My mother had two of these, and one day they managed to skip out the door and run away. They're a bit goofy, modest and just so chilled out, but after running away they came back with their faces covered in blood. Turns out they ripped the neighbor's rabbits apart. Funny how a cute dog like that turn into what's also called a Russian Wolf Hound.

Such a stunner! My first Borzoi was Dimitri, black with 4 white socks, a white tipped tail, and a blaze on his chest. He was huge and "thick" and lived to be 15. My second one, Madame Kovaleski (her AKC name - we called her Kova) was white with black spots. She was more petite and "narrow". They were both the most loving, loyal (and such sensitive) dogs I've ever had. I grew up with a borzoi as the family dog, and it cannot be understated how sweet and gentle with people they are. He was with us from when I was barely one year old, to when I was 14, when he passed from old age. We'd brush and bathe him ourselves, outside in the yard, and after you'd swear it had snowed, he'd shed so much white fur. He'd also catch birds out of the air and then be very confused about it.

Interesting fact: in Russian they're called "Борзая" - "Borzáya" in feminine gender. Because it's adjective (but now we often use it as a noun) addresses to words "breed" or "dog" which are feminine gender in Russian. And the "Borzoi" is a variation in masculine gender of this word and we don't use it. Actually we call every greyhound "Borzáya" - it's a translation of greyhound breed group in Russian. And specifically this long-hair breed in video called "Русская борзая" - Rússkaya Borzáya (literally Russian Greyhound).

Sighthound Underground somestimes has some, and National Borzoi Rescue Foundation (NBRF) had a few this year and has quite a few available recently/upcoming now that theyve been able to bring some rescues overseas from the areas around Ukraine! I'd also recommend speaking to breeders of borzois or similar breeds, as they're typically in-the-know on who has retired adults available as pets. I learned about my guy from a breeder who had a friend who was training a pup who had severe sun damage from being left outside during 2020. After introducing raw food and supplementary fruits/veggies on top of kibble. Sevi now has a silky thick coat and is a perfect guy!

Zois are usually pretty easy to groom! They shed a lot, but since the fur isn't as thick as with many other long haired breeds (like rough collies), it's easy to get all the way to the bottom. The long hair on the neck and the back of the back legs tend to tangle, so I'd recommend brushing those parts weekly to bi-weekly, but the rest of the fur isn't usually easy to tangle. I brush my boy properly only once a month (except for the mentioned neck and back legs I do at least twice a month) and he doesn't develop tangles in that time. Brushing him doesn't take long either.

Small correction: According to our breed history from Russian and Ukraine, Borzoi descend from a "Saluki-type hound that was crossed with a native Russian breed" in order for them to survive the harsh Siberian winters. :) Our first breed standard was written in the mid-1600's, but unfortunately a lot of the records detailing pedigrees were lost during the fall of the last Czar. So we are still in the process of piecing the history of the Borzoi back together.
