I liked Frederickson from the very beginning when he responded to Sharpe's question on what makes a good soldier. "Keeping his mouth shut when he's asked damn fool questions by a superior officer sir. He might have been a gentleman but he was a soldier and he didn't care about your rank if you were a bad officer. I believe Sharpe instantly liked him because of the smile after his response.

He stops Sharpe giving him a tip and very quietly offers sherry, knowing that Sharpe probably won't know what to ask for. It's noticeable that Jane says thank you while Sharpe is still working what is the right thing to say. The purchase system was abused, certainly, especially by extremely wealthy wanna be soldiers. However, the rank system in the British Army was very very strict. A captain could not hope to gain a permanent promotion to Major unless a Major was either killed or left the service. The Major...who probably paid through the nose to get into the officer corps and then purchase his way up the chain would expect to get some recompense. Remember, the ranks are a pyramid. For every Ensign, there are a lot fewer Leutenants, for every Lt, fewer Captains, fewer Majors than Captains and on and on. When a vacancy occurred at the higher rank, it was usually filled by a brevet, or temporary promotion. Sharpe received several. When an arrangement was made with the officer leaving, his replacement would take the permanent rank and the Brevet would step down to his prior rank. A man could not simply step up and buy a Colonelcy. One bypass was for an extremely wealthy man to form his own Regiment (as Simmerson did.) He could then appoint his own officers, usually relatives or friends. However, if an officer proved to be a total incompetent or a coward, he could be removed and would NOT be able to sell his rank...he was out. Of course there was another reason for Britain to set up a system where the officers were usually rich or titled...such officers were less likely to stage a French style Revolution against their own class. Today it seems inconceivable but in the 18th and 19th Century monarchies lived in terror of being overthrown. The beheading of Charles I stuck in the English mind for centuries.
