@@roubinnick honestly the entire animation team did a phenomenal job. What's cool is that with the action scenes, we actually got reference footage of real martial artists doing stunt and action choreography. Id agree that the bullying definitely made Mizu stronger to a point, but the Mizu we follow through the story is tempered with glimpses of kindness and happiness in between the harsh reality. The blacksmith and the horse tamer. Those times allowed her to 'come up for air' just long enough to not truly become heartless.

  • @gameoverinsertcointocontin8102

The one big theme the series seemed to have is (self)-loathing. Mizu hates who she is, she hates one side of her heritage. The main villain is likewise broken despite incredibly smart and competent at whatever craft he wants to master, he hates himself with passion and lots of survivors guilt on top of that and indulging in every possible perversion just to dull the pain for a moment.

  • @Dryltd

To answer the question. I would say Sword Father made her stronger not the bullying. The bullying made her put on a cold face to the world. Cornered animals will strike out. Even if we say the bullying created focus by removing distraction. What was chosen to focus on was still self destructive. Which I notice happens without a mentor of some type.

Your analysis aren't in-depth enough, feels like a missed opportunity, but I can't expect you to know without experiencing it. Mizu's self hatred is very relatable to those who live between worlds. Like Mizu, they fixate on individuals responsible for their predicament, likely their parents, because cultural change on an individual level is impossible. Even if their parents are no longer alive, they still have to live with the problem. Mizu needs to find her place in the world, in countries or groups that are more like-minded to her or live in solitude.

Sometimes you feel like "why should i care while no one cared about me?". Then you realize that you can't ignore it. Then you help and eventually feel angry at yourself for that afterwards because "you are too good and people abuse it".

It's not the bullying that makes you stronger, it's thw will to move on; even just to keep moving in spite of the added pressure, and weight of it all. Some times you must carry it with you for a while, but eventually one must find a way to move on, particularly when a much heavier burden comes along. One must know what is required, and what is worth striving for. Her drive isn't a "GOOD GUY GOAL" but, it is a net good in her mind, even though she sees collateral damage (in any case) worth it; this is clearly not at an healthy amount for her. She does learn from those whom she meets along the way, but ultimately has to accept herself as herself before growing in an significant way. So no, the bullying didn't make her stronger, she chose to become tougher in order to survive thw harsh reality that left her alone, independent, and in the cold. . . Until she wasn't.

  • @MrHarbltron

I was bullied quite a bit when I was younger, and it truly has made it very difficult to trust people. Strength is a complicated concept; is someone who is emotionally open stronger because they can bear their heart to someone, or is it the person who can keep their emotions under lock-and-key? I've come to believe the former is true, that vulnerability is strength, but it's very hard to fight against that deep-seated distrust and fear of ridicule and betrayal.

I gave this show a try on a whim one Friday evening. I watched them all. It was about 2AM Saturday morning when I finished the last episode. Worth it. Amazing show. Mizu is an amazing character. Morally grey I guess might be one way to describe her but that may be too simple. She's laser focused on her goal if nothing else. I also liked how the show displayed how her physical conditioning enables her to be a great fighter. Her apprenticeship with the blacksmith, her martial arts training and her wearing the training weights probably make her considerably above average, if not exceptionally, physically fit. Even with all that, she takes her lumps. She gets really roughed up a few times. If nothing else, I'm just saying I don't think she falls under the "Mary Sue" trope.

She does have a few skills that remain unexplained. Her sword skill is explained, but where did all that hand to hand skill come from? She wasn't watching the best hand to hand fighters practice and emulating them. She also never had anyone to practice with. Also she seems to have some skill picking locks. That also remains unexplained unless the swordsmith was making locks on the side which is rather unlikely.

She is a man and thus must act as one. Especially at that gate scene. Would another man help? Most likely not. But once there was no crowd, she helped. Something like this happens again in later episodes, though some characters around her disagree on the decision. Man, I hope you do more insights about this show. It's amazing!

But yet she thought about how she could help and found them some money to make up for not being able to sell at the market. it was one her mind the whole time. I'm speaking as someone who grew up a bit too much like Mizu did (not nearly as severe, but almost). I am so much like Mizu for the same reasons Mizu is the way she is (including events and moments in my life that paralleled the events in episode 5). And people don't get it.

The gene for blue eyes is *recessive.* This means that a blue-eyed person MUST have received two copies of the blue-eyed gene, one from each parent. So, Mizu cannot be the child of a fully Japanese mother, and a European father: She is in error in believing that her eyes come from her father. They come from both. Because the gene for blue eyes is recessive, we know that Mizu must be the child of two mixed-race, Japanese-European parents. It is further possible, even likely, that both *carried* this recessive gene, but had dark eyes. If Mizu's parents were able to "pass" as fully Japanese, they might have sent away their child to be raised by a paid nurse, in order to preserve the illusion that they were full-blood Japanese. Regardless, Mizu's vengeance against her four possible fathers is not enough! She also needs to find her European-Japanese mother!

I love the point about how, to some extent, being teased is healthy. Obviously victimizing someone is wrong but I know from at least my own experience growing up me and all my friends would tease each other all the time. We also cared about each other so when at any point we maybe went to far and hurt each others feelings, we were lucky enough to have a very good friend group where we all felt comfortable with expressing that to each other. And branching off from that, we also all felt very comfortable being able to apologize to each other if ever we accidentally hurt each others feelings, and I think that is one of the biggest things that allowed us all to be and remain such close friends. But at the same time I'm very happy that I got to grow up with a bunch of people who were not afraid to tease me, but at the same time never wanted to hurt me, because it allowed me to learn how to take criticism and at the same time advocate for myself if ever at any time something made me feel excluded or hurt. Bullying is obviously wrong, but I find the idea of teasing (so long as all parties involved understand that its just teasing and is not meant to harm) to be a very healthy thing because it offers a very low stakes opportunity for us to learn how to take criticism with grace and acceptance.

Great analysis as always. I would add one thing as a person that lived in Japan for 22 years, speaks the language, and even taught Japanese Society & Culture classes at uni there. Another reason that Mizu doesn't help Ringo or the girls could be that they are Japanese, and she has been outside of Japanese identity so long and treated so inhumanly that she doesn't see them as human. In Japanese, we call it 内外 (uchi-soto, or insider / outsider), and is a foundational belief in traditional Japanese culture. Especially during the 鎖国 (sakoku or Closed Country) period.

When it comes to drawing the line between developing resilience and crossing that line into plain bullying, what do you look for to identify that line has been crossed?

Georgia how can you forget her hat and sword?! I did watch all of the show. Mizu is pretty cool character. I can kinda to relate to her. I too was treated as a an outcast especially during my younger years. People say I look mean/hard to approach/walk like the Terminator. But that's just the end result of the nonsense I've dealt with. Sadlt(I guess), anyone who fits into that group I was rejected from, I no longer care what happens to them.

7:30 I actually thought that she was playing a double role i meant ,having more than one purpose for an action , i think she defend Ringo and cut the finger of that man ,because he improperly touched the girls or even to create a horror and fear in that man's mind to get to her next step , because if she was so self centred and focused she wouldn't give that gold hair pin she took from taigen after the fight, to a woman with her child she saw before she entered the town of shinto ,who were not sent to town because women aren't allowed to travel alone and mizu saw it and gave them gold so that they could survive in the brutal winters on that ,on her way back from the town. I personally think mizu is a kind of person who helps anyone who comes across or along her way but not the ones against her way so that she wouldn't get off her track .

Cosplay cardboard aside, what is the point of the loop in the middle of the glasses? Does it allow them to turn upside down and hook into the nostrils? Because if the loop settled on the nose like a pince-nez, the lenses would be far too low for the eyes.

somewhat understand the bullying because of the culture she grew up in, as stated kids are cruel. I understand her need to keep things close to her chest because she was bullied because of a physical trait, I understand her desire for strength because it allows her to never be helpless again. But I never understood the absolute hate she has for her father, or the need for revenge against him. and that is a pretty important part of the story...even at the end of this run, she is still going after her potential father. Her "father" was never in her life, nor did she wish he was, she blames him for her being born. She doesn't want any real revenge against her bullies, against the men that from her perspective left her mother to burn to death. No, she wants revenge against 4 men she has never met...because 1 of them is potentially her father. now it helps that the 4 men are hinted at being sh*tbags so one doesn't really care if they end up dying..but still..Mizu's world has a lot more of those much closer to home that actually have impact on her life, all of them being logical targets for revenge. instead she goes after someone...for being born.
