@@justinn8541 I feel like his fight with Queen is just an extension and closure of his arc that starts in Whole Cake Island, which is basically "Sanji's relationships with Judge and Sora, respectively, and how those relationships informed his moral compass." Queen is not a new arc for Sanji in and of itself; it's an extension of his relationship to Judge.

I get the feeling that if it wasn't for Zeff and the Baratie, Sanji may have had a mental breakdown at age 11. After, or perhaps during Whole Cake Island, it was probably only thanks to the Straw Hats that he didn't have a breakdown.

There's another possibility on 'keep your feet dry'. Red Leg Zeff was known for being a killer, his boots covered in the blood of his victims. From that standpoint Sanji keeping his feet dry might be Zeff's hope/reminder/wish for Sanji to be a better man than Zeff was. After all, it was being bloodthirsty enough to attack a defenseless passenger ship during a storm that was the doom of Zeff's crew and leg.

Many people wonder how Sanji and Zeff got off that rock because the scene ends there haha 😂 In the manga, right after they have this conversation about the All Blue, a ship finally is seen in the distance. Crying, Sanji starts waving and yelling "Hey!! Here!! Please save the old geezer!" Zeff wistfully talks about how wonderful it would be to have a restaurant in the middle of the sea so anyone who is stranded and starving can have this ray of hope. Sanji says "we'll do it, I'll help you, so don't die!" 😢

Life-long One Piece fan here and massive fan of your work, Georgia. I wanted to share with you the meaning of "keep your feet dry" because I think you'll love it. In the Manga, Zeff's pirate nickname is "Red leg Zeff" because his fearsome kicks would stain his boots red in the blood of his enemies. He taught Sanji this style, who's nickname becomes "Black leg Sanji", and I believe that Zeff was basically telling him from experience to "Stay out of trouble, keep the blood off your feet.". It's an incredibly subtle nod to the anime and really shows the love the director had for the die-hard fans as well. Your videos are amazing, and thank you for making content on this incredibly therapeutic show!

That's a nice sweet spin on it but unfortunately not the case. "Keep your feet dry" is just the best available translation because it's a similar saying we have in English. but the original Japanese line is literally "don't catch a cold". It's a protective, caring sentiment that a parent might say. Basically Zeff is saying "take care of yourself, son" 💗 Very sweet!

I think a lot of people forget (especially since they don't mention it in the live action), but the whole reason the Baratie even exists is because of what Zeff and Sanji went through. Zeff never wanted anyone to experience going without food for so long on the ocean, so he created an ocean-going restaurant, at which anyone would be welcome.

One thing you said that stuck to me: "His dream can live on through this other person" That is gonna be a running theme in One Piece. Inherited will. The dreams shared among people, living on through those who share the dreams In the anime and manga, there are several moments where Zeff looks at Sanji with this face of happiness. Zeff is happy to see his son getting a chance to go after his dream. It's the reason Zeff likes Luffy so much. Luffy keeps chasing his dream. Zeff had to give up on chasing his own dream, but as Sanji shared his dream to find the All Blue, he wants Sanji to pay the life debt not by serving under him all his life, but to reach his own dream. Their common dream. And it culminated in Zeff and all the other cooks acting like they hate Sanji's cookings, acting like it's disgusting. All to chase Sanji out of Baratie and into All Blue. And then showing that Sanji was on the other side of a door, hearing what they said as they told Luffy why they claimed it was shit. Sanji, crying as he says to himself "I can hear you, you idiots." I think you'd like one aspect of One Piece. There is a lot of men showing their emotions in a healthy way, crying. And not the Hollywood single sexy tear cry, but straight up bawling their eyes out, snot running through cheecks. Because men can cry. And that is perfectly okay, even necessary at times.

There is a single moment when they are dividing the bagged food and Zeff is threatening him not to bother him that little Sanji gets this sad but slightly fearful expression, almost like he's bracing for something, its the tiniest nod to the fans that are in the know about the rest of Sanji's origins. I seriously loved the kid actor for Sanji, he did such a fantastic job and its a shame that if they ever did get to do the rest of the back story he would be too old to play an even younger Sanji.

There was a sweet feeling I couldn't put into words, that Sanji met Zeff as a helpless child that Zeff protected, and then, when Zeff was attacked, his son, now a grown man under his wing, stood up and protected his dad. Zeff and Sanji are the cutest father-son pair I've seen in a while. Two gruff men trying to clumsily look out for each other even if they drive each other up the wall. I think their clashing was the natural symptom of a young man who was ready to leave the nest. Zeff realized that, and Sanji initially didn't, IMO.

I understand entirely about teasing as affection. I do that myself. The way I see it, if I don't care about someone, it's not worth my time to come up with silly, fun, and creative little jabs like that. There is so much more to Sanji's past that isn't revealed in the series until around 800 or so chapters into the manga (if the live action series runs long enough, I imagine it'll be around season 9 or 10) that really adds even more depth to his character. Stuff like that is why I say you should read the manga or watch the anime and do a separate analysis of each character in that version. A really good analysis here. In the manga we saw a lot more of Sanji growing up with Zeff on Baratie that adds even more depth to Sanji's character and builds even more on the relationship between them. I'm hoping live action season two will show some of that in flashbacks as there's one character trait about Sanji that didn't come up yet in season one but will be relevant in the Alabasta Saga. In the meantime, I can't wait to see your next character analysis. Wonder whether it will be Zoro or Usopp. Also curious whether you're only going to do the Strawhats. I'd kind of like to see analyses of Garp, Coby, Arlong, and Buggy as well (although, in the case of Buggy, most of his character development happens well after what we see in the live action series so far).

Being "Red-Leg Zeff" and choosing to sacrifice not just his primary means of attack/defense but also the crux of his identity as a person(his feet ARE his weapons after all), to save a child he just met is the essence of the caring person he is underneath all the rough edges, and that's what I love about him and Sanji

Flashbacks are often the butt of the joke in anime, but the author of One Piece uses them so effectively. They always completely change your understanding of previous scenes. Silly random things are suddenly emotional and meaningful, and the conflicts are heightened by new context about the stakes or motivations.

The relationships that develop in a restaurant kitchen are so... strange and specific, I have to congratulate the show on capturing that odd mix of competition, ego and cameraderie. I worked as a cook for 9 years, and during service we would bicker, argue, joke around, get frustrated and sometimes even vent violently (on inanimate objects, i.e. kicking a bin in frustration), but at the end of the shift, we would all work together to clean down, chefs clearing and wiping tables if they needed to, to get everyne done at the same time, so we could hang out and relax until the manager was done, and we could all leave together. If anything, and I mean ANYTHING threatened a member of our team, we were all ready to go to war for that person. Never assume that just because the person waiting your table is a minimum wage college student that nobody will care if you're rude and insulting, at a good restaurant the cooks in the back are just as ready to kick you out as anyone else, and they AREN'T being paid to be nice to you.

I love these analysis videos. And I love how you point out that it’s not exactly what is said but how it’s said. Even in an aggressive tone it’s still done with tenderness. The apology is very different in the manga/anime, where it has a traditional dogeza of gratitude by Sanji as he is about to leave. It is very impactful in its own right, whereas this one is far more nuanced. I'd love to know how you'd have interpreted some of Sanji's behavior if you knew things about him that are revealed later in the series. Little Eggplant probably has one of the most impactful backstories in the series. Just think about it: why would a kid his age be on his own, serving as a cook in a galley, with parents nowhere in sight? There is history there, and it isn't one that involves roses and sunshine.

Whenever I hear "keep your feet dry" I think about Zeff's moniker "Red Leg" and how his leg was red because his boot was dripping in blood. I think he doesn't really mean "don't get blood on your shoes," because the Japanese expression basically means don't catch a cold. Must say more about me than the story that it's what I think of.

!!!BIG BIG BIG SPOILER ALERT ABOUT SANJI´s EXTENDED BACKSTORY!!! - - FOR ANYBODY WHO DOESN´T READ THE MANGA OR WATCH THE ANIME AND ISN´T ON THE CURRENT STATE OF THE STORY - turn arround! - - - - - Ok, here we go. - Sanji grew up as a failed genetic experiment, and his biological father abused him for not being a perfect child soldier. After Sanji's mom passed away (the only person who truly loved Sanji), Sanji's biological dad put an iron mask on him and abandoned him in a prison cell. One day, Sanji managed to escape from his abusive dad's clutches and met Zeff afterward. Nobody ever sacrificed anything for Sanji or accepted him the way he is until Zeff came and became the dad he never had. Sanji truly appreciates and loves Zeff. Also, when Sanji was a toddler, he used to feed mice, and his biological father really despised that because, in his opinion, strong people should look out for the weak ones.
