I did this. I bought a house with my name on all of it, with a partner whose name wasn't on any of it. My partner chipped in half of the first month's mortgage. Then for the next 3 years they didn't pay a dime. When we split up they wouldn't move out and I couldn't get them out. So I had to shoulder everything myself or have my credit destroyed. And I had to figure out how to sell a house with an unwilling party who wouldn't leave. THIS Is the kind of situation Dave is trying to help her prevent. Everyone thinks their love story is going to last forever. Please listen to the voice of wisdom from someone like myself and Dave.

She only started working in a meaningful manner in the year prior to our divorce starting and never contributed to any of the mortgage or utility payments. When we split, she left the house, but still demanded 50% of equity.

If you're not married and you're a mom, you're a single mom. Yes, someone who was abandoned during pregnancy and never had any help from the baby's father has it a lot worse than a woman who was married, got a good divorce settlement, and splits custody with an active coparent, but there are many shades of gray in between. Some single moms with no dad in the picture are high earning and went to a sperm bank, some are unemployed and don't know who the father is, but live with wealthy parents who are round the clock nannies, some have no extended family and are living with their kids in a homeless shelter. There's a wide variety of experiences under that umbrella. Just because someone else has it harder, doesn't mean you're any less single than they are. Like if I get diagnosed with cancer, I have cancer, it doesn't matter if mine is less advanced with a better prognosis than someone else.
@Chalk89
28 күн бұрын
@@rachelmaddowswife8713 I respectfully disagree. I understand your point about it being under the umbrella but as adults, we know the difference and it's incredibly disrespectful to your partner. My parents divorced, my mom never once called herself a single Mom because my dad not just contributed financially but was involved in our lives. Lastly, about your cancer, I think that's an awful analogy as well. I had skin cancer - it was benign, not a danger whatsoever. It would be in such bad faith to say to a stranger...'I was diagnosed with skin cancer...' I'm only saying so to receive some form of sympathy while not having any of the scars, battles ahead like someone who has a significant form of skin cancer.
@rachelmaddowswife8713
28 күн бұрын
@@Chalk89 I'm not talking about benign tumors, and the definition of a benign tumor is non-cancerous, cancer is a malignant tumor. If you had a benign tumor on your skin, that's by definition not cancer. I have two benign tumors on my legs, dermatofibromas, they're not skin cancer. If what you mean is that you had an early stage, easily treatable skin cancer lesion, that's fine, just say "I had a small cancerous lesion removed, thankfully it wasn't a big deal". No one is asking you to demand pity or be dramatic, if the word cancer is accurate, that's what it is. My dad had prostate cancer that was easily treated and didn't threaten his life, it was still cancer. I've had four female relatives diagnosed with breast cancer. Two were diagnosed after metastasis and died, two were diagnosed early and completely cured with double mastectomies and no chemo. All four had breast cancer. You can acknowledge that the ones who died suffered more, but we don't need to pretend the others went through nothing to honor that. You can always find someone who suffered more than you did, that doesn't mean you're not allowed to use terms that you meet the definition of for yourself. You could have five widows that have very different financial situations and social networks, all five are still widows.

So she was going to not put his name on the house (I agree, she shouldn’t) but gladly take his money for the renovation and bills?

Never buy a house with someone you aren’t married to. It barely works out for folks who are married! 😂😂😂😂
It’s easy to see why she is divorced. I feel bad for those kids.
setting the boyfriend issue aside, downsizing to a 1300 or so SQFT house from 5500 shoudlnt be a $450k house it should be a $200k-300k house. did we or Dave misunderstand her? did she mean its a 200k house and when she said 250k for the renovation did she mean 50k for the renovation or is she saying adding a room and bathroom will cost 250k extra making the total 450k which is what dave thought? how in the heck could adding one more room cost more than the whole house? even if the upgrade is just 50k, thats a headache, there are plenty of 3 bedroom 2-3 bath houses for under 300k.
@Fred2-123

Such an addition will cost much more than $50K. And $250K is just dumb. After you do $250K additions to a $200K house, you end up with a house worth about $275K.

This lady is looking for trouble.First of all she has moved a man in her house she is not married to. Now she wants to buy a house with a man she is not married to. Maybe she is not a Christian or a follower of Christ. She has money and making these choices. She will cry for these choices. Why would she even call Dave knowing he is an evangelical Christian and a believer and he is not afraid to tell people about the word of God. Do not live with a man you are not legally married to. Do not buy a house, a car, any investment with a man you are not married to. This is why I love Dave, he is worth hundreds of millions of dollars and fears God, faithful to his one legal wife and a genuine man who has integrity. He stands out for the Word in this culture where you get persecuted for your beliefs mostly by people who go to church everyday.

Also don't put your name on the deed with someone you might end up divorcing... alas technically in every state if the marriage fails divorce is a valid and possible outcome, thus don't put your name on a deed with anyone if you want to follow the reason for Dave's logic.
Divorced plus boyfriend is already grave sin. No blessings will flow.😮
For whatever reason, I have a bad feeling about the boyfriend, and NOT to make him 'husband'. The feeling I get is that he just found his meal ticket, so marriage is going to be the road to cutting her net worth in half. The buying small house and doubling the cost with renovations sounds like a nutty idea as well. Whatever she does, it should be her alone, no marriage, and get the BF to kick in for half the food and utilities and nothing else.
We desperately need more stable dads in society.
I have an idea, I'm going to call Dave Ramsey and ask what the best way to shack up is! 🙄

Maybe she didn't want to be embarrassed telling the real numbers, because she knows this is a big mistake in her heart. Maybe he loved bombed her and she is coming around for air. 3 weeks and I bet he will marry so he can walk away with a nest egg or spend them into bankruptcy. She should do a background check on Rico Suave.
Those poor kids. I can't imagine having to live with my mom and her new boyfriend in my teens. Possibly having to change schools with the move. I hope they have some stability and good ethics in dad.

She’ll probably lose some benefit she gained from the divorce
We all know Dave isn't gonna cosign buying a house with a boyfriend. Duh!
I think it is playing house. I am young 26, male, single. I am, not interesting in cohabitation. I think Dave is right. It is a roommate. I am not conservative but these men have their mind right. Marriage is a partnership (OUR). You are in finances together. Why get yourself entangled? Hell I say go further. When I get married, I am not merging my bank account and 401k. Divorce is high in the first 10 years. Someone who has to call Dave on how to split the bills knows that man ain’t the one. Because if he was, you would just figure it out.
she went through trauma with her ex, who likely bought the current house that she can't upkeep. now, for the rest of her life, she'll never trust being one with another man, and will charge them rent in her homes. very common with women 40 and up.
This woman sounds exactly like a coworker of mine. Divorce mom with a teen daughter. The BF with 💩 credit and no money moves in. They go to buy a house and she finds out that his name still on the mortgage with his ex- wife and he had a ton of credit debt he never paid.
The recap at the end is funny. All “3” points are “don’t do this if you’re not married/get married.” Unless he meant the “3 points as a joke, they’re all the same point. But I agree, do it by yourself if you’re not gonna get married. Then all the bills are paid out of one pot. You don’t have to worry about who’s paying for what. Otherwise if you are doing that, it’s up to you guys to figure out how to split it all up. I don’t think Dave has any advice on that when he doesn’t recommend split finances.
@Margatatials

yep she is already going against his advice so he doesn't have any advice on how to go about it.
I once loaned money to a bf, I had no reason not to trust him, right? Just on a whim, as I handed over the check, I grabbed it back and wrote it 'loan' on the memo line. Fast forward, blah, blah, blah, that move saved me and I was able to get a judgement. DON'T DO IT!
Why live together at all?just keep your lives separate until you guys are legally married .simple.

“I’ve been listening to you since 2007.” Then don’t do anything he says to do.
Even if you are married.... My niece inherited a house. Included her husband of six months on the deed. Several adults in the room, myself included, tried to tell her this was a bad idea. Wouldn't listen to us. A year later they get a divorce and he wants a settlement to take his name off the deed. Big loser is the ex-husband who lost a 5,500 sq ft house in the divorce and the two teenagers who now have to contend with mom's boy toy. This lady is not going to listen to Dave. If she goes through with this hairbrained idea, I give it less than a year she will be calling back crying because her boyfriend left her, she has no savings, and she is having to sell the house because the renovations went waayyy over budget and she has to sell to pay the ex-boyfriend off, and her children hate her.
This sounds like some kind of weird honeymoon feeling delusion. Sell the home, take the profit and rent something together. You’re way way way overpaying on this tiny home too.
Two teenagers are more than capable to help maintain a house. I taught my kids to do chores once they could walk. If you took it out of the toy box at the end of the day you can put it back. 😂😅
Your life is good already and you want to ruin it with your boyfriend. It’s NOT worth it. Be a blessing to your teenagers.
One of those shows I listened to twice. I’m sitting here in my 1900 sq ft. home and thinking about what it would be like living in half of this house. I looked at house taxes in Madison so I’m giving g a rough estimate of $1,000 per month. Then insurances and power bill that I’ll say $500 a month. It seems manageable if you have a job because there is NOT a mortgage. Is the boyfriend pushing you to sell? Why did you look at this house in particular and Who gave you the estimate of $250K for the addition? I suspect you are receiving alimony that would stop when you remarry. Your boyfriend is not entitled to half of the house because it’s all of YOUR money that’s buying the house. AND: ask for a prenup and see his reaction and will he agree.
It’s almost like people seeking Dave’s advice have never tuned into one of his segments.

GET MARRIED, Jessica. Thats the answer!🤦🏾♀🤣 She called to ask Ramsey Show how to split with a rommie? Having sex doent change finantial obligations? Hes your roomie, or hubby.
It’s obvious she’s not this successful boss lady Dave tried to portray her as in the beginning. The only reason she has any money is because of divorcing her ex husband. I’d bet $1000 on that. She sounds like she has the intelligence of a gold fish.
Not thinking it through.
My wife and I paid our house off around 3 mi this ago, we are debt free. I will call the show today. I hope they answer me.
The caller should get married first before buying the new house. That way when she’s married she can guilt trip the new husband to spend his money on buying the house & then when he becomes the second ex-husband she’ll get the house. You would think she would have learned this from her first marriage.
