well, Sharpe never fought against the Bourbons so technically they were not his enemy. However, being acquitted by a colonel who he had shot in the arse is incredibly amusing.

Spoiler alert: For anyone wondering why Sharpe looked awkward shaking hands toward the end, during this chapter, Fredrickson, and Sharpe came across Luci at her house 3 days after the Colonel was shot. Fredrickson fell in love with Luci, and made it clear, as well as invited Sharpe to his wedding as best man. Shortly after, Fredrickson went out to Duco's eye glasses maker and wanted to question the person who makes his glasses, on the location of Duco's. Meanwhile, Sharpe stayed back to heal at Luci's house, and eventually was sleeping with Lucie, in which upon Fredrickson's return he realized this. Basically this is the only part in this entire series I was so mad with Sharpe for betraying Fredrickson, after all he has done for Sharpe.

Sharpe let Wigram shoot first but he completely missed then Sharpe intentionally shot Wigram in the ass to teach him a lesson. It was only later when Sharpe learned that Wigram was to be the judge for his court martial and choose whether Sharpe lived or died that he regretted it. I'm sure Wigram still had trouble sitting down when he had to make that verdict of not guilty.

Evidence was fabricated by Major Duco, who is the type of person to do anything to get someone dismissed or killed so they can win the war. Which in other ppls eyes is a coward thing. Especially in this scene they discharged his case and let sharpe go. I gotta say the enemy has alot of respect. Because with the help of the madam and general Calvet (mainly Calvet) who could've said that major Duco had planned it all to get sharpe killed and or framed.

Prima facae and Habaeus Corpus are two prime rules for establishing a case. The prosecution did not establish the Colonel as a reliable witness (since he wasn't there in court) and his seemingly tampered statement means the prosecution's evidence is already flawed. Fredrickson won because the defence had a stronger witness in Calvet, and that Sharpe had found the treasure (minus all the gold the Italians stole)

I did always find the the actress Cécile Paoli who played Lucille to be rather lovely. She wasn't the typical beauty but there was just something about those big eyes and how so gentle... so demure she was. It was a shame they killed off her character for the comeback movie Sharpe's Challenge in 2006.

During this time the Duke of York was busy reforming the officer system ,with the Royal Military College being established in 1801 and the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich even earlier for artillery and engineers. What is truly unusual for Sharpe is not his battlefield commission, is that his promotions are done entirely without purchase, although his rank has been sold before. Sgt to Ensign to Lt = Wellington's battlefield promotion, plus a default promotion as Rifles do not have ensigns Lt to Captain = gazetted by Wellington after the disaster at the bridge that got Major Lennox killed Captain to Lt = his rank is cancelled after Lawford is seriously injured and he loses his sponsor Lt to Captain = fully confirmed after the successful siege of Badajoz Captain to Major = the Prince Regent himself promotes Sharpe , being a fan of "Dick" Major to Lt Col = Sharpe is commissioned by Wellington again to serve under the Prince of Orange. Sharpe also gets recognized as the commander of the South Essex before he leaves the army for good.
