Thanks for a fun reaction! I've been really enjoying your sincere thoughts and the extra steps you take to understand the music. Thank you! I just wanted to share that, as a Korean, I took A LOT of meaning from this song. This song came out in 2017, right when Korea was dealing with an extremely corrupt government and many people were taking to the streets to protest various injustices. So to hear these lyrics to never give up the fight was moving. The lines "If you can't fly, then run; If you can't run, then walk; If you can't walk, then crawl" are a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. and were so beautiful interwoven into this song. Also, this came out together with Spring Day, which is truly a masterpiece. After you listen to Spring Day and also watch the explanation video by Italian ARMY (a must!), you might try and listen to Not Today again and I think the experience will be different. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to more videos!

You can watch any of the MV without worrying about spoiling the BU and the MV are great on their own as well. It’s so intricate and convoluted with other media to fill the gaps in the MV’s that a lot of new ARMY wait a while to go back and watch the actual BU content.

100% agree. It drives me crazy when people tell reactors (or anyone else) not to watch something "because it's a part of the BU," as if most of the BU wasn't even noticeable to the uninitiated, or that you can't just listen to and love the music. There are ARMY who never actually dive into the BU to understand everything.

Bottom line, I prefer the reality-meaning of the songs to the story-meaning. I feel a little bad about it because they put so much effort to drop the hints and clues and references... but I find that kind of intricacy more frustrating than intriguing.

@@compactrhythm Yes, the Bangtan Universe's story involves a great deal of trying to undo the past, by going back in time and changing self or others' actions. Only one of the characters is given that ability, though, and frankly, it collapses into as big a mess as you'd expect anyone but The Doctor to make of it. But not a fun mess; a very dark, haunted and failure-plagued mess of a time muddle. Lots of self-inflicted violence, to be blunt. Some people get into this story not realizing that it's 100% fictional. The characters have very troubled pasts. Bangtan does not have these troubled pasts, they just play out the parts of the characters... who are named after them, which is what really clouds the issue. It's a very weird mix of self-insert story and real-person fiction; I have never approved of either of those methods of storytelling, so it's a no-go for me. But there's still plenty to be interested in 'on the surface', as it were.

Since you are just starting your BTS journey, I would recommend watching their MVs without thinking about the storyline just yet. Each MV is great on its own. You can always dive into the storyline later. I'm really enjoying your reactions! And yes....please watch the MV of Not Today as well. The song and choreography is amazing (of course), but the MV has some powerful visuals.

Don't worry about the story line if you're not interested. You can still watch the MVs anyway! Blood Sweat and Tears is SO good you've got to react to it :)

But for evolution of the group, I feel that too much has been skipped over before that though; I would suggest first going back for Just One Day or Butterfly, then Fire and Young Forever if wanting to wait until tackling the storyline properly.

This was not the official music video. This is more of a performance video. The visuals and videography of the official music video is superb and also different from anything you've watched so far. I recommend you take a second look and react to that for us. Actually the lyrics are quite deep. This is not just a we're cool kind of song. This is about not getting beat down by society, about not giving in to the norm. It's about fighting through diversity and not letting it get the better of you. FYI All seven members write and produce.

Yeah, that comment from him was an "I don't see anything deep so there must not be anything deep" kind of comment. With BTS, very little of the intended meaning is only at surface level.

His remark about writing was, I think, that he was aware from watching the guide that they didn't all start out as songwriters. But yeah, since on the previous album they'd all had input into their solo songs, they all were at various stages of becoming songwriters.

Actually, there is depth which may be more apparent to a Korean than a Westerner. Much Like Dope BTS compares their journey of hard work and persistent attacks to the journey of Korean youth. Young people were facing ridicule as a "giving up generation" unable to meet the expectations of their elders. Their efforts and desires were not being recognized and society had a tendency to minimize their individual dreams for the future. A conformist path was being emphasized. Dope called on youth not to give up hope, particularly in RM's verse. Not Today says "today we fight". BTS being an outsider has to fight for dignity and respect. BTS tells youth even if you have to crawl, do the same. Not Today is an anthem. Anthems by nature have deep purpose.

you don't need to follow the Story line to enjoy the Music Videos, I have watched since 2017 and I haven't connected the story line yet and I enjoy every MV anyway. so just what ever you want and in your own pace.

No, this wasn't dance practice; it was a choreography or performance version since they were in costume at the official MV location. Most K-pop groups have performance video versions for songs where they want to let people see the full choreography as it might appear in a live show.

This song is how I made it through 2020-2022, basically listened to this song every day while going through just… soooooo much all at once. Long covid, multiple other health issues, separation and divorce, as well as just the whole world being on fire. It’s a common thing to hear that people find BTS when they need to, and that BTS music has helped so many of us during our worst moments. You never know what song will be The One for someone, but this is mine. I fully believe that without this song - I’d still be here, I was really careful with my mental health. But I’d just have SURVIVED instead of FOUGHT. This song helped me not only hang on during some terrible things, but to have the motivation to grab ahold of all the situations and fight to get to the best outcome possible. I came out better off than I was when I went into 2020. And this is a huge part of that.

If you know BTS, you can't get out of it. BTS' live performance is really amazing. I strongly recommend 2019 MAMA Performance and Tiny Desk Live. And I think it'd be great if each member performed solo ^^

Not Today was my first BTS MV I saw, back in late Feb 2017. I have a soft spot for the original video and Jimin's pink hair. You might watch the OFFICIAL MV as well. The setting is fantastic.

Dw about the storyline, it's made for rocket scientists and is something you can go back to much later in your journey. You should def watch the MV's for I Need you and Blood, sweat and tears, its the 2 MV's that started the phenomenon that is now the global group BTS. The MV's are very cool and you see a big change in style!

Quite a few new reactors have been getting sidetracked by the solo projects, understandably as there's been a steady stream of these in the absence of new group songs. It would be more refreshing to see a new ARMY discover how BTS evolved as a group, as most are watching the same few MVs with no awareness of the depth and richness of BTS's discography. I mean, for my own journey of discovery five years ago, I was surprised to see a Western article titled BTS's top 50 songs - like, this group I'd only just heard of had enough songs for a music journalist to list their top 50???

I mean, there IS a story line, but I don't think their title songs would be unwatchable if you didn't know what was going on. Though small things you would be able to be like 'hey, didn't we see something like this in x video?' But there are supplemental videos that would definitely feel like you missed something if you went and watched them with no context. It's been really entertaining seeing you come in skeptical and to see your enthusiasm grow over the past few videos. I love seeing the small smile creep onto your face as you're starting to really vibe with a verse or section of a song. I'm surprised you stopped yourself from watching it! Enjoying your reactions, although I think it would have been better to watch the official MV as it's so much more impactful. Please do watch it, and show us your reaction. Since you like Japanese music, another approach you could try is checking out BTS's Japanese releases. There are some great intro tracks from their Japanese albums, some Japanese versions of their popular songs with interestingly different videos, and some of their best songs are Japanese only. In terms of BTS evolution, you've already missed a huge chunk, and somehow the vids you've seen all tend to have similar dark indoor settings that lack the cinematic and aesthetic qualities of their best MVs. If you want to get a better grasp of BTS's sheer versatility, I would suggest going back and reacting to: *N.O. (MV has a different style from what you've seen so far) *Just One Day (r&b crooner that shows off their lighter, playful side - especially if you then watch the dance practice, both in the same reaction would be great) *Boy in Luv (beginning of the dramatic style of MV that really takes off with I Need U) *Intro: What Am I to You (from Dark & Wild album; it's got a beautiful visualiser video and RM really delivers!) *I Need U (their first weekly number one, and the song that saved them from having to disband) *Intro: Nevermind (trailer for HYYH pt2, again a great visualiser MV and Suga really brings it!) *Run (sequal to I Need U) *Fire (a party banger and nice segue from Dope) *Butterfly (really captures the HYYH vibe) *Young Forever (underrated, really shows vocal evolution and also a fittingly ethereal close to the HYYH era) *Intro: Boy Meets Evil (intro to Wings era, about worldly temptations; should appeal to your metalhead leanings) *Blood, Sweat and Tears (title track for Wings era, about the dark side of young adulthood - the song and MV have rich literary symbolism) *Spring Day (stunning follow-up release to BS&T; deeply poignant and has remained in the Korean charts ever since, as it has particular resonance there) *Not Today official MV (if you haven't already reacted to it) *Intro: Serendipity (Jimin's intro to the new Love Yourself trilogy era) *DNA (title track for the upbeat change of mood) *Mic Drop (it's great, but been reacted to death by newbie reactors, which is why it's better to wait until you've seen what came before) *Intro: Singularity (V introduces the darker side of the era on the LY: Tear album) I have to go now, will add more to this comment later. I notice that the MV doesn't start like that it starts with them running up the quarry dust road so I'm not sure if you've edited it or got hold of one that someone has altered. The MV doesn't have Deeper and Better on it either. Did you use their official KZread Channel either HYBE LABEL or BantangTV?
