The only one I met, walked up as I was tying my shoelace at a pet expo. She stood over me, licked my face when I looked up, then proceeded to lean on me. The owner was trying to get control, but we were all laughing so hard, it became a pile of people & dog. I just laid (laughing) under the pile and hugged that sweet doggo as she licked my face. We never did figure out why she decided I needed a bath.

Can confirm the leaning. I was a fast food delivery guy many years ago and one of our regular customers had a wolfhound which got to know me pretty well. As I delivered the food, he would always come up to me and lean his entire bodyweight on me. Don't know why they do that - maybe it's their way of saying "I like you"?

Grail is such an esteemed gentleman! My grandparents had a Wolfhound named Lucien, there are photos of 3-4 year old me riding him. When I was a baby crawling around he would watch me, and if I was going to close to the stairs or something dangerous, he would pick me up by my diaper or shirt and carry me to his bed. Lots of home videos and photos of that happening. Lucien lived to be 13 (1995-2008)

I once lived in the Arctic. We had no vet. As the Emergency nurse, people sometimes brought their pets to me. Since I had recently received a wrist slapping for bringing animals in to the Emerg, I remember suturing the leg of Walter, a gorgeous Wolfhound, in the back of a teensy car. I had the opportunity to interact with a baby Irish Wolfhound one time, at an Irish heritage and cultural festival. He was about 8 months old, and he hadn't learned how to control his drool. He had to wear a beach towel as a bib. He didn't have any idea how big he was (already almost 100 pounds), and he would try to cuddle on the lap of anyone who would sit down in the grass for him. When it came time for the parade, they kept a kid's wagon available for him to hop into if he got tired from walking. It took 3 people to pull it once he got in!

Many years ago, my aunt owned an Irish wolfhound. He was truly a gentle giant, but surprisingly, he excelled as a guard dog too! With just a simple act of placing his paws atop their 6-foot fence and giving a discerning look at anyone approaching, nobody dared to set foot in their yard! 😂

If you don't know anything about this breed and thus that they really aren't likely to do anything to you, and just happen upon one, it would be really intimidating! If they ran full-speed into you, you're going down, even without "aggression" as such!

  • @broEye1

    @broEye1

    4 ай бұрын

Yeah, one look would scare most out. Though what I've heard he probably wouldn't care much if someone came in, as their breed doesn't have much sense of "territory", just as long as he felt they weren't going to hurt your aunt or anyone else he saw as family. Though, if he did sense a threat to his people, he'd be pretty quick to demonstrate how fitting his breed name is.

The neighbors behind our house always had three of these dogs, and aside from going to shows, they spent their time in their fenced-off back yard, or under their house in a basement that was accessible to the dogs 24/7 via a pair of always-open Bilco doors. I pet all of their dogs through their fence from the time that I was a little kid until I was tall enough to reach over their fence in order to pat them on their heads. Our neighbors across the street had a Great Dane, which was a nice dog, but somewhat skittish, unlike the Wolfhounds, which were always extremely friendly to everyone who approached them.

They’re known to many as gentle giants as they are never aggressive. This doesn’t mean they won’t protect their families if called upon. I’ve always said that large large dogs don’t need to be vicious or aggressive to protect your property. Just their size and bark will keep trespassers away.

We had an Irish Wolfhound we named Freya while I was growing up! Such sweet, sensitive dogs, I literally couldn't think of a better temperament for a family pet. When we went camping and I (a short tween at the time) walked her, we'd get a lot of comments about how I should put a saddle on her lol! We had a tiny Rat Terrier at the same time named Ruby, who Freya worshipped. Watching them play together was so funny, because it was the one time Freya seemed truly aware of how much bigger she was and was always so careful and gentle to not crush her playmate. Meanwhile Ruby was, well, a terrier... So she played by going for the throat lol. Like I said, Freya worshipped Ruby, and Ruby tolerated Freya. Freya did eventually get a taste of her own medicine in the worship department; when I got my rescue dog, he absolutely ADORED Freya! She'd try to walk into the living room, and he'd just throw himself down, belly-up, at her feet, all "Hi, hi I love you, please notice me, I love you...!" Freya was unimpressed lol.

I cleaned for a family with an Irish Wolfhound. They would put her outside when I cleaned and she would lurk around outside the windows of whatever room I was in, waiting for me to be done to give her lots of pets. She was so tall she could stand on all four feet and just look through the windows. She was a gentle, beautiful girl. An interesting fact is that the original Irish Wolfhound’s (wolfdog) lineage was lost to history after the last wolf was killed in Ireland. The modern breed is quite new (mid to late 1800s) vs the old wolfdog which went probably back to Roman trading with the Gaels.

They got along great, and we were treated to the sight of triple stacked dogs - the basset hound standing under the chest of the German Shepherd, who was herself standing upright beneath the chest of the Irish Wolfhound. I wish I'd taken a picture.

My high school friend had one, too. My friend lived in a tiny condo. When I met the dog, I was tripping cause he was huge! We sat on the sofa and the dog came up to me and got in my face! I thought it was going to eat me! lol. The dog was way bigger than me. I was 100 lbs. He was gentle and calm. I’m an animal lover so any animal makes me happy. I live in a tiny home now and have 2 chihuahuas and a new puppy who is some mix breed. Her paws are as big as my hands and she just made 4 mo old. She doubled in size since we got her a month ago. I laid next to her and she’s over 1/2 my height already. She’s still getting used to her size and is still uncoordinated. She has puppy brain but does really cute things. She’s starting to copy the other pups and yesterday she spilled her water so I threw 2 paper towels down and used my foot to wipe it. She looked at me and stuck her foot on the paper towel and tried to copy. I couldn’t believe it! She’s smart. When she wants water, she will take her bowl to the water dispenser.

It's funny, but in Sydney a few weeks ago (I am sure these two were outliers) two Irish Wolfhounds attacked a woman walking a Jack Russell. The poor little dog died and the woman ended up in hospital in quite a mess. Personally I like these big fellas and have come across them a few times and they were in no way threatening. I'm amazed that this pair were so damn aggressive. Maybe it had something to do with their upbringing and upkeep.

Also, both wolfhounds were off their leashes and their owner fled the scene when he realized the dogs were attacking this woman and her dog. When dogs are out on their own, they can revert to 'pack' behavior and become quickly dangerous.

I have experience with other huge breeds and of the sighthound nature (I've had a Great Pyrenees and Borzois, Greyhounds), but the really short life expectancy is the reason why I don't think I could ever get one of these guys. It'd break my heart to know the change of my Hound living up to 10 years is really low. Actually already around 6-7 years, one should start preparing themselves, that the dog has reached the breed's average life expectancy. They're one of the most, if not the most at risk breed for bloat and pneumonia and also the risk of bone cancer and other cancers at a young age are more common than most breeds.

My Mother loves this breed. At their place right now, there is a 9 year old beautiful boy, which is the second Irish Wolfhound we ever had. I had the pleasure to grow up along these dogs, and let me tell you, I never felt this loved by an animal. Always greeted for 15 minutes at the door when coming back, they are a massive loving fluff. Sadly, because of their size and weight, they are almost guaranteed to be subject to osteoarthritis. Their rear tends to struggle a lot around 8 to 9 yo, which makes it very painful for them to stand up. Also you need a massiv trunk in your car, cause this beast needs to visit the vet quite a lot in the last quarter of their life, and if that trunk is not wide or high enough, this will be very painful for the Wolfhound. A ramp to get them inside the trunk is also almost mandatory, as lifting 70 kgs is not the easiest thing to do. I now prefer tall dogs a lot more than smaller ones thanks to this breed, and I will never forget the love I received from both of them for near 20 years of my short 25 years life.

Wolfhounds and other big dogs (and horses for that matter) having such moderate temperaments is because of their size, not despite it. People who create dog breeds are not idiots, and having something that big be anything less than calm is a recipe for disaster, so they are deliberately bred to be mellow (see also Clydesdales vs ponies). Hence why great danes and wolfhounds are chill as can be, and terriers (bread to kill rodents) and dachshunds (bred to run into a weasels own den and chase it out) are quite fiery.

And if you ever get to know one you are forever touched by their love for you which is in my experience unique to the breed. They are extremely intelligent and emotionally in tune with their humans.

We met an Irish wolfhound at the tulip festival this year, my Shiba Inu was walking back and forth under the wolfhound’s stomach, wolfhounds are so tall.

Irish Wolfhounds are even tempered and goofy loving babies to their families. I had one as a teenager, he was a very sweet boy. I wish he had lived longer, only 5 short years. R.I.P. Glenamada Excalibur Calaban, we just called him Whiskey.

I wanted one for a long time but their short lifespan put me off, so we rescued a wolfhound cross blue heeler, who’s currently ten and a half and luckily has avoided the health issues these beautiful dogs have.

I used to work at a boarding kennel & was honored to care for one of the gorgeous gentle giants. When I walked him, I'm only 5foot one inch tall & weigh 105 pounds, I always laughed because it felt like walking a pony. Wolfhounds are truly gentle & calm.❣🐾❣🐾❣

Dogs at the extreme ends of dogdom (size, weight, temperament, etc.) are less common because they are extreme. Not everyone would like to have a dog the size of a small horse, or with nonstop energy like a Belgian Malinois. Same goes for looks. A Chinese Crested Dog or an English bulldog appeal to some people, others prefer more common, standard appearances in their dogs. Lots of people have Golden Retrievers, but others prefer short-coated breeds. Different strokes for different folks, right?

@@LadyEmu@ronsamborski6230 sounds more like a teacher giving information, rather than disagreeing with you. At first, I thought he was, but as I continued reading what he wrote, he reminded me so much of my elder brother. He writes the same way, but would never mean to give offense or put someone’s opinion down. He tends to be very awkward in how he talks or write to other people, but loves to exchange information and/or give another viewpoint. Absolutely brilliant, but awkward. I’ve never seen an IW in person, and would love to. My favorite breed is the Pomeranian and I have a lovely 5pound one. But I love all dogs, even though I don’t personally want a large one.

@@ronsamborski6230 Yes ! Sometimes people get the dog they fell in love with as a child. I wish more would get a pet that FIT their life and lifestyle. It would suit the dog/pet and many wouldn't be in shelters/rescues.

@@LadyEmu I hope you weren’t upset or offended by my comment. I think it’s awesome that you have three Irish Wolfhounds. My only in-person experience with one was many years ago. I was a utility service person (cable TV), and as I approached a house, a huge IW came around the corner to greet me. The homeowner yelled to me, “He’s friendly, he’s friendly!” He was concerned that I would be freaked out by his dog, but I knew of their good natured demeanor and had no problem with the dog at all. I wish you the best with your trio of Wolfhounds and everything else. 👍🏼

I’m not a groomer but I was taught how to groom by a poodle breeder and my dog is over 12 years now. And I must say this lady is amazing. The dogs she has groomed and how she has to make decisions about the dogs on the fly, I’m very impressed.
