TOP 5 BIG IMPACT Tips For Beginner Surfers (for faster progression)
Surfing is considered one of the most difficult sports to learn with beginners sometimes stagnating in their progression for years at a time.
In this video I cover 5 of the most significant mistakes that I see as a professional surf coach including the pop up / take off, paddling, eyeline on the wave and more.
I'm so excited because we just released our brand new online program THE BEGINNER SURFER'S ROADMAP bit.ly/SurfersRoadmap_Beginne...
It is the most effective learning pathway for progressing your surfing from beginner through to intermediate with a structured, reliable roadmap to follow.

When I was learning to first catch waves, I had the all too common problem of being too “stiff” on the board, and losing my balance. I learned to absorb the movement of the board into my knees, so that I could keep my upper body relatively stable (and thus keep my balance). When I started to try to learn compression and extension, I mimicked this technique, compressing and extending in such a way as to NOT put force through the board so that I could stay “loose” and balanced. It wasn’t until I had failed to utilize this faulty technique for weeks that I just decided I would try to pump so hard that I would submerge the board (I was just messing around and experimenting). When I put this much force through the board (similar to the “jump” recommendation in Kale’s video) I felt the board rebound off the water and interact with the wave in a new way, completely unlocking this skill and my bottom turn and speed pumps, transforming them from something more passive, to something more active and engaging with the wave.

Fire tips! Been surfing for 20 years, made a few changes and ripped my last session. Psyching out of my mind!
The last point is soo true. I live quite far away from regular surfable waves. This year I almost spend a whole month at my favorite break and improved soooo much more.

Like the new intro. Helpful tips as always.
Such a great video, this is so helpful. all of the common mistakes and yes, surf more!
Hey Kale, these are some excellent analysis and tips. I notice the cross over to surf skating with the compression, leading arm, rotation and eye line. Stuck in a lockdown here in Aotearoa and missing some great waves right now. Keep up the awesome work. And the new intro is great too.

This is great! Thank you! Tip 4 is what I'm working on now. I think I keep popping up too fast and either fall in or lose momentum and miss the wave altogether. But, with practice, I'm noticing what I'm doing wrong and correcting myself each time.

One of your best videos so far. You’re definitely improving the quality of your tutorials Kale! It would be amazing if you could talk about front foot positioning. How to consistently hit the sweet spot from take off. I land with my front foot too far forward 90% of the times. And no, I do not hold the rails. Not sure how to correct that! Anyways, thanks for your videos. They are an awesome contribution to the surf community 🤙🏽

@@KalesBroccoli thanks Kale! It might be. I now ride mainly my Spitfire 5.10 / 33.4 liters. I am 6.2 / 80 kilograms. I have ridden many other boards and sizes and the problem seem to happen with all of them. I’ll try positioning a bit further back when paddling and see if that helps. Thanks again!
Thank you
Great vid Kale! Oh how I’d love to surf twice a week (or more!) but definitely agree that time in the water makes the difference. I’m 51 and surf once a week but find when I take my family down the coast for a school hol’s I surf twice a day and feel the difference in progression every time. Keep up the great work mate. Cheers from Brisbane.

Hey kale! Love this video! Do you think you can make a video of all the lengths of the boards (longboard, foamie, mid length, fish, and shortboard) and what level you should be at before riding those boards please? I’m thinking about purchasing a mid length but I don’t know the pros or cons of each board, and your videos are always unbelievably helpful! Have a great day 🤙🏽

Excellent advice kale but here in Guernsey Channel Islands your lucky if you get beginner surf more than once a month- sometime three days on the trot then nothing for a month or more. Added witn in the summer 90 or more boards in the water at any one time. Very frustrating. But I perseve and progress slowly so must complain
Brillant thanks from Brittany france support to the Ausi Truckers
Hey I was wondering how do you film someone surfing ? Nice videos it helps a lot !
I really need to come to your neck of the woods to get some surf coaching
Unfortunately I don't have a choice, I only get to go surfing once a week, if I'm lucky twice a week. But I live minimum 1hr away from the nearest surf beach and have a full time job :( but just in a few months I feel like I'm getting my skill back. But still having the same issues I had over 10 years ago

Hey kale, i have been thinking a lot recently, and i thought about putting weight to my body (not like eating a lot but more like special weights) and try surfing with that, so that when i am taking them back off, i will be faster and literally way lighter especially in my movements. A little bit like the old monks used to do put metal rings on there arms for training to be faster and stronger. But i am not sure yet if that makes sense, i would like to hear your thoughts on that
Surf more. If you can't surf more, then paddle your board in a pool to build up your paddling ability so you can be strong when you surf in the ocean. If your local pool won't let you paddle, join a masters swim program and ask a coach to look at your stroke. That helped me immeasurably.
Hi kale. I am struggling with my drop in a bottom turn. I would love for you to make a video on how to improve on those things. Thanks!!!!

Can you make a video about how to face the fear of the impact zone or intimidating looking waves? Like focusing on being confident on the basics on surfing, etc.
@keno1069
Жыл бұрын
I suggest surfing smaller waves until you develop the confidence to go out in bigger surf. That's what I'm doing. It's helping my paddling, which is crucial because bigger waves move faster. I'm still scared to go out in the really big stuff, though. Maybe my suggestion should be ignored. haha
Lets open the aus nz bubble🤣 i want to have a go at the pool,
Hey Kale, I’m a late beginner who’s been riding 9foot longboard for the past year. I can’t cutback on waves yet with a longboard but I can turn. You’ve recommended twinsman for somebody my stage. I’m wondering how much volume you would recommend I cut for a second surfboard ? And which board construct do you suggest ?

I’m a teenager so I can’t afford to surf more than once a week because I have to rent a board but I usually surf the whole day. Do you think that’s enough to make good progress?
Paddling aside it's pretty much the same advices with snowboarding! Can't wait to give it a go (surfing) was a snowboard teacher for a few years Good content mate :)
G’day Kale, kooky question coming at you - I keep dragging my second toe of my leading foot each session bruising it pretty badly while surfing… I’ve tried changing my push up position of my hands and emphasising lifting my leg/hip but it keeps happening! Beyond frustrated

Look into a "fish" surfboard. It has lots of volume, and therefore easier to catch waves and stand up. It also has the height, and width of a shortboard. This is a key part of it too. Kinda like a cross between a mall. What do you think @kalesbroccoli?
@mr.slater4577
2 жыл бұрын
I'd still recommend a Malibu style foamy or at least a 7'6 hardboard with enough volume for you bodyweight. A common mistake is to get a board too short. You can step back on a Malibu to get it turned and still get plenty of waves. The time standing on the board is the "quality time" to learn an progress
