona, Shadow, and Ego. This track is an exploration of their "shadow" selves' fear that they may someday lose their passion for their art - they ask if perhaps they are already losing it- and they wonder what comes after that "first death" of the loss of passion. In the end, they continue to fight for their passion and their art, claiming they won't be swept away by these fears again. I would encourage you to think about how counter-cultural BTS is being in songs like this: Not only are they dealing with topics that were taboo only a few years ago, but they're being unbelievably personally vulnerable, sincere and open. This is why we love them so much, and I'm sure you will, too! 💜 Example: A couple of weeks ago Jimmy Fallon had BTS on his late night show. They performed a song called Idol at This Idol performance at Gyeongbokgung Palace as a background and wearing hanboks. There are so many amazing location Rich with Ancient history. Here is a link to the idol performance, so you can see the background visual of the palace. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4x6zcyGfrvMoLw.html Sariel said on 3/1/22 The string instrument used is the Gayageum, a Korean zither.

Ah, this is 'that' song for me. October 2020. The one I watched like 😮😯🥺 The one I declared, 'That was PURE ART!' to. The one that made me say aloud, to the screen, "That's it: I'm in. I am going to be an ARMY." I had actually been struggling with loss of inspiration, the pandemic had burned out my desire and ability to write, and I had started to think I had lost that part of myself. This song was a 'They get it, they really get it' moment, and it gave me the hope that maybe I could work past the burnout and find my inspiration again, like they did. It's experiences like this that have senior ARMYs comforting newcomers with the remark, "Don't worry about coming in late; you find BTS when you need them."

This is from Map of the Soul album. It deals with the "map of the soul" actually and the 3 rappers have songs on the album you could react to. RM does Intro: Persona (the persona being what we portray to people and what we want them to see). Suga does Interlude: Shadow (the part of us that is our fears and apprehensions, typically buried within). JHope does Outro: Ego (our true self and how we actually perceive ourselves). This song (Black Swan) brought back the Shadow theme. You can see at the beginning, the Shadow has taken over, is larger than they are and moves on its own as they sing about their fear of losing their love of creating music and how that would be their first death (like in the Black Swan ballet where the dancer's fear is not being able to dance). As this song progresses, you see the shadow slowly returning to the same size (when Yoongi sings about seeing himself) and then ultimately, the shadow shrinks and is buried back inside (the last scene with JK on the balcony). There is a lot more to the video (see the explanation vid) but that is the general gist. When we say they write with depth... this is an example of what we mean. I still would like to recommend Born Singer. They wrote it in 2013 shortly after debut - on the beat of JCole's Born Singer. This is the stage mix performance where their early performance is juxtaposed with one they did 5 years later. It gives an example of their mindset but also another example of how they mix rap with vocals. JCole gave them permission to include the reworked song on their Anthology album in 2022. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGmLrrSQfbzgdbg.htmlsi=kxjkDntIZn_VJOUp

I’d love to see you do more of the videos in the BU. Both I Need U and Fake Love were in it, so it’s more like some images in the videos will go over your head, but there’s multiple layers of meaning, so you’ll still understand whatever layers you’re at. XCeleste’s summary of the storyline is there for whenever you’re ready for it. Bookish Theories has a good explanation of Black Swan. From Map of the Soul I also recommend Persona, Shadow, and Ego with the DKDKTV explanation videos. There’s so much Carl Jung in their work that it’s worth knowing the basics through these explanations, and then you’ll just see an MV like Black Swan and get it. I love this song. Whenever I’ve been burnt out or lose motivation I think about RM’s lyric, “But what if the moment is right now.” I also highly recommend their MMA 2019 performance. It will be 🤯. Remember that the channel Enjoy BTS More has subtitled versions of live performances and videos that don’t have English CC. I look forward to all of your reactions! 💜

This song came out and this is a kpop thing it is a prealbum video. A way to introduce the album of "7". Black Swan came out on January 17, 2020 it came out a month before ON which came out of February 27, 2020. On January 15, 2020 a contemporary film came out introduce by HYBE called Black Swan Art Film by MN Dance Company. It was a surprise to everyone beautiful dancing but what does that have to do with HYBE and BTS, well two days later we found out with the song "Black Swan" in video with BTS. It is not "only" a great song but a beautiful piece of music and if you want to hear the music in synphonic melody I suggest you listen to the Art Film.

A sample is a literal reuse of a portion of a sound recording in another. It was popular in rap as a method of instilling familiarity when juxtaposed against new material. I am curious what this reactor feels is being sampled here as he used the word sample repeatedly. While all music exists within the context of its antecedents, I am afraid if the word sample is used too loosely it devalues artistic originality. Sampling is a very deliberate act of lifting something from another, not simply composing within existing methodologies to instill a sense of familiarity while composing independently. That said the reaction was pretty good.

The music is great, the beats are great, the singing is great, the rapping is great, the dancing is great, the whole damn performance is always great. When they perform live it is clear that the atmosphere is great too. Have you watched Lie a solo by Jimin? Have you watched any live performances yet? Or as you suggested Life Goes On, a beautiful song for covid times.

Their producers and directors and song writers and concept invisionaires have provided them with a wide venue of unique content. It's never boring. That's for sure. You have about 10 years of content to get through. You do know they are ALL serving their mandatory military requirement to South Korea now. Right? So you have time to catch up. They will all be released in 2025. However, they did say they were going to surprise us with new content. All were created and taped before they left to serve. Enjoy. Oh. And yes I subscribed!

Please increase their size. Because we still like to enjoy the MV with you. But we still don't know Korean. Thank you. Again, you have no idea what "rabbit hole" you've fallen into. I noticed your Beatles T-Shirt. BTS has out sold The Beatles and Everyone. No one can compare to the Beatles and their talented contribution. But now BTS are The Beatles of this generation. There isn't a song I don't like either. But I'm not a rap girl. However, their melodic rap entertwined into their songs is so very unique. I don't really go for their all rap songs. But not too many of them are out there. Except on their own personal dropped mixed tapes which have all set records! Enjoy your journey. Find MrSammyCam, a fellow English reactor. He is quite good.

I just found you just now. (My original comment disappeared.) I found BTS accidentally on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on February 24, 2020. They performed their Live Debut of "On" at Grand Central Station in New York City. I was overwhelmed. I had never heard of them before. There is no official video or NBC clip. But one fan videotaped the performance. So watch and enjoy them at this venue. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oGVoxrCAiaitlZs.htmlsi=9UJO8hFrbZbcBrHD

An important NOTE. They worked so hard to prepare this perfect Stunningly Exquisite performance. They wanted to do well because this song was from their new album "7". This was the beginning of their extensive Worldwide Tour to promote their new album. And I mean Worldwide...every continent. Everything was set and booked. But they were called into a meeting. Their tour was Cancelled. They were beyond shocked. They were devastated! What happened? Look at that date above. The pandemic hit! The World shut down. They promised if they ever got to perform again..."On" was going to be their first song on their set list. More than 2 years later in L.A. they performed it. They didn't know if they could get through it without crying.

That's doesn't sound like a guitar at all it sounds like a classic Harp. Like the one my friend plays. I've heard her play 'Black Swan' on her harp at a funeral of another friend who was a BTS fan and sadly died of cancer recently.
