These 3 Mistakes Are DESTROYING Your Pop Up
If you consider how to surf, you can't go past the pop up, the take off; it's one of the most searched topics for beginners and intermediates to improve their surfing.
I've seen some very common threads in this area and I'll cover three of them in today's video.

10 - 4 . I just started surfing again after 25 yrs off, 61 now. Gettin up, but not poppin'...lol
You kind of touched on it now but one thing that has made my pop up way more consistent is the idea of pushing my board under my feet as opposed to 'popping up'' on the board. Might be psychological but the emphasis on pushing down ensures that I'm directly on top of my board rather than being slightly off axis.

"pushing board" has another important effect. That is slightly moving the board to adjust the reaction of the wave so that your body is not compromised when popping up.
Kale I have to thank you for all these videos. Thanks to you I have went from whitewater to catching my first green waves ( really memorable feeling ) and I have shared your tips with other friends that I convinced to try on surfing. I now have a surf group and its all thanks to you and your lessons. I wish you all the best there is in life.

That’s so cool mate!!! Well done! Frothing for ya
I've been surfing pretty much everyday in San Diego the last 2 months. There were days were I was getting up and riding and loving it. Now I've regressed for whatever reason and your videos are giving me things to work on. Thanks for the video Kale!
As an idea bro, tackle the subject of common injury caused by surfing (shoulder impingement, golfer elbow, knew etc...) so people are aware of what they need to do outside the surf to prevent those injuries which can keep you out of water for so long. Or tips to release pain when it s too late.
Absolutely love your tutorials, the explanations are on point!! It's been so helpful to digest theory while not being able to surf (I live in London) and then put things into practice once you get the chance. Thanks so much :)

This video is exactly what I needed! Thank you! I am so keen to get out and try these tips. I’ve finally figured how to remain calm and do long deep paddles which is helping sooo much. Before, I was paddling like a maniac and only doing short, shallow paddles (basically I windmilling my arms like a psycho)... as you can imagine I was barely catching any waves and had no time to look around and check my positioning.
Another perfect and perfectly timed vid. Very excited for the van series too. Superbly delivered, excellent information and on point as always. Thanks bro. So appreciate your work.
Everything you have said has basically reignited with how I’ve approached learning to surf. I’ve trained BJJ for years and our fundamental drills are done from day 1 right up until now 15 yrs later every time we do class. Fundamentals are 🔑. So I prioritised paddling and having a good feel for the board and controlling my board just on flat days and having a connection with my board, this also helped develop some paddle fitness, and on and on. I have friends who won’t go out if it’s flat, not even to paddle. Now I’m super confident in paddling and have far more success in catching waves because my better controlled paddling gives me more time to concentrate on popping up. Really loving the learning of the fundamentals.
When I noticed that adding a last strong extra stroke and pushing down with my chest in this last stroke just before I pop up, this REALLY helped me. You can see it at 5:20 how just before popping up he pushes the board down with his chest :)
You are a wonderful person for sharing all this information! Thank you so much!
Great tips! Glad I found your channel. Never thought of approaching waves like this - definitely can see how there will be a lot less wasted energy during every session. 🤙🏼
This video really helped me! Thank you for your help! Keep posting them!
Kale, I've never commented any video on youtube. You are doing a really great job helping me and others surfers around the world. The way that you teach and show these exemplas are objective. Hope you having a good surfing trip! Cheers

Thanks for those tip! Those excercise are right on point!
Thanks Kale! Love your content it has really helped put Me back in the game after 20 plus years. I'm back on My short board it is so fun to ride. I do flat water paddles twice a week for about an hour on a SUP. As it's flat on My side of the island (Vancouver). I like to do lots of push up's along the way and try to keep a constant banana shape. My pop up's are back on and it's fun to surf again. I look forward to giving your exercises a go.
Great refresher for an old kook who sometimes has a shit surf, living in a van on east coast would be epic. Bit like being a nomad in Indo

Cheers broder some good info here! I’ve been surfing 20+ years and takeoff is still my weakest point! 😉
Another great and useful video. Thanks. A physics FYI: Momentum = Mass * Velocity, so you will never match the momentum of a wave unless you are a huge elephant on a small wave. Nice to see the longboard footage.
that last swiss ball stability exercise is new to me. certainly gonna add it to my training routine. Good luck with the van Kale !! Greetings from Israel

Great video Kale! One thing you may want to discuss in a future tutorial is the best technique for a quick turn, especially on a longboard. Facing the wave is definitely correct, but I can tell you that as a beginner it's slightly terrifying until you get good at the pivot. (And the bigger the board the harder it is to do.)

I am loving your vids Kale. I am a beginner surfer and found your vids very helpful. Is it better for me catch unbroken waves instead of the white water? I find it hard to pop up on white water. Would love to book a lesson with u.

Another great one, Kale! Do you have any tips for more consistent front foot placement on pop up? My front foot sometimes lands too far back when I'm on my shortboard; occasionally too far forward, usually on longboards. Happy with where my back foot lands, over the fins. Thanks, man!
Positioning is really the big damned elephant in the room! Ciao Kale! Greetings from Italy

Thanks. It seems obvious that doing on land exercises for strengthening helps you when you get in the water. One of my many problems is that I really don’t prepare in advance on land. I just show up at the beach a few times a summer and think I can surf. I still enjoy it though but my progress is slow.
I'll try these tips tomorrow. Wish me luck

Your videos are sooo good!!! :) and I’m always so lucky to find exact the one which is handling at least one of the things I have to work on: paddle technique and the stability on the board when my paddling has to be faster. My smooth star (Holy Toledo 33“) just arrived and my next step is to order Your program! It’s the first time on a skater for me so I’m practicing on an empty school yard during the summer holiday, the less audience the better :))

Hey Kale love the videos and all the tips, thanks for all the content! Had a quick question regarding my front knee coming passed the outside of my forearm when popping up rather than under my chest, are there any areas or stretches on land I can work on to get my knee under my chest like the jack knife you mentioned? It doesn't affect my surfing much in terms of catching waves but from a technique perspective, I would like to correct it. I'm able to do it on land but not in the water from footage I have seen/taken... Thanks!

Claymation pop-ups are interesting and needed after having both hips replaced. It took about a year to do pop-ups again and then I tore a rotator cuff or maybe two :-)

I just had my left hip replaced in April. The right was done in June of 2020. I'm 60. Arm/ shoulder pain for me is from muscle imbalance, from too much paddling. I have treated this successfully with a training band doing inward, and outward rotations of the arm at waist level. kzread.info/dash/bejne/goqYycyBoaTLo5s.html
Met you at urbnsurf will try these tomorrow, really like the videos!
