It actually isnt! It's PR which is different from advertising as advertising is paid for and PR is mostly free and given. Beyonce's makeup artist tagging Patrick Starr and giving him a shout out and Patrick subsequently engaging back on his social media isn't 'advertising' in the traditional sense but just PR, even if he did it unknowingly. Of course PR is always a form of advertising, but the rules and ethics can be fudged a bit. I'm actually a media student studying Public Relations/Marketing and Journalism and this is what I learned in school lol

This. From a business standpoint, I don’t think it was smart - especially given that he’s an influencer and has to know how endorsements work - but in the moment he just seems lost in the sauce and wants to share the excitement. Like, again, as an influencer I’d expect to know better, but as we’ve seen influencers aren’t always the best at filtering their posts (the irony of that phrasing is unintended but I cannot be bothered to try and rewrite it) and can be prone to oversharing. Professional? No. Understandable? Totally - and I’m barely a Beyoncé fan. I can see the articles being the product writers who keep an eye on what’s trending on social media, and I hope that they aren’t the result of him paying - it’s an excellent product, and while I’m sure being linked to Bey gave him a boost, he doesn’t need it.

I honestly hate that people are giving Carmine such hate. The production of those red beetles is very expensive and they are literally bred to produce the color. Because of the toxic "Vegan" Options there are artisanal masters who are closing down the production which means the way to create the dyes is phasing out and also the beetles are not being raised or protected. I know that people think crushed beetles and hate it but honestly those beetles are crushed after they are dead and spent a long life eating delicious cacti that is prepared for them in Mexico. IS2G sometimes the vegan alternative is more harmful and worse for the environment than the non-vegan one.

A lot of people have Carmine allergy and intolerance. I get gnarly eye infections if carmine gets in my eyes. And those red dyes are approved for cosmetics in the EU, by more up-to-date cosmetics standards. Red lake does not often cause “stinging”, it causes staining. Carmine is deadly for some people. I’m grateful to red lake formulas because it means I can use reds and purples at all.

What Patrick did and what James is doing are in two totally different ball fields imo. Patrick got specifically and publicly shouted out on the MUA's account (AND dm'd) for a specific event for Beyonce and he was genuinely very excited and it seems like it just got out of control. The MUA maybe didn't realize how much it would all blow up, magazines do articles about celebrity makeup secrets all the time but those are probably still run through a PR team and with the rise of influencer brands big celebrities are probably still extremely hesitant to take positions. James is putting these celebrities' faces in his PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL very likely without their consent unless he's paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do so cus I highly doubt they've just allowed him to do so out of the goodness of their hearts. They don't just allow their likeness to be used for promotional material like that on a whim there are contracts involved and again I doubt big name celebrities want to take an endorsement for a new influencer brand especially for James.

patrick didnt do anything wrong here imo. that setting spray is truly amazing, and has been a favorite in the makeup space since it LAUNCHED. Its not like he just gave the spray to muas for promo or review, they GO OUT THEIR WAY to get it bc its just objectively GOOD. And lastly like LETS BE FR i dont think its even SURPRISING that bee’s muas would be using that spray, i think its surprising if they didnt.

my credibility to talk abt this: this spray got me through a real sweaty hoco, ateez concert, UNIVERSAL(rode all the coasters and velocicoaster TWICE), and so much more without any budge besides like lipstick

I doubt James knew anything about his product's formulation, nor does he know anything about FDA regulations. (EDIT: i don't support James, but as someone who has worked in a cosmetics toll manufacturer / lab, they are responsible for informing him about the ingredients and its indications, regulations, etc, but ultimately the choice to put the warnings lie on the client James. As for James, i'm just not surprised lol. I wrote this as a quip to his "worked on the formulation for 4 years." It seemed like bullshit, and now it's proven as bullshit 😅)

Unfortunately he is not wrong. I also have pale eyes with prominent veins and with no base every shadow looks patchy. He put it straight on his face which was a bad move, you can see where the spatula first put the product. Second take looked way better because he applied it brush first, more even. But for the sake of it being James’s product… it’s patchy as shit boo 1 star review.

At least with Patrick Starr's product the make up artist publicly acknowledged that Beyoncé was wearing his setting spray until James where we just have to take his word for it.

Honestly i don't see the issue with patrick's posts, (at least he didn't print it out and made it look like beyonce herself picked it and put it on) he was excited and he kept saying "THE MAKEUP ARTIST USED" not that Beyonce picked it also the makeup artist gave him a very public shout out that everyone could see. What the articles do is out of his hands. I've also seen many small shops do the same where they make a video post or post about a celebrity using their products, for example Hard Jewelry made an excited post like patricks showing how Halsey wore their jewelry. They never printed out a picture or anything tho. I don't think it's right what James did though that's next level

I don't feel bad for anyone who buys from or still supports James Charles. Not to mention, this product seems like a novelty at best. I DON'T want to have to use paint tubes and squeeze each color as I need them out onto a pallete EVERYTIME I go to do a face. Especially for the eyes.

I don't understand why James doesn't just openly address the warnings that are associated with artificial reds. Say what you will about him, but when Jeffree Star launched his Blood sugar pallette, he openly and thoroughly addressed the risks with staining and the FDA's classification of vegan red formulas, and that didn't stop people from buying that pallette. It's literally so easy to talk about it and tends not to drive people away from your product.

see how channels like this handle it and I'm honestly not surprised. This video is really doing its best to cast red lake in a shitty light, even though it is approved for cosmetics in the EU, beyond reasonably safe, and a great alternative for those who cannot or do not want to use carmine. The "Not for use on eyes" label looks bad enough to people who don't know better, but girly here is even going so far as pronouncing staining like "stinging" to make it sound like red lakes are problematic, when the ingredient they are replacing is more likely to cause stinging. I just hate that J* is one of the only places to find nice deep red shadows without carmine, because I hate the idea of supporting him.

Idk it’s a tough one. I don’t do hair for celebrities but I have done hair for films and an outsourced contractor as a colourist for a roll - not as a listed crew member. What if the hair I did was in an movie that blew up? I feel like I’m still allowed to use those photos to show off my work as long as I took the photos myself. James is using the artists photos so it’s weird… the only part I can’t get behind is the use of the photos in print. But I think it’s okay to say the products were used by the artist. He’s not saying the celebrities endorse it.

Wait...isn't this the exact same problem he had with his eyeshadow palette? He was using this red and people were getting blisters and/or red staining? I was going to say he doesn't learn but at this point he straight up doesn't care.

Wasn’t his palette made by morphe themselves to really him. Plus idk cus I don’t know that much of the ingredients and even when I used James Charles palette I didn’t get any staining nor blisters (maybe cus I’m black idk-)

@@AUGHHHHHBBGyes Morphe made his palette but they didn’t inform him to warn his customers that some of the colors could stain/irritate the eye and he got super defensive when he was called out by Kodeerants when their eye got stained

@@jesuusch I think so too cus a bunch of my friends got it and all of us who are black or brown didn’t have any stains or blisters but my lights lined friends got blisters and stains

I feel like SOME of these beauty influencers that have their own brand think it's alright to use celebrities images for free promo if they use a product or are told by the makeup artist that they used their product🙄Yet the SAME influencers will lose their marbles if a smaller brand/company uses their review videos or pictures as promo for their products without permission and then demand compensation the rules still apply to celebrities as well

Imagine being that famous and having someone close to you who works on you every day selling you out like that for internet clout. If any of them are still working for those singers I will be shocked. They will probably get blacklisted from celeb client lists because of their idiocy

The problem with Painted is going to be similar to the ABH Lip Palette. E V E R Y O N E wanted the ABH lip palette, but not everyone knows color theory. So with that, a lot of people would mix their color and end up with some ugly combos. Not everyone knows how to skillfully combine paint colors to make new shades that ALSO look good on them - so the Paints could have some hype, but they wont ever get used the way he's hoping.

So …. Next time Manny complains that an eyeshadow is patchy we should just remind him it’s because of his vitiligo … Idk matte cream based eyeshadows/pigments seem less forgiving why is he putting all this energy in defending the product.

You would think after the red mishap with his morphe palette, you would think he would have learned from that. I saw Manny use the products, and they look terrible.

Was it that difficult for manny to have a base on the lid first before reviewing the product? He’s seeing the comments, people call him out to try it this way now so we see if it’s actually patchy!

Using James’ paints as makeup legit looks like clown makeup

This is like when random makeup companies uses celebrities to sell their products on Facebook, 100% if someone used James face without his knowledge he would make sure a lawsuit happened. How dumb can he be?

Honestly if someone else was releasing this product I’d 100% buy it. I know people are saying it’s a weird product or risky but I personally love eye paints. I have quite a few that are more expensive than JC’s. I rarely get staining but if I do, I always know that’s a risk I took by using one that’s not eye safe. But I refuse to support a weird groomer predator. He will never get a dime from me.

It's the fact I got James' paint set and I literally have an eye infection from it. From a small incident where some of the red paint got into my eye. At first, I didn't think much of it and I washed it out but a day after, my eye started to get extremely irritated and swell. Now I got a major eye infection thanks to it.

I have a list of blocked influencers who I cannot stand solely based on their voices… James is one of them 😖

I have an Urban Decay pallet that has a few colors that state they aren’t for the eye area. They labeled it in the box and the back of the pallet.

I have vitiligo too and know how make up sits on the skin. That brown is hella patchy, it’s not a skin issue 🙄

I hope the beauty artists don't get backlash for these influencers.

A lot of people have allergies to Red dye (both of them) so both eyes and lip use will be a potential issue. Glad this was brought to people’s attention. And Manny has the same condition I do on my eye lids. All my shadows look patchy unless I conceal n color treat the area first.

The thing with warnings is it doesn't matter if the warning is on the packaging only. You HAVE to disclose the warning EVERYWHERE. Consumers have to know the health hazard of a product; otherwise, you will be in SERIOUS trouble. Did James not have a marketing/ legal team to disclose this all to him? Same with endorsements.
