I'm a 66-year-old male silver ARMY (BTS fan). There are two huge misnomers when people are new to BTS. They're not a boy band in any preconceived connotation of Western boy bands. And their fandom being a bunch of young girls couldn't be further from the truth. Their fan base does range from young teenagers to those of us in our 60s and 70s. Approximately 35% of their fan base are males.

If you liked the guy in the middle, his name is Jungkook and you might like his solo song Standing Next To You. And the guy with the voice you liked is RM. you might like his solo song Wildflower. (I just feel like you were able to identify Suga after watching one solo from him, so maybe after watching those you will know Jungkook and RM as well). But don’t worry or apologize about not knowing the names. It takes everyone a while to be able to do that. There are 7 of them after all. Other group songs that you might like, try: Fake Love, Mic Drop, Fire, Blood Sweat and Tears (these all have music videos, but some of their best songs don’t have MVs) so you can watch a lyric video of Louder than Bombs, and a live performance video (search for one with English subtitles because most performances don’t have closed caption) of Anpanman, Outro:Tear, Pied Piper, Run BTS.

For sure my personal suggestion is checkout one or two of each member's solo first so one you get to tell who is who in a group and more importantly you can easily see their individual style first. Ofcourse if you want to rush in blind and enjoy some chaos which is all good too. Standing next to you and wildflower are excellent choice to start if this the way you want to go Goodluck down the rabbit hole.

BTS are one of the rarest Kpop band that you can claim as "artist". Actually, in general Kpop (idol music) don't write nor produce their own music so majority of kpop acts doesn't sound as genuine. BTS on the otherhand since even before they debuted had helped written & produced their own stuff (except their ENGLISH songs). So don't be surprised that their English songs doesn't have much depth compared to their non-english songs.

  • @rafaelsmith5737

@@compactrhythm understatement? More like an insult. Back then the word "idol" was used to degrade & mock them. BTS, especially RM & Suga had the most hard time experiencing it & BTs were teenagers at that time which is why Suga created "Agust D" persona out of anger. Listen to Agust D's "Agust D". Back then, BTS were an outcast in the Kpop Industry since they aren't really kpop idols since they are more like a hip-hop indie group, & they don't fit South Korea's beauty standard. Basically BTS as a group compared to other kpop groups are considered "ugly". They were even mocked for writing & producing their songs since they say they're too poor to even hire people which is quite true since BTS came from a very small company near bankruptcy. Back then the Kpop Industry is monopolized by 3 big labels that has all power & influence. They manufacture Kpop groups like crazy. & They're the ones giving all negative stereotypes the West has towards Kpop, it has nothing to do with BTS. Anyways, BTS can never compete against the Kpop groups produced by Big 3 since they were heavily pushed/ promoted & designed to be perfect. BTS on the other hand has no industry support, they don't even appear on TV shows & were often cut on broadcast. As a result, they weren't even quite known in Korea. But anyways, despite the Kpop Industry trying to suppress them, BTS still defied all odds & become the biggest boy band in the World (2018) with no English songs.

@@rafaelsmith5737 all of this is true, but don't forget BTS are proud K-Pop Idols. They embrace their K-culture and everything about K-Pop, criticizing honestly what they feel they need to, but also loving what makes them happy and proud about their path and dreams. They made 'IDOL' to express that proud and give to all the people who are xenophobic, racist and mock people in the kpop scene, a huge slap in their faces, because they're proud korean artists. BTS aren't just K-Pop, but it's still part of what they are 😉

@@v.vlenmf05 BTS is 100% Korean without a doubt. In their entire discography they have no English Album & even when they released 3 English songs, the percentage of their English songs compared to their non-english songs is still less than 1%. Which means zero percent, so the hate that BTS got from Kpop fans who claims BTS is "too westernized" or "desperate for Western validation" is pretty strange to me. Black Pink the biggest girl group has one English album & more than 30% of their entire discography is in English, yet I see no one hating on them for being too "westernized".

@@rafaelsmith5737 I totally agree, they don't deserve that stupid narrative that almost everyone wants to make about them. Also THE HYPOCRISY of "kpopers", when K-Pop has always been something westernized, even K- experts in the industry talked about that, how to branch out they started to incorpore more of the western culture or artist that sing in korean would never be global. They criticize BTS, but their fav artists are taking the same path to attempt be the number 1 or to gain more recognition, because it works, especially when the western music industry it's so corrupted and xenophobic, they wouldn't praise or award an international singer if they don't have any English, with luck they have some awards for Latin Music lmaoo Billboard is literally buy for big companys and artist, and I'm not even gonna talk about the Scammys 🙂 How many groups have English songs? or use English to gain audience? To see their discography throughout the ages, you cannot go wrong with their MMA 2019 performance. It was an award show performance that lasted about 40 minutes. Because they thought it was their last awards show before enlisting in the military (before the pandemic screwed everything up), they were showcasing a plethora of their songs. Except for the filler video in between the performance, every snippet of song you hear during that 40 minutes is from their discography -- some of it straight from the track, some of it remixed -- in addition to the several songs they perform. It starts with their school days (hence the outfits) and progresses from there. It starts off with RM rapping live in small room that opens up to the main stage.

It will answer all your questions It will tell you basically everything you need to know, their history from top to bottom, rag to riches story, the members and their contribution to the group and their achievements. Later on, you will realize why they're different from all other kpop groups and why they have totally destroyed the language, age, gender, ethnicity, culture barrier.

"On" is complicated: It has a call-back to their early music like "N.O." - the other MV ends with "No More Dream" (their first song) to "Dream". We are on the "Map of the Soul" so this is applied (Carl) Jungian psychology because to "Love Yourself" you have to "Know Yourself". "On" is pretty much the end of the journey. At that point the "Persona" - how the world sees us - and the knowledge that this is not quiet us - has been explored but also the "Shadow" - our unconsciousness: the part even we can't accept about ourself: fears, angers, insecurity etc. - the stuff that keeps us up at night and can make us react negatively for seemingly no reason. But unfortunately for us the "Shadow" is part of us. So in "On" - during the dance break - the "Shadow" - which was explored in "Black Swan" - is pulled into the consciousness and gets us as close as possible to "true self" or "Ego". It's "insane" to seek out the "pain" of the "shadow" but since it is part of us it is a necessarity to become whole: to know ourself fully. For their first songs I would use the channel 1theK (also better translations for "Fire") since it has good translations that at the beginning are still missing from BTS MVs: - "No More Dream" (debut song from "2 Cool 4 Skool") - "We Are Bullettproof Pt. 2" (from their debut album) - "N.O." (O!RUL8,2?) If you like you can good translations on "doolsetbangtan" with notes. Taylor Mari's Bangtan 7 is also a good intro. bby gang mag has a few good video essays like: - BTS vs. K-pop (has a definetion of what K-pop even is) - BTS: More Than K-pop (why BTS) Boracity magazine is interesting and has very good numbers but has her own way of seeing things - which - fair - everyone has. "The Rise of Bangtan" is full of context, too and explains a lot (the Bonus is funny). You nice! Keep going!

You seem like a genuine person and this was such a fun reaction to watch💜 To help you put faces and names together, I recommend reacting to 'A Guide to BTS: the Bangtan 7' by Taylor Mari on KZread. It seems like a long video but I promise you, it flies by and we'll cheerfully watch the whole thing. It's very well put together and gives a brief history of the group as well as each individual member's role, works, and personality. It will also make it easier for you to decide where to start as far as their music because you'll get to hear little samples of their work and you can note down the ones you fancy for future listening.

Welcome to the purple family. 💜 There is so much content. You will be busy for a while. BTS started as a hip hop group and have evolved over the years to encompass all different genres. RM - BTS’ leader and main rapper. He is the youngest songwriter with the most songwriting credits in KOMCA (Korean music licencing agency). He started as an underground rapper. His words are poetry. He’s super intelligent and the only BTS member fluent in the English language. SUGA (aka Agust D) - lead rapper. He produces a lot of BTS tracks and is so prolific as a producer he even writes and produces for other artists. Aggressive in his raps. Fire! 🔥 Also started as an underground rapper. Jhope - lead rapper. was originally a dancer in a street crew and learned how to rap after joining BigHit Entertainment. He has a really smooth flow and style when he raps and has bucketloads of swag. Jin - eldest member and vocalist. Often characterised as having a Silver Voice. His nickname is Worldwide Handsome. Jimin - vocalist. He studied contemporary dance before joining BigHit. Has the voice of an angel and is known for his falsetto. V - vocalist. Baritone. His voice sounds like caramel & velvet. Very sultry. He loves jazz and incorporates it into his solo work. Plays the saxophone and trumpet. Jungkook - main vocalist. Youngest member of BTS. Also known as the “Golden Maknae” which means golden youngest. Earned the nickname because he’s good at absolutely everything. He’s the one who sang the bridge with the high notes in ON. You called him cute. Each member has solo work to check out. They each have a particular strength and together they are nothing short of a supergroup. I hope you continue to explore them and I will be keeping up with your journey. Please reach out to ARMY if you have questions. We love to help! 💜

I don’t think it matters what order you go in, in terms of how you listen to their music. I like all their albums, but was DEFINITELY surprised with their older music (i became an army in 2018) Anyways, I also really recommend checking out their dance practices, live performances, and music videos. I know its a lot lol, but thats how you get the full experience. Welcome down the rabbit hole hahah Loved your reaction!!💜

I clicked this reaction for no reason even though I have a whole playlist of videos of reactors to go and look into. I loved your vibe, of course you have a pass to pause! Some people might still give you some shit for it, but seriously when someone pauses to appreciate either the music and lyrics and try to digest it, it really makes me respect them for posting and making reactions. Especially for music that is in a different language. It takes me a few listens to really digest even music that's in English. (Sadly yes....we know Oli London) Lmao, your little editor voice insert made me laugh. On the different genres of music, it's fun cause there's actually flow charts for things like 'here's 5 songs to start' and then you pick which one you like and it'll lead to more songs with similar vibes. I'm glad you overcame your preconceived notions and decided to give them a listen after all!

He's been with BTS since their debut; it's kind of really cool to think that it's not just BTS that has grown over the last 10 years but also Pdogg; his music is totally different from what it was at the beginning, and I love it. We have examples of K-pop producers being super easy to identify cause the music they do is so similar throughout the years, but not Pdogg.

    • Kinetic: means relating to or resulting from motion. • Manifesto: is a published declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer • Come Prima: is used as a direction in music meaning “in the same manner as the first time”. This is a double entendre, also meaning that BTS haven’t changed as people or artists since the beginning. (ON is the reverse of N.O., one of their first songs as a group in 2013. BTS thought of ON as kind of a sequel to N.O.) N.O. stood for No Offense and it was basically saying No to Korea’s cultural norm of maniacal focus on school, studying & making good grades which was negatively impacting its youth. These guys said NO, they weren’t going to live someone else’s dream. The fear of charting a different course for their lives and the pain they’ve gone through together to become successful artists became motivational for them. They were on their own path from the beginning “in the same manner as the first time”.

ARMYs have the longest attention spans. We expect you to pause to comment. After all you’re a reactor so we expect you to react as you go along. We’ll happily watch for hour after hour. Pdogg is a producer at Hybe, their agency. This mv was filmed at the Sepulveda Dam in Los Angeles. The dancers are from, The Lab, and the choreographer, Sienna Lalau, is in the centre at the beginning. She was just 19 at the time and she really put the boys through some hard choreo. They were wiped by the end. It’s a proper marching band playing. The one playing on the recording is different to the one playing on this mv. It was filmed in high temperatures so not an easy shoot at all. There is another totally different mv to this one. I didn’t find BTS when I needed them. I found them through a recommendation by an author friend who writes a series of books where some of the characters are Korean. I certainly need them now, LOL. BTW, if you haven’t got into K-Drama yet you might want to start with Hwarang which has our, V, playing one of the main parts. He does a great job in his first, and as yet, only rôle.

I dunno if ARMY have already suggested this but if ur struggling to watch the video and read the lyrics. Other reactors have found watching a lyric video before the mv has helped. That way you can watch the mv without distraction? Or the other way round? Or just watch the same mv twice 😅 once to watch and once to read. Lyrics are very important to BTS they all have a hand in writing for the their songs so we love appreciation shown to their performance as well as the lyrics. Enjoy your fall down the rabbit hole 💜🇬🇧

Thank you for having so much fun at discovering BTS, and sharing it. I too had similar reactions when they changed rhythm the first time I listened to it because I was not watching the video, thinking maybe the cat touched my mobile and switched song. So I restarted and watched... and was blown away by the choreography. Now I love that they often do that, giving a space for their choreography in between vocals or rap: their songs are aimed at being a wholistic performance for ears, heart, mind and eyes. The lyrics have usually multiple possible meanings and are part of an arc within their albums, plus "stories" sometimes through the MV. It's layered artistry and I love that. Some songs I did not resonate to initially eg rap but reading the meaningful lyrics and added with some top vocals got me to change my mind and grow into new genres, which is fantastic (Wildflower from RM is pure poetry, Suga is so deep and personal, etc). Stop often, read lyrics ahead, or stop and read during the song, rewind, listen a 2nd time: DO YOU! Relax, enjoy. I won't recommend titles, only to keep digging as there is a lot of variety so it's ok not to like something and be blown away by another.

RM, Suga/ aka Agust D and J Hope BTSs rap line all worked on ON plus input from people like PDog. One of the great things BTS does so well is work collaboratively with each other and others.. .. Start with the most entertaining TAYLOR MARI GUIDE TO THE BANGTAN 7. Not only will you learn to recognise who is who I guarantee smiles and laughs at these genuinely naturally funny guys together over 12 years now and lived together 8 of those. It shows why they work rather than telling you., and the culture of excellence that created their improbable rags to riches rise to world domination. .45 minute that seems like 15. Plus snippets of songs that will give us a better idea which BTS rabbit holes to send you done. They have one of the most massive and diverse discographies in the business.

Rewind it a bit and we’re about to go into a DANCE BREAK….lol TBH it was a happy accident I got turned on to their music. Whole world shut down, we’re all watching, waiting, wondering if it would ever be the safe. I was going thru that, 1,500 miles away from my kids and out of the blue was diagnosed w stage 4 cancer. One day up pops a song “Life Goes On”. I listened to it a few times and finally turned on CC bc idk Korean. I found comfort in it bc I suddenly didn’t feel as isolated. So I watched quite a few videos and then started the deep dive. Every time I thought I knew which member was who they had a different hair color. I finally figured it out and yes, pretty much all their videos have a message. You can catch up w that last. The other video of “On” is awesome too. Might give u a bit of context. Enjoy and take your time. Don’t ever apologize for rewinding. We’ve all done it thousands of times. Welcome to BTS. We’re always happy and grateful you watch! 💜ARMY I’m 😉
