Fun fact: The Mesoamerican city with the most Ball Game courts was the Olmec-Xicallanc city of Cantona, in the modern state of Puebla. It had at least 27 of them. The ruins can be visited today as an archaeological site.

This presentation really resonated. I have been to several of these courts on the Yucatan, including the great one at ChichenItza. One can feel very powerful and intense 'presences' at these sites, especially if certain "aides to perception" are utilized. You've done a good job of capturing and presenting the 'vibe' at these locations, even with the very basic and 'primitive' animation; as well as providing some knowledgeable historical info. The background music you use is tasteful and not intrusive, this is an area that many YT presenters fail at. All in all a great job! Thanks!

I've heard that the bigger tribes would use the excuse of mandatory games to keep the smaller tribes numbers down. If your best warriors are getting killed in a sport you are less likely to rebel.

I THINK IS A LIE , IS A LIE THE GUIDES TELL TOURIST , I SPOKE TO ONE OF THE GUYS THAT WORKS AT THE ESCAVATIONS AT COPAN RUINS AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS ALL SYMBOLIC THAT ACTUALLY WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IS AFTER EVERY GAME THEY WOULD BRING A CAPTURED ENEMY AND THE WINNING TEAM WOULD KILL HIM IN THE DEATH STONE , WICH REALLY MADE MORE SENSE TO ME ,

I was always taught that it was called Pok-A-Tok and that modern day players/teams have done their best to play it the same way as their ancestors did. But since there is no complete handbook of rules and how to play it’s more like a mix between an educated guess and figuring it out through trial and error. Pretty amazing none the less!

My 6th grade teacher taught me about this game, quite a fascinating situation

its crazy how you’d think they would be prisoner or people forced to play this game for civilians and noble enjoyment, while in fact it was an honour to play the game and it was completely voluntary!

It could be different because regions had their own ideas. It's funny how Mexicans always take the Aztec culture as their main inspiration, ignoring the south is mainly Mayan (I live in a region where Mayans, Aztecs and Olmecs existed, but most Native people speaks Náhuatl, the Aztecs' language).

@Black Solid At least the aztecs had better reasoning for sacrifice. Many in the west did it for entertainment purposes only. Nobody wishes death upon them since they did provide the world with many benefits we have today. Who's to say the Aztecs or the mayas wouldn't have provided value to the world too if only they were allowed to grow. Only people with the brain size of a pea wouldn't understand these truths.

@Black Solid Yes and those beliefs were real to them just like Jesus or God was an is real to Europeans. Imagine if you actually believed that because it was the only thing you've ever known. You'd probably be sacrificing humans too since you'd be afraid of the world ending. It would actually feel real to you too just like it did to many other aztecs.

I'm from Mexico, I've seen a couple of these games live. Just without the sacrifice thingy

I live in the Yucatan Peninsula and had watched a few games in show and OMG it gives you the thrills of any sport as they are close to score or when they actually score. Leaving aside the bloody past it's a really fun game to watch.

Brings new meaning to "Ball is life."

The winners got killed, not the losers. But that also represented a problem, since the best teams were being killed, only the worst teams kept playing the game.

I went to Chichen Itza and saw the place where it was played. despite knowing a brutal game was played on the court. it was actually beautiful to look at, overall the entire place was beautiful.

I'm glad he added that small addition to the title of this video near the end. At Chichen itza we took the tour of that whole area and that huge ball court was included. The tour speaker said that the players played TO WIN for the honor of being sacrificed to the gods. I clearly remember this cause my wife and i were joking about always being the loser of this game to live longer - "Ah gee whiz! Lost again? Gosh I suck at this game! Oh well, I guess I'll just go home now and sulk at what a loser I am. See you fellas later, oh wait I guess i won't. Well say 'hi' to the gods for me, see ya!".

Romans: our gladiator games are brutal and bloodthirsty Aztecs: *hold our rubber ball*

I actually learned about this in school and my teacher actually went there but his tour guide said that the winners were sacrificed

Actually the winners where sacrificed… most likely the captain. They did have slaves play as well. It was an honor to be sacrificed for a better harvest next season. Although, the winners where sacrificed but not all the time. Mostly done during holidays as we would say or celebrations

I remember someone trying to make a game out of that sport, but it later became Thrill Kill some time later in development.
