There's only one version of this SUV that I'd buy! 2023 Hyundai Tucson review (N Line diesel Elite)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson offers SUV shoppers a heap of choice. But there's only one version I'd choose.
And it's the one I just happened to be reviewing for this test - the 2023 Hyundai Tucson Elite diesel AWD with N Line Pack. Yep, it's a mouthful, but this is the sweet spot in the Tucson range, I reckon.
That's because it gets the best and most efficient powertrain available in the Tucson line-up, while also getting the sport Hyundai N package that makes it look a bit more special, and adds the otherwise-only-in-the-Highlander LED lighting.
It's strictly a five-seater, despite having a big boot, and this is a very impressive SUV in this spec. The base petrol engine isn't great, and the mid-spec turbo petrol is hard to live with.
Tell me if you like this grade of Tucson, or if there's another spec you'd pick - or if you'd choose a different SUV or crossover altogether!

We bought our Hyundai Elite N Line diesel a few days ago. Very impressed with its performance. We have been getting anywhere from 5.7 lites per 100 klms -6.1 litres per 100 klms. Absolutely the most economical vehicle we have ever owned. And living out at Bathurst our roads are typical country roads (if you know what I mean). But this car is so smooth over all the bumps, lumps and potholes. Its just so roomy and probably the first car I can stretch my legs right out in. The front heated seatings is fantastic as I have a bad back, it relives any ache. Another feature which I personally like (which you didn't mention in this video) is the Blue link app. Which you get on your phone. Allowing you from the comfort of indoors to open doors, windows, turn on car, aircon, heated seats. How bloody good is that. Overall couldn't be any happier with this car. Just plain AWESOMENESS!!

I bought the Elite diesel with the nline package 6 months ago and still enjoy driving it every day. The performance and the economy is 2nd to none and downsizing from a 4 wheel drive due to health issues find the amount of room favourable. If your after a SUV with plenty of room, plenty of power and with awesome economy you wont be disappointed.

I was an early adopter of this gen Tucson. The N-Line and different motors were not available. I took the base model as I detest touch climate controls. I went with the 1.6t highlander. I'm not sure if they may have sorted the transmission, but I can't say I felt the lurchyness. I found the diesel a bit too noisy at higher revs, and if you're not doing long stretches of driving, one could guarantee DPF problems. The 2lt is an absolute slug. It was a bit more, but worth the price for the highlander. The cooling seats during the summer are just MAGIC! And as a photographer, the automatic tailgate is superb. Not to mention the full view of the parking camera. A quick note to anyone with kids. DO NOT get the N Line upgrade. The seat material is a filth magnet.

Hi Richard, Thanks for getting in touch. I don’t have any firm info on this but expect you’re going to be looking at more than six months. My advice is to call a few dealerships - if you live in a city, don’t limit yourself to that city. Say you live in Sydney - I’d call dealers in Bathurst, Orange, Newcastle, Goulburn etc. Regional dealers may have stock arriving sooner. There are some cars around in stock if you’re really keen and not picky about colours and okay with paying a little overs. Check Carsales. A few in QLD. Make it a road trip home!

Great review, well done.😊 Shame you need to buy a Highlander just to get an auto tailgate. Surely anyone buying a SUV these days on a new model expects this as a norm. No Hud also, (heads up display) on any models aswell, a safety must as you dont need to keep looking at your speedo in 40km zones, everything is on your windscreen. FYI, the new Nissan X-Trail and Quashqua have HUD on their upmarket models as does the CX-5. After the review you only have one to choose, the Highlander Elite Turbo Diesel...WOW. ?... Yes, all other engines avoid as they are underpowered and run from the 1.6L Turbo Petrol DCT transmission. What I don't get is the reviewer forgets to mention is there is no ad-blu system fitted to the diesel. This seems to be common thing and I consider it important. Ad-blu is a chemical that is dropped into the exhaust to super heat it. This heat not only burns more of the toxins created by the diesel but also stops build up in your exhaust systems. Long term short trips with a vehicle with a diesel not fitted with ad-blu travelling only locally, dropping off kids, shopping will eventually clog your system and its an expensive repair. The stop/start feature also doesn't help, if you know what I mean? Keep that in mind when buying a Turbo diesel. IMHO, because I like luxury and all the bells and whistles and i keep my new cars more than 10 years, I would consider the CX-5 Akera 2.5L Petrol Turbo or 2.2L Diesel Turbo in the same model. And yes, the diesel only if I was to do Urban driving aswell, allowing the exhaust to super heat.

Oddly enough, I didn’t have that same frustration in the Kia Cerato GT (review coming soon). Yeah, look, diesel pricing is a doozy. And you wouldn’t get back the 50c extra per litre (plus additional outlay) unless you do a lot of km. But then again, I know the diesel models have better resale values on the whole … sorry if I confused your decision! The car I drove was a MY22 so didn’t have the Bluelink. Good review Matt. Very good car but an example of car manufacturers gouging people and dumping junk in Australia. Why bother with the crap 2.0 litre or the 1.6T? Either bring the 2.5 litre they sell in the US, or use the 1.6T but put the 8 speed torque converter gearbox in it. That, plus the diesel option for those who see the need. Personally, I will never bring myself to buy any car with a DSG (thanks VW), nor a diesel if you are only going to use it around town at low speeds (clogged DPF anyone?). They are selling these things like hotcakes, but only because Toyota can't work out how to make enough RAV4 Hybrids. I reckon the new Xtrail is a better bet mechanically and interior.

Nice review once again Matt. As a prospect buyer of a $40,000 to $45,000 mid-spec, mid-size SUV, I drove the base model plus the Elite with 1.6T. Very impressed with the space, comfort and driving dynamics, but let down by awful drivetrain options IMO. The 2.0 atmo engine is dangerously underpowered at highway speeds. Certainly an insult from Hyundai to offer a less powerful engine than the previous model, and also lugging around more weight. As you say, the 1.6T is nice and punchy but let down by an awful DCT. The hesitancy makes it feel like a volkswagen DSG from 15 years ago. Absolute deal breaker for someone after a smooth operator (I currently have a CVT - no judgement). So there is only one decent option at over $50,000. Some choice. Diesel's are really on the way out in 2023. Do you know if it runs a Diesel particulate Filter? If so, DPFs are not friends with stop / start city driving. Fine for country driving where the exhaust temp stays high. Kia & Hyundai seem to be unique in that they don't offer a semi-decent drivetrain in entry-level mid-size SUVs. I think it will have to be a Japanese car for me.

Thanks for your thoughts mate. I agree. There will be a hybrid version (1.6t with hybrid and a DCT) soon, which is what is also used in Kia Niro and is the base engine in Europe. It should at least offer something different. Toyota really makes the class look a bit backwards. But also, the 2.5L in Outlander and X-Trail is alright, at least. PHEV in Outlander is brill, I reckon. I believe the Tucson diesel does have a DPF.

Thanks TGV! Appreciate that. And yes, I don’t think they’ll host my videos on their site…. And I’m okay with that. They get me to do plenty of work for them and this channel is very much my own thing, off my own bat. I’m loving it! And I’ve dumped that mirror noise from the newer videos as it got some unfavourable feedback! 😂

@@therightcar - Matt I've subscribed and for the record I only have 3 subs for KZread, keep up the great work. Yes I read the "is it legal to drive one handed" um of course it is if you have a manual car :), a bit hard to change gears while both hands are on the wheel to keep control of the vehicle ... great feedback, looking forward to watching all your content.

If you service it on time (or ahead of the recommended schedule, say every 7500km or 10,000km) and don’t thrash it, there’s every chance it will.

I just got the 2023 Tucson SEL (W/ convenience Pakge) - AND THE SOUND SYSTEM IS THE WORST / CHEAPEST RADIO QUALITY I have EVER HEARD !!!! I LOVE MY MUSIC and this radio was a HUGE LET-DOWN !!! They always show and talk about the BOSE radio in the Top of line trims, well there is NO BOSE system in this trim level. I have to turn the BASS Level down to -9 to make it bearable. It had a tin sound and the Bass levels are SOOOooooo bad !! This radio SUCKS!!! I now have to get an upgraded system

diesel may be lowest for fuel consumption but may have high maintenance costs along with future value up in the air as it's a diesel which may be bad for earth's atmosphere....

Diesel? Not in Europe. Now that I own my Tucson HEV a year I’d never want to go back to diesel ever. I know Australia does not get Hybrid Tucsons, but that is a real shame. A full hybrid drives so much smoother. Mine is red, the top spec with pano roof and side steps to make it even cooler.
