There Will Be Blood Almost Had A Completely Different Main Star
Ойын-сауық
There Will Be Blood will forever be remembered as one of the greatest films ever made. Though one specific casting choice almost changed the course of There Will Be Blood Forever. No, not Daniel Plainview, it would be the other lead of the movie Eli Sunday. Would There Will Be Blood be held in the same regard had nothing changed?

Would There Will Be Blood have been as iconic without Paul Dano?

Paul Dano did such a good job and it bothers me he's not recognized for it more. Tarantino said Dano was a weak point and I don't get it.

Agreed
Everything about this movie is perfect, physically can’t picture anyone else in that role than Dano. Oh and the delivery of the milkshake line by Lewis made it one of the most iconic lines of dialog ever.
I worked on the crew for there will be blood and saw about 80% of the scenes filmed with Kel. I heard a few things here and there from the the editors and anyone involved with reviewing the daily’s. Mostly that he wasn’t matching the energy of Daniel day Lewis. I’d have to say that this was apparent, as there was a big difference when Paul Dano stepped. I can’t say if there was any apparent tensions with Daniel, or PTA because they never showed any conflict on set. Daniel stayed in character the whole time, but was polite when talking to him. He would stay away when doing more intense scenes but I never saw him be mean or anything like that when not filming a scene.

@sij809 so, Paul Dano did have the small part prior and he was liked because of the chemistry. So there was a change to make him play both parts. Now I can’t say if they were twins or not prior. But for sure brothers. All I know is they must have wanted Dano at some time before they officially canned him. Because Dano was in pretty quick and was nailing the scenes really fast. My other form of reasoning is that they were suppose to burn the oil rig earlier during filming but they kept holding off on it. I could only guess it’s because they knew it wasn’t working.
With just 4 days to filming and starring opposite a legend like Daniel Day Lewis, I would say Paul Deno nailed his part.
I like that he's still got a career he enjoys.
Dano was the powerhouse he needed to equal DDL - he was the perfect blessing for the film
This is exactly like what happened with Keitel and Coppola in Apocalypse Now, as soon as the actor arrived to location it became clear that it wouldnt work, aand all of the sudden you got this other guy (Paul Dano) which is a unique actor with the perfect fisique du rol for the character, there's no need for a major conflict, when they saw Dano they knew he was perfect for the role.
I am really glad the other actor got a career in what he liked, maybe it was indeed for the best for him.
Some people know Paul Dano as “The Sunday Twins”…but he’ll always be Klitz to me.

Yes!!!! Same for me! Girl Next Door is tremendous!
I’m convinced that Paul and Eli are actually the same person, since they’re never onscreen together and Paul disappears after his first scene before Eli takes over completely. Like, Eli brought Daniel to the town using a Paul persona before showing his true colors through Eli.
@TheCusita93

I've thought so too, and if I remember correctly, Paul is never brought up again in the film.
@rachelblake2350

@@TheCusita93 he is though. In the final scene, Plainview tells Eli that Paul had got super rich off their deal and got into the oil business himself. This always through me off because I thought the ruse was that Paul sold out his entire town to a predatory monster, and Plainview knew the truth of it, but never mentions it as this hanging guillotine over Eli. And the conflict of the movie is these two pushing each other to see who breaks first. But nope, turns out, twins. Biggest flaw in an otherwise perfect movie. Like, either make them the same person, or have a single scene with the two of them together. You can't do neither.

@Rachel Blake I don't think it's a flaw. I think it adds another layer to the character interactions from the perspective of the viewer. It's a confusion, yes, but confusion isn't always a bad thing. It makes people think after the film is finished. Not every film has to have every thread neatly tied up by the end.
@singleplayermoments

@@rachelblake2350 I didn't get that at all. I always thought of Paul and Eli as two different people. Although, I did keep wondering why we didn't see Paul anymore throughout the film, but that just made the reveal that he got rich off the deal and has all along been living a life of luxury hit that much harder.

Also Pastor Sunday is loosely based on the charismatic man, Billy Sunday, preacher in the late 1800s to early 20th century.
Paul Dano is so good he didn't really need this. I know it was massive for him but something else would have come along for sure. I know Daniel Day Lewis isn't likely to be in any new films his filmography is too short. I can't keep watching Gangs of New York, it has so many issues (although DDL isn't one of them)
Good call on changing the thumbnail, I couldn't tell which is which
Fantastic movie.
I love this movie remember seeing it when I was 10 years old now I’m 27 and still watching it
Based on the clip from 4:43 they absolutely made the right choice. As was Kel to leave acting behind. 💩
Great video.
Amazing 😮
Why is the text/vid of thumbnail Eli Sunday, but the pic is of Daniel Day Lewis character?
I'm more intrigued on how old Paul Dano. He looks the same but because he's not a Hollywood picked man. He doesn't get the Paul Rudd, Keanu Reeves

He was 21 during the filming of TWBB. He's only 38 now, but is aging very nicely!
Unpopular opinion but I could tell something was off with Paul Danos parts...but for the time he had he did a decent job. Not sure who could hold their own against DDL because even Leo who is pretty amazing kept throwing me off and not matching up to his energy.
What happened to the last guy that was running this channel? He was great
He pronounces his name "day-no" not "dan-oh"
It would be interesting to see the version that might have been and compare it to what we got. Not just this movie, but many other films
He kind of resembles Messi
I'm happy O'Neil found his way.
When you work with a once in a lifetime talent like Daniel Day-Lewis, you don't try to make waves, you just consider yourself lucky to be allowed to swim in his wake.
They could’ve flipped roles, and had Kell O’Neil play Paul Sunday, since he’s only in the one scene near the beginning. Now people speculate if Paul and Eli were really the same people, and that Eli had a split personality disorder (bolstered, some say, as, when Eli attacks his father at the dinner table, no one says anything in reference to Paul, either in confirmation or denial of his existence)
Best movie of this century for me !!!
I'm pretty sure DDL could break my spirit on set in short order.
It was between Paul Dano and Queen Latifah
I thought having Paul and Eli Sunday as identical twins was needlessly confusing, especially when they didn't appear at the same time and when at least one of them potentially was a charlatan/confidence trickster. For me it really detracted from the film. I spent half the time second-guessing whether it was actually mesnt to be twins or just someone pretending to be twins, whilst also thinking this was a really silly aspect which surely as an audience we weren't meant to be grappling with
Woo!
❤
Kel O'neill could play David Portnoy.
Brilliant movie
Small nitpick. Calling it one of the most successful movies in the past thirty years is a huge exaggeration. It had a 25 million budget and made about 75. On a critical level it only won one Oscar. Really enjoyed the video. 🙂

You answered your own question. Sometimes things just don't click on set, it's not necessarily because someone was incompetent or a dick.
As for being a “nerd” or “nostalgic” this is neither. You presented a question, with no real answer.
@matthewrocca4197

Nostalgic nerds are filled with questions that don't necessarily have answers. That's not some sort of inherent paradox. Perhaps if the name of the channel was "Philosopher With All the Answers". But definitely no irony or contradiction in a "nerd" who's "nostalgic" posing questions without answers. Also, the point of the video is to give us something to contemplate which we may not have before, a new spin on a classic tale. For all of my knowledge of the making of TWBB, I actually didn't know very much about the Ken O Neil aspect, so this video served its purpose effectively.
I actually prefer The Master ;)

I never really liked Paul Dano's performance. It always struck me as bad acting. I don't know what it is, but when I watch him, I don't see a character, I see an actor straining to act.
