i was always a fan of the idea that he whispered "there will be blood" to eli in that scene

He says it at the end, “I told you I would eat you Eli. I told you I would eat you up” It doesn’t require conjecture. There is jo other appropriate time he would tell Eli he would eat him up. And Eli’s face here confirms it. I actually would have preferred if we never found out. After 1.5 hours of watching Daniel, (because almost every scene is centred around Daniel) the audience knows him well enough to guess what he might say here.

on the one hand the scream "i told i'll eat you" in the finale, and then also daniels vengeful competitive nature.....yes, degrading him like that was when he decided to get rid of eli whatever the cost.

Indeed. Eli and Daniel are two sides of the same rusty coin. They're both rotters and that's why they hate each other; because they see the reflection of themselves in each other and it disgusts them.

​@@Right_Said_Brett true, both also were driven deeply by greed, both were psycho or at least sociopathic (eli eventually more openly so than daniel) and that led in both cases to having no ability to really bond with people, thus to their both demise. in a way, eli was more daniels true brother than the man who pretended to be "henry". the movies title could also be like "thou shalt not kill (your brother)" or "where is your brother, kain?" which leads to another interesting point, i feel. daniel, as unchristian as he was, the whole movie focussing on him, eventually was a deeply christian story. also with HW, "the lost son", daniel being portrayed as a "devil" taking hold over a community, oil as the blood of lamb....... what do you think, how did little boston end up? did daniel(s company) with all that wealth live up to the promises he gave them during that speech? i think not.

Daniel day lewis is incredible ..best actor ever ..and eli now starts his career as riddler ..thats an wonderful option🤣😂

Agreed. Daniel Day Lewis is phenomenal in the role and Paul Dano's performance as the Riddler is the sole reason why I'm intrigued to see the new Batman movie. Apparently they based the character on the Zodiac Killer. I recommend that you check out David Fincher's 'Zodiac' if you haven't already. Brilliant film.

paul dano is one beautiful hell of an actor. equally talented as DDL. it was a great casting choice to pit them against each other in this movie.

Paul Dano by any means is starting his career now, he's been around for 20 years and is one of the best yet underrated actors, i got very happy to see that he's getting mainstream attention from playing the riddler which he DID AMAZINGLY!

Many thanks for that little bit of detail and clarification. Just shows how much love this movie gets, if it gets talked about years later.

I've never thought of that before!!!!!! OMG! I always thought he said something like, "if your hands ever touch me again, it'll be the last time they ever touch anything". But after seeing that and hearing that line at the end, I fully believe that's what was said.

Its crazy how the fued between Eli got under his skin so much. I guess it's because he's not used to losing to somebody else or being contested against. But in the last scene Eli is just a figment of his imagination, Daniel has a very weak mental state at the end of the movie. It's clear that Eli has been on his mind for a while now and he hates how Eli won and got the last laugh, he craves a win and even summons up his own scenario where Eli comes to him weak and beaten, needing Daniel's help to succeed.. which is when Daniel puts Eli through the same torture that was placed on him. In Daniel's mind, killing Eli was just the finisher on top getting his revenge for what happened in the church and what not. There are a few signs that Eli isn't real in the last scene, or that the entire scene is a dream sequence entirely. The biggest one that basically confirms this theory is, at the end of the movie there is a time jump, (can't remember the exact amount but it was many years.) Eli is the same exact age as he was at the start of the movie but all the other characters shown have aged a good bit during that jump.

The themes and meaning behind the entire movie go so deep and imo the movie gets better with each watch and there's a way to interpret a lot of things and the movie was purposely made this way. As for the theory, it's pretty solid from all angles and I believe it to be true.. but you are right about it not being confirmed.

Very interesting. If that’s the case you probably are blowing a lot of ppls minds. Sometimes a performance can win a viewer over so hard that certain truths become harder to realize. This would be a good example

*Eli wasn't real at the end bro* Lol, no. The entire movie and its most pivotal moments (Eli's brother Paul, Bandy's tract, the pipe line) were all working towards the payoff at the end: Daniel's brutal practicality had outsmarted Eli's arrogant hubris.

I'd buy that. For a long time something along the lines of "I will eat you" has been one of my theories as to what Daniel said to Eli. My other theory is that he's says the title of the film. "There will be blood, Eli." The religious song about "the blood" is being sung during this scene, after all.

The song saying there is blood would make sense for him to say there will be blood… and I will eat you up.

I actually thought this was what he was referring to in the end scene. Then I thought oh he said he'd "Bury him alive" in the earlier scene, but he says "Eat you alive." It does look like it by the shocked look on Eli's face.

When Daniel was saying this at the end, I was always wondering when did he say that.

No, he doesn't. In the mud fighting scene Daniel says "I'm gonna bury you underground". Which is why I think Daniel says "I will eat you up, Eli. I will eat you up" in the church scene, given that he references it at the end of the film.
