His anger is more powerful in him than the brief moment of realization of what he had done because he is in public. He lies to himself because he has Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Paul Dano has Vulnerable Narcissistic Personality Disorder. They do not feel empathy, but know what it is and are a blackhole of greed, anger, arrogance and low self-esteem that will always lead to their own demise. They are their own worst enemy.

I know everyone is talking about DDL, but God Paul Dano fucking killed this.

So wow wow wow. Did ya'll catch that? DDL knew the character wasn't serious about the ceremony but he was taken aback by the mention of his adopted son, 'cause it's true! But ELI screwed up when he overdid things and became physical, which is Daniel's realm. DDL improvised by mocking him during the smackfest and ELI didn't know the wiser! Props to P.Dano too!

Probably more for the actual scene than for the actor's "revenge." That's the point in the scene, this is the only time Daniel is vulnerable to Eli and he takes full advantage- a sneak peek into the hypocrisy of his character and further depth for us the audience. He's not just some zealot, he's a fallible man, and that weakness sets up the end scene and why Eli puts himself in that position in Daniel's bowling alley. Much easier to bring that energy to the acting when it's fresh in your memory from the day before.

I love how the scene shifts from it apparently exposing Daniel's flawed nature to the world to exposing Eli's. You see Daniel momentarily break his composure when his son is brought up, but once Eli crosses the line and oversteps, his entire attitude changes and he begins to smile and goad him on because he knows he's won. He says, "There it is!" as Eli finally breaks character and reveals the malice and narcissism beneath the surface motivating his prophetic performance. I think one power-hungry psychopath recognizes another and it sets up Daniel's instant recognition of the situation when Eli finally comes to him in the bowling ally, as if Daniel had, in a way, a prophetic understanding that one day it would come to this. He then proceeds to beat him to death with a bowling pin.

You can see Paul Dano is his peer. They change and react to each other as one. This is perfection acting. Nothing more or less

I love it when movies pay close attention to someone listening, rather than talking.

It’s odd how you don’t hear people talk about the true talent, the writers. Always the actors, if people only knew how much of a masterpiece that screenplay is. The detailed camera angels in the action to catch all the hidden Easter egg images, all the underline hidden biblical messages in the writing. Simply amazing

The music as well. When the oil rig blows and catches on fire and Eli loses his hearing, the way the music Just builds throughout that scene is amazing and from memory it’s one continuos shot for entire scene of roughly 5 mins or so

Paul Dano owning this scene with one of our generations greatest actors to play against. Epic

Its interesting when you understand the character, he doesn't yell out of pain that he's abandoned his son, he is yelling out of pure rage that he's being bested and humiliated.

This is all set up at the beginning of the film when he drags himself across the wilderness with a broken leg just to cash in his gold. He will do whatever it takes to win. Maybe there was a time he loved his son, maybe at the very beginning, but he most certainly cared more about winning then he did that boy. When HW gets injured he leaves him to go check on the oil rig, he chooses in that scene money and success over his son, how did you not pick up on that. He spends hours outside looking at the oil, while his son suffers.

@@Streetrocker28 He certainly did care about HW for many years, with the added benefit of him being around a net positive for the business. Daniel's vice of needing absolute victory and nothing short of that would satisfy him. I do agree he's furious because he was humiliated, but earlier in the movie while Daniel is talking to Henry he exposes the parts of himself he's insecure about. So with respect to Eli's sermon, Daniel knows its the only way to Bandy will allow him to build the pipeline. Eli had the upper hand and got to Daniel's core, but messed up when he brought violence (with the slaps) into the equation as a means to revenge for being bathed in the mud earlier in the movie. Had Eli kept the veil of how fraudulent his posturing was and allowed Daniel to actually FEEL his remorse for what he did to HW, we might have seen a different Daniel after the sermon. The slap brought the game back into Daniel's court.

Everything is explained about the character at the very Beginning of the film, dragging himself into town in order to sell his gold, it sets it up in the opening prologue, he is a man who has no good, he never has, everything you see about him when he’s acting good and charismatic is a lie, and the only person he opened himself up to was someone he thought was his genuine flesh and blood, you understand why right? Because he’s self absorbed, he cares for nothing but himself, and those of his blood is a reflection of that, not his adopted son, he took HW and wanted to shape him into what he was, and when that failed he disowned him. You can tell he never cared when HW lost his hearing, all he cared about was that oil, sitting out there all day long while his son suffered, yeah what a great loving person lol, you are delusional to think he ever loved him. He was born alone, and when asked what he wanted from someone he thought was his own brother, he said all he wanted was to be alone, to have know one succeed. I’m sure to some extent he cared, but only if it benefited him. This scene was purely about humiliation, and he despised every second of it. It’s honestly sad you can’t see the deeper meaning to the film, that you fell for the illusion that the film portrays, you believing he ever had love or cared is delusional and exactly what he wants you to think of him. Daniel only ever cried for his dead brother because he is a self absorbed ego maniac that is sad for himself, that a blood sibling of his which reflects himself is gone forever. He never wept for HW, he only showed he cared when others were around to see it, to keep up the illusion that it was his son. Or that he was capable of caring for others, which he wanted others to believe, like a true psychopath.

I love seeing the film as simple text on a page and then seeing it come to life with the visuals and sound

That subtle eye raise around 0:12 is everything great about this scene. Props to DDL the best of our time

TWO BEST ACTORS IN ONE FILM. i honestly loved the film the first time I saw it but I didn't think of it deeply back then. But now, I had understood it, I realized how well it wanted me to realize that Daniel and Eli are just two sides of one coin

I love how his heart began to open to inside suffering (I abandoned my boy), and closed again when it's to circus (last yes I do). The hate took the place and revenge is set

I would say "I abandoned my boy" is the only thing that was real. As the congregation is clamoring and Dano is smacking him, DDL is saying "where is the Lord, Eli? Where is he? Oh! There he is!" in a really sarcastic way you can hear it if you focus on it hard enough.

This scene was such a pressure cooker that when he says 'yes I do' at the end, I almost burst out laughing because it broke the mountainous tension for me.

I love the side-by-side on this. These are just words that I and most people would lack the imagination to appreciate. It really speaks to the strength of acting.

I have abandoned my child I have abandoned my child I have abandoned my boy Gives you the chill even before being a father.

And that was the moment Plainview promised to bury Eli.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest actors of all time.

So crushing. DDL makes this scene come alive. There is nothing gentle or loving about the way this pastor handles this baptism, like watching the devil try to cast out a devil is really just stirring up even worse demons in the protagonist. The bloody conclusion of the story was appropriate. I hope people can find the kindness of Jesus in spite of all the wolves in sheep clothing out there - like the one depicted here.

Rare unbelievable synergy between two actors in a scene.

Daniel ad-libbed that entire rambling dialogue while Eli was slapping him. Incredible!

Fucking brilliant acting, script and directing

He enjoyed getting slapped around. He just hated the part where he had to be sensitive and reflect on his shortcomings as a father

This is the Marvellous acting of DDL, hats off

I remember Paul Dano saying he was scared he slapped DDL too hard here, so DDL ad-libbing "Oh I can feel that" as he gets slapped is even funnier here.

It was fascinating to see the screenplay alongside the acting, when DDL was to fake it/ take it in/ and explode at Eli. The instruction ddl was given and what he turned it into. Amazing!!

You cut this a few seconds too early. The best part of the the scene is when Daniel whispers something to Paul and we see the change in Paul’s demeanor.

You don't need a full movie to prove those actors are amazing. Even Paul, who doesn't have much focus on his face, acts with his voice and his body enough to show he knows his shit

We know Lewis is brilliant, but can we get a hellyeah for Paul Dano

Daniel Day Lewis at his finest. Wonderful performances all around. The story is intriguing and this is one of the best time period pieces ever made. Lewis may be the best male actor of all time and in this movie he shows off his skill to his craft.

I love watching all his expressions and micro-expressions, camera dead set on his face for these long takes, it’s the closest to reading his thoughts. But Paul Dano is such an amazing actor too!! What a dream role 😂 We always expect DDL to be epic anyway, but Dano was such a highlight in this brilliant movie that he became just as huge on the screen. Such a great story, so cleverly done, plus perfect music. I’m sure I memorised half of it at least because it’s all so memorable 😁👌

This is a great example of Chekhov's gun -- setting up the slap which will be brought back by Daniel later (but of course, bigger and harder). We talk about this technique a lot. It's the bread and butter of great writing and a lot of writers forget that you can use it on micro stuff (like dialogue and little character behaviors) as well as macro stuff (like plot points, etc).

Checkov’s gun is a type of forshadowing, and this scene is forshadowing as you’ve described, but it’s not Checkov’s gun.

Chekhov 's gun isn't about setup/payoff or foreshadowing per se. It's, "a narrative principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed." IOW if you show a gun, it has to be used. It could be used immediately; it doesn't have to be foreshadowing. It's not a law, either. Many writers including Hemingway use inconsequential details to add color and texture. Checkov himself violated his own rule, having loaded firearms in one play go unfired. I suppose one could argue that they were used, as they reinforce the play's theme of incompetent action.

Missed that part where DDL shakes his head like a dog to get rid of the holy water 🐶🐶🐶

Top 10 times actors weren’t acting

Everyone hypes up the “I’ve abandoned my child!” part but I think his best line delivery is the way he says “I will never backslide” not sure why I just think he delivers that perfectly.

Moments later when Daniel whispers something into Eli’s ear, I believe Daniel is telling him he is going to eat him up. At the end during the bowling alley Daniel says “I told you I would eat you eli.” Or something to that effect. He never says that when you can hear it during the film.

times actors werent acting…

I love this scene because it's supposed to be a triumph over evil from the outside looking in. A sinner repenting for his sins, but it's Plainview playing everyone there like a fiddle and basically getting valuable land at the cost of one humiliating baptism. He ate his pride for the sake of profit, which only makes it sadder that he couldn't do the same for his son. The one thing he couldn't hold onto in life.

Crazy how you can watch his rage build with the veins in his forehead bulging. And then they go away as he calms down a little

What a film. I actually came to watch it because Johnny Greenwood gave the score for the film, but my oh my is Daniel Day Lewis one of the greatest actors ever.

This is pure bliss. I'm a filmmaker and you won't believe the dregs I encounter who wish to be actors and have no sense of acting only having a last name belonging to some industry bigshots. This scene is so over the top but feels so lived in and real. There's nothing that feels like acting at all, it feels like Lewis was reliving some traumatic event rather than reciting lines. And that the director and DP backed off and left this scene entirely in the hands of two incredible actors is what makes this pure art.

Paul should have get a best supporting nomination that year , they robbed him of that , what a shame

Truly an underrated actor, I was expecting him to gain more recognition after he played Riddler in The Batman, I was glad when he was casted for the movie, when I came to see it, none of my peers knew who he was, and I told them "guys, you need to watch There Will Be Blood".

Seriously. It happens a lot with actors who play a role where they are really hated. His performance was highly noteworthy.
