There is now a legal aftermarket cat replacement for Toyota Prius’s in California!

This video covers the aftermarket parts that have been approved by California for Toyota Prius applications. It gets into the details of why for the most part these don’t make sense versus just buying the original Toyota equipment parts.

    Hi Colby, is there big difference in repair cost (both labor and parts) in your muffler shop between between Gen 3 Prius Plug-In and regular Gen3 Prius? I've plug-In 2014, hope the catalytic converter assembly interchangeable since the cars looks inside and outside exactly the same (just different HV battery plus charging port) so you don't have to order anything special and repair cost should be about the same - right?

    Hey Colby, Hope you are doing well. So I recently had my two Catalytic converters from my 2022 Ram 1500 stolen. I found a guy in the forums that is willing to ship me the OEM ones he removed from the same truck but he is Kansas. Will these Cats being outta state work out here in california if they are OEM from same model truck? Thanks for the help

    I would be cautious with buying used catalytic converters from anyone. In theory they should be okay. I would call the dealer and get a part number and confirm the sellers parts are a match.

    thanks. good analysis. my Gen 1Cat, according to Toyota, needs rerplacing. (california). price has come down. 2.3k. out the door, work done by them. as of 5/15/23. Protection is another matter. IMO, aluminum will not prevent thievery, maybe slow it down. Steel bars and plates, welded, seem to work. Also rebar. thanks again.

    Hi! Colby. Hope this message finds you. I have 2013 Prius and about a month ago my cat converter was stolen. So I put a cheap one for temporary and looking for an oem part. I saw that one in Craigslist but it was 2016, so it looks different than what I have. My question is , do you think that it is possible to cut and weld to mine and pass a smog check?

  • @mufflertech

    @mufflertech

    No. It’s not that it’s not possible to cut up the pieces and assemble something that would physically work, it’s that it won’t pass the visual part of the smog check. This video has some dated information and we are now using the Magnaflow part as a viable option, we currently have them in stock if you’d like to call the shop 916-421-0399.

    Hey Colby I wanted to ask here about if you had any Honda Odyssey’s, Toyota TundraPickup truck’s or Honda CR-V’s come in with into shop with stolen Cats? I was wondering cause the Toyota Tundra has been a target for Catalytic Converters and I’m surprised you don’t have a video of one of those. Now for the Odyssey, I might get a Honda Odyssey Gen Two and I’m worried about my Catalytic converter getting stolen cause I’ve seen a couple people with Gen 2 Odyssey’s become a victim of Catalytic Converter theft. I also noticed that the CR-V’s have been a target for Catalytic Converter theft too, my aunt has a 2008 Honda CR-V and had its Cat stolen (At least in Toronto where I live). Hopefully someday you can make a video of those Three cars and share protections of the Catalytic converter.

    Hey Matthew, thanks for the comment. Yes we see Odyssey’s, and the other vehicles you mentioned. I’ve included them in other videos about insurance coverage and lists of vehicles to be aware of. I haven’t done specific ones on any of those but sooner or later I’ll get to them. It’s difficult to take time away from the customers and cars to do any of these so I do what I can. Thanks for watching and stay tuned!

  • @mufflertech

    Technically not legal in California, New York, or Colorado. OEM cats are specific to each vehicle. The Corolla’s are not PZEV rated and their cats don’t have the same conversion capability.

    Although we have seen your model periodically for a stolen underbody cat, it’s pretty infrequent. The reason this matters is in order for a company to justify production of of a part such as a shield there needs to be a high demand for it to make financial sense. Until your specific vehicle becomes a higher target I doubt we will see anything released for it.

    Doesn’t the cat do cat things and keep the cars ecu happy? Whether it has a sticker on it or not?? I get you are trying to get business for your shop but the eBay cat will work it’s a direct replacement just because you cross state lines the car doesn’t stop working.

  • @mufflertech

    @mufflertech

    Ай бұрын

    You’re missing the point. This is a video that applies to California and the other states that have adopted our rules. Just because a cat solves what the ECU is looking for doesn’t mean it has the correct certification to pass a visual test. Furthermore, the reason that the eBay and cheaper parts are less money is because they have less precious metal in them, they may keep the light off initially, but they will fall off their conversion rate much faster and will need to be replaced a lot sooner.
