These BIZARRE Aztecs Events Will Leave You Horrified

Check out Serpent Forge here: serpentforge.com/
The Aztec Empire is one of the most infamous empires in history. From their capital of Tenochtitlan, they ruled over much of Mexico in the 15th and early 16th centuries until their conquest by the Spanish conquistadores, led by Hernan Cortes, in 1521. Today, we explore some of the stranger aspects and events in Aztec history.
The Aztec Empire was ruled by the Mexica, a people from whom Mexico got its name. The Mexica migrated into Central Mexico in the early to mid 13th Century. Aztec legends claim that they came from a homeland called Aztlan. Historians believe the Mexica really came from desert areas in Northern Mexico or the Southern United States, but what or where ‘Aztlan’ was remains unknown.
Famously, the Aztecs claimed that Huitzilopochtli, the God of War and the Sun, told them to settle their new city where they saw an eagle sitting on a cactus. Later recountings of the legend claim that the eagle was eating a snake. They found this sign on the shores of Lake Texcoco, where they founded their city of Tenochtitlan, on the site where Mexico City now stands. This foundation myth is still popular today and the image of an eagle devouring a snake on a cactus remains on the Mexican flag.
The history of the Aztec Empire is difficult to recount because of how little evidence survives. There are no pre-conquest textual histories of the Empire and time has buried much of the archaeological evidence beneath modern cities or lost it to nature. As a result, we only get brief glimpses of individual events for most of Aztec history.
One of the more unfortunate rulers of the Empire was a man called Tizoc. Tizoc rose to power in 1481 following the death of his elder brother Axayacatl. His name meant “He who makes sacrifices” but this proved to be ironic. As part of his connotation war, Tizoc waged a war against the Otomies of Metztitlan, but the new tlatoani captured a mere 40 prisoners for sacrifice - an embarrassingly poor performance. This pathetic display undermined Aztec strength and Tizoc spent his brief reign desperately subduing the fringes of the Empire who had been emboldened by the weakness of their new overlord. Eventually, even Tizoc’s own family wanted him gone. Tizoc was most likely poisoned by his younger brother Ahuitzotl, who succeeded him on the throne and proved a far better warrior and leader.

    Just like how in the 19th Century, the Pawnee tribe sided with the white man against the Lakota(Sioux) because how they were traditional enemies and because of the 1873 Sioux massacre upon the Pawnee. Unfortunately, I have heard the modern day Pawnee tribe and the modern day Sioux tribes still have animosities toward each other. Even though today in the 21st Century, Native Americans should pardon the pun, bury the hatchet, put aside their ancient tribal animosities, and form a unified Native American civil rights movement.

    You forgot a couple things: • Pozole, a traditional Mexican dish today, was served in pre-Hispanic times with human meat. Today we just use either pork or chicken. • Aztecs used a rack called "tzomptantli", where they would show the severed heads of their enemies. • Aztecs sacrificed a group of Spanish, Caribbean & African travelers (including pregnant women) who were trying to reach Cortes. • There is a deity in Mesoamerican culture called Xipe Totec: it's a priest dressed with a flayed skin. Rituals often included dancers & priests resembling him. • Very probably Aztecs liked to brag about their own brutality: it is thought that this "84K people sacrificed in four days" thing was merely a way for Aztecs to show off. Anyway, nice video XD.

This wasn't done in the dark corners of a dungeon like the SI, this was done in the highest temples of the land while being watched and adored by the entire population. to compare the two shows an extreme ignorance of what happened.

    @ImpeachObamaASAP2010 I completely disagree. Id do more research into the Spanish inquisition if you think it wasnt widespread. Historians estimate they killed between 30 and 300 thousand of their own citizens just in Spain and it was being done all over Europe very publicly. Almost all executions at the time were done in public squares. And the Spanish were also genociding multiple cultures at the time which i find worse. The Aztecs killed prisoners of war which again most other cultures did. They were by no means the first society to do human sacrifice and saying they're worse than other cultures doing the same thing isn't accurate.

    The Aztecs was such a beautiful civilization in terms of architecture and scenery but they were a very bloody and gory as a culture. They would kill and draw blood for sacrifices regularly. They killed children in brutal ways. They would wear the skin of their sacrifices and eat them. The kept the heads of the sacrifices on display. And whats worst is that becoming a sacrifice was seen as honorable and many sacrifices were worshipped as the embodiment of the gods. Imagine society praising you as they lead you to a brutal death. They were bizzare and they would not be compatible with the modern world. I'm sure it was a surreal thing for the Spanish to witness.

    I realize the sensationalism of the sacrifices makes good viewing, but I take exception that when the subject of human sacrifice comes up, the first thing out of peoples mouths is, Aztecs. Human sacrifice was practiced by almost every society in the world, from the druids to the Hebrews and much further back. There is some speculation that the Assyrians sacrificed children and newborns to their gods. Yet there is no sensationalism about that. Sacrifices are usually offered to appease their gods in every case. Every society had their way of showing reverence, this was just the Mexica way.

    I appreciate getting both sides of a story, so I appreciate all the counter-points and possible alternative hypotheses that were provided. One thing that I can’t wrap my head around in these events is how did they get easily wiped out by foreign germs? Its used to explain the death of 10’s of millions indigenous peoples across the continents of the Americas, yet the reverse didn’t happen?

  • @local_authority

    @local_authority

    Жыл бұрын

    Immunity to disease by the foreigners was higher because they were more well travelled, whereas the ones who usually died from the introduced diseases had little to no immunity or exposure to these particular deadly pathogens viruses and bacterias thus making them more susceptible to extreme sickness or death, similar to what has happened to China with the forced lockdowns for years, now being lower immunity and at higher risk of adverse effects from the mutated and stronger strains we're seeing.

  • @ImpeachObamaASAP2010

    @ImpeachObamaASAP2010

    Жыл бұрын

    It's very simple. Animals. Europeans, Africans, and Asians all domesticated animals. Living in close proximity to animals creates an environment that allows viruses to jump species so since these people domesticated so many animals they were infected time and time again with many different diseases that originated from animals. European explorers carried these diseases with them to the Americas and then accidentally infected the local population, they didn't know enough about germs to use them as biological weapons. Throughout both North and South America the only animal to be domesticated was the llama and because of this they were never infected with all of the diseases the Europeans were so they did not have natural immunity to them so they died off at an extremely high rate, something like 90% of the population of both continents. Europeans had immunity to these diseases and still died from them so you can imagine what would happen in a population with 0 immunity. In short, the Europeans had a bunch of diseases to spread to the native Americans who didn't have any diseases to give in return.

  • @ImpeachObamaASAP2010

    @ImpeachObamaASAP2010

    Жыл бұрын

    Also it took 200 years for the population to decline by that 90% it was just in a year or two. If you study the reports from the initial explorers they told of massive cities with huge populations but 200 years later when the colonists started to arrive the cities couldn't be found so they were assumed to be just legends but now we have uncovered the ancient cities in the Amazon

    @@ImpeachObamaASAP2010 that does make a ton of sense. I know vegans talk about diseases jumping from livestock to humans all the time, so it’s certainly plausible. I was also thinking that people of the Americas didn’t have horses, which I assume would help them build their own immunity/diseases they could offer to Europeans from the cross-pollination, if you will, of the added traffic from horses. Thanks for giving me input on that.

    @@FearlessP4P1 no problem, if you look at the way Europeans, Asians, and Africans kept their animals at the time they literally lived with them. most people didn't have large spacious barns, the animals were kept inside during the winter. just imagine sleeping with a cow, some pigs, and a few chickens IN your house lmao. it was this close proximity that allowed the germs to mutate, not meat consumption. all the germs are killed during the cooking process but living with and around them everyday gives plenty of chances for cross infection. most of the time the person infected will just fight off the disease but every now and then it mutates to be able to infect the host... and that's how we get the swine/avian flu and other such diseases but it wasn't the native Americans fault, there simply weren't many animals in the Americas that were even capable of being domesticated. they domesticated the llama and that's about it

    Cannibalism explains a lot about why the gods of the Aztecs required human blood for their existence. Replace the gods with the priestly elites and you have the reason for the continual need for human sacrifice. It has been said that the region lacked a plentiful source of animal protein and that the diet of maze was deficient in protein. Same goes for the Mayans before them. This was how the priests fed themselves a diet of protein. Forget the nonsense about the gods etc. The priestly elites created these myths to justify their actions. This explains a lot about the conflicts of the flower wars and the uprisings among the peasants who supplied the sacrifices with their own bodies. This is a socially destructive practice that is inherently abhorrent.

Many Mexicans today dont have time or means to do proper research on their ancestry or nation's history, but let me school you... there's an enormous Y chromosome diversity observed in Native American populations. So, although most of the Mexicas/Aztecs were decimated, that doesn't mean that modern Mexicans don't carry the same genetics as the Aztecs did. I, for example, have a DNA of 96% Mesoamerican directly connected to Tenochtitlán or modern-day Mexico City. I have virtually pure Native American blood. And yeah, perhaps I don't know Nahualt, and my name is not Tizoc, but my bloodline and lineage is Mesoamerican. Warrior Pedigree. The Aztecs tribes live through me and many of us here in the U.S. and Mexico, it's literally in the blood and genetics of many of us. Look at the Mexican flag... that prophesy of the eagle with the snake has not been forgotten; it remains and will prevail.💯
