By the standards of his time, Sharpe lost the duel the second he resorted to gutter-snipe brawling. What little reputation Sharpe had on his own side would have been irredeemably blackened had his superior not intervened.

Considering he was going to shot him in the head, he should be grateful, especially after proposing an apology via a plea for mercy, which he himself did not show while taking aim at Sharpe. Fascinating how instantaneously "humble and meek" we can become when it is our head on the block.

@@daxasd3270 Most of the fencing and/or swordsmanship in this was beyond bad. You want to see decent swordsmanship in film watch some of the particularly old films with Christopher Lee and his generation of actors (particularly the fellow Englishmen) - they knew how to actually fence (and in Lee's case as a veteran how to fight in general) prior to acting so there was far less to fake.

I've been watching these clips today in covid lockdown (knew of the show but never watched) and have been noticing a lot of familiar, talented faces from recent film. Looks like Sharpe gave a lot of people a springboard into their careers. Not just Sean Bean, who's been a favorite of mine since childhood. He was already in movies I loved, playing good & bad guys, but when I saw him in Lord of the Rings he was a perfect actor for that character, & I shed a tear when he died so heroically.

"You won't die from a bullet up the bum." Well, he very well might. Any penetrating gun shot wound at this time would be extremely dangerous due to the risk of infection, especially if you are shot in a body part covered by clothes, because the bullet will take with it fragments of the fabric and drag them deep into your body, plus the wound is way too high for an amputation to stop the infection from spreading.

@Andy Man It's not a comparison between training and brute force, both of which play a more or less equal role when it comes to a swordfight. it's a comparison between two different styles, one of which aims to overwhelm the opponent quickly with physical strength while the other emphasises the maneuvers intended to outlast the opponent. Sharpe should favour the former as it is much more practical on a battlefield where you are liable to face multiple opponents in quick succession, whereas the latter is more suited to the duel and is as much to dazzle the spectators as to win the fight.

Fine court swords that will draw blood on the arms or face but are not normally lethal, at that point the duel is ended. Pistols is more like "brave enough to face a shot but smart not to do so." A proper duel gives honour to both people.
The first guy was quite convincingly played. And the duel was interestingly staged to show their skill matched but Sharpe being consistently over-powered by the larger heavier man.

Why is it that Sharpe, who ONLY knows how to do THREE things (and has told people any number of times)HOW TO FIGHT, HOW TO KILL, AND HOW TO WIN!!! and these people never seen to figure it out? His sword in the early movies (usually described as a butcher knife, that he TOOK off a French cavalryman, and too long to be used from foot (though Sharpe is tall enough to carry it off)), he has used to literally smash through his opponents guard.

@@fooman2108 In one of the books Sharpe is lying seriously wounded in a "hospital". His sword (whichever it is) has been lost. Harper gets a heavy cavalry sword, which by its nature is weighted for cleaving blows from horseback. He takes it to the smithy where it is ground sharp and the hard guard sawn and filed to change the grip to a pattern Sharpe uses. Patrick puts in his hand which is the start of his eventual recovery. I cannot remember which book, but this being YT somebody probably will. The nature of the sword and its modifications says a lot about how Sharpe uses a sword.
