No, I don't believe it left the factory that way. For someone to play the guitar enough to need a refret it would have much more body wear. What I think is that is was a beat up guitar that needed a refret and a quick wet-sand and topcoat turned into modification of the first fret inlay and the headstock overlay. Not to mention those modifications are easy if you're already wet-sanding the instrument for a fresh topcoat. I'd go so far as to question if Gibson would even build a Standard with the split diamond headstock inlay and the first fret trapezoid. For that price I'd still play happily play it and enjoy it, I just don't think it is all factory.

I think the first fret marker and headstock inlay are factory original. I play guitar a lot, and pickups, knobs, nuts, and refret are all things I would do to a player guitar. I would never add inlays or change a headstock. Like why would you do that?

I'm thinking that the fret job on that elegant was done because some one just wanted different fret wire, the rest of the guitar doesn't show wear consistent with wearing the frets down.

I had this guitar on my watch list on Ebay and saw this morning it was unsold and not listed anymore. I was too scared to pull the trigger because of the mods and first fret inlay. The shops actual website showed a bunch more pictures then they had on Reverb with the pickups taken out showing the Slash logo on the back of them.

i would venture to guess the CST on the COA stands for Custom, as in Les Paul Custom, and if you were to mash an elegant and a LP custom together this is kind of what one would think they would get... 1st fret marker, all be it not the block like a custom, however this is an Elegant. And if it is an elegant with some LP custom-like appointments that are being hinted to, this would make sense along with the split diamond headstock inlay. Sure it doesnt have the correct LP Custom Binding or Fret Markers, i just feel like they were pulling certain influences from the LP Custom on this build, Just my thoughts.

I am thankful that Troggs does the videos and welcome his expertise on Gibson's, but I just feel lost... I don't mind Gibson guitars, but it seems like every video contains mostly boring paint/stain jobs, they cost over $2k (or well over that). Maybe lost isn't the right word, but perhaps I just can't get into a guitar that I would never own or could afford. I know he's a collector, but I thoroughly enjoy the "Common-man" import guitars. Not only do they typically have unique finish options, but at the end of the video I often say "Man I loved that guitar, got to get me one of those!" ..and I could because they are in my budget. I'm probably in the minority here and assure you I'm not trying to ruffle feathers, just venting to no one I guess. 🤷

It's funny that Trogley points out the grammar mistake, "Slash installed" pickups when Trolley says every episode, "Let's take an indvidual look at it's parts and specs" instead of "Let's take a look at it's individual parts and specs". One means an individual or person is looking at the parts and specs, which is a given, the other means the parts and specs are unique to the individusl example he's reviewing. But then, I may be wrong, I was a majored in Sociology not English.☺☺☺. Plus I wouldn't want him to change this phrase after hearing so many times now.

As far as the Les Paul headstock inlay is concerned, without a black re-spray, wouldn't there be some of the Les Paul Special logo that would be evident on the black wood area that the diamond inlay doesn't cover? And the batwing pickguard has one screw in the middle of the very sharp point. Wouldn't the two screw holes of an "original style" be evident on each side of that sharp point if it were a later upgrade or change?

The diamond headstock inlay on the LP Elegant looks smaller than it should be on a Gibson; it looks like the size found on Epiphone Les Paul Customs and the Chibsons made in former Epiphone factories. You can see the size difference at 2:20 in the video. I'm pretty sure it's not original to the guitar; if it is it's the first Gibson with that size of diamond that I've seen!

What is so interesting about your business is that every single guitar has a very unique story and life. I mean, people refret their guitars, but what if the person died or got locked up or just went broke during the refret, and they hear about it and decide not to put in any more time on a guitar they are not getting paid for, so they DON'T scallop the edges of the new frets? Oh, the possibillities! Love your channel and the Trogly vibe. You are an encyclopedia. Eh, more of a fender man meself anyway..

The problem is there's no way to know if a guitar is authentic, they didn't use anti-counterfeiting measures. If you find two with the same serial number you know at least one must be fake. Aside from that, how could you know? It's easy to buy guitar body blanks. I saw one Les Paul kit that had highly flamed top just like a Snakepit. It's almost like they were selling them specifically to make fake Shakepits, they even showed it with red finish. You can also buy control kits that are just like vintage originals and fake vintage pickups are easy to get. You could fairly easily make a fake vintage guitar, even crackle the finish by freezing it or fade it with UV lamps.

There may be a form of synergy to having a 13-year-old rocking a $13,000 guitar. I still think it's kind of excessive though. Korea construct A-line from my favorite sitcom, "no 13-year-old boy should have a $13,000 guitar unless he is onstage with his four brothers."

I feel the first fret inlay could be original, just custom ordered but was a custom shop guitar that was worn enough that they needed a refret along with some personal mods. I know some people would just do a refret right out of the gate anyways to custom shops. Who knows though, especially since it’s a used guitar with tons of mods to it. also, the headstock inlay seems like too much work for someone to replace in all honesty, if i was them i’d know that paying someone to do it would be a lot, and doing it myself would be a pain in the ass. So it most likely came that way from the factory.

If they put in all that work, the price actually kinda seems fair even for a fancied up Standard. Or could be a real custom shop. Who knows 😂😂

It's nice enough to buy it. Come on man, you could sell it off if it didnt live up to your standards of collectibility. It's a very nice guitar, I imagine that price tag is at least fair. It would be a fun review and document.

They must of ran out of abalone for the Gibson logo and put mother of pearl??? Don’t understand that move !!! That’s the only thing that makes me wonder?? Inconsistent but that usually is how Gibson was in the 90’s compared to today I guess

I bought Bourgeois Country Boy from Lovies on Reverb. It was described as having an Adirondack top. I got the serial number as described, but the guitar clearly says Sitka on the label. I didn't notice until months later, and I love the guitar, so I've done nothing to address it. I chalk it up to the guy being lazy about the descriptions, and employs copy & paste, without replacing key words. Look at a sample of his listings. Your video has me irritated about it.

The sellers on reverb know what they are selling. If that would be real, one of the kind custom without any issues, the price would be double.

To people who collect and don’t play and have lots of money that guitar may be worth $5,000 or $6,000. But I’m a player and I buy guitars to play. I own Les Pauls, Fenders, Yairi’s, custom Takamine LTD’s and Martins and I would never pay the price you think these guitars are worth. If you gave me one of these lightweight chambered LessPauls I would play it because that’s what it’s for. Not to sit on a wall or in a case. I don’t hate you or your show, but most of us guys just don’t have your money or influence to justify the cost of these new guitars. They aren’t worth that kind of money.

It's crazy how popular guitars are. Like videos like these wouldn't exist if they were about french horns, cause they aren't popular enough to justify making video about.

Why does Pete Townsend say you need inlay on the first fret? If anything you're going to mark G like it does. EAB and GCD are probably the most used popular song chords. E isn't marked G,A,C,D,B are all marked. Makes sense to me. I'm probably way off from what the original designers were thinking. But yeah, you're right, I would pass on that one. Just too fishy.
